Re: Engine Oils
Hi VimalOriginally posted by vimal k View Posthi guys , i am new here from punjab.i have a 2007 hero honda hunk. i only uses my bike for city riding only. recently i started riding my bike for long trips of 400km in one day.i ride mostly at the speed of 80 to 90 kmph not-stop for 4 hours on NH1. my bike completed only 17000 km. i need some help in these questions.
1- I need some SAE 10W-30 OIL recommendations from you guys for long trips . should i use hero honda 4t oil or choose some other brand? can i use honda unicorn or dazzler engine oil for hunk?
2- how much oil do i need for oil change? my hunk manual says engine oil capacity 1.2 litre,0.90 litre at draining. what that supposed to mean. do i need 1.2 litre or 0.90 litre for oil change.
3- can i purchase hero honda 4t oil from service centre without changing it by their mechanics . i want to change engine oil myself because service centre guys waste my time.
hope u guys help me.
hope you are doing well.
1. The Best 10W30 oil is Motul.
2. Some amount of oil vaporises at high speeds, hence the amount of oil required might differ. Why dont you fill 0.9 litres and chk with a dipstick. Then if it is below mark then add till you reach the proper mark. BEware, dont overfill, it may cause gasket failure.
3. you can buy oil from SVC and change it urself.
PS - Just a suggestion - If you drive at sustained speeds of 80 KMPH for 4 hrs, then a thicker oil would provide better protection. Try 10W40 or 20W40 oil.

Re: Engine Oils
Loss of mileage and pick-up will occur in using 10w40 in a engine designed for 10w30 !Originally posted by sancreation View PostI would recommend giving a try to shell ax7 10w40..good semi synthetic oil can be used for 2500km costs around 380 for 1liter

Have a look at the mds sheets of 10w30 and 10w40 of any manufacturer !

Re: Engine Oils
For Indian ambient temperature 10w40 oil suits the best...i agree on the mileage drop(around 1-2 kilometres )...but 10w30 can not protect the engine better than 10w40 oil...even i used to use 10w30sj oil prescribed by the company but the oil life is less and doesn't hold on continues highway ride at high speeds.
I am not forcing any one to use oil which i think is good...I'm just saying it on my experience with the 10w40 oil .

Re: Engine Oils
Agreed, but mileage drop is in the range of 15-18 % ( i.e. 47kmpl instead of 60kmpl ) . This is tried and tested on 3 of my bikes ( tank-full to tank-full ).Originally posted by sancreation View PostFor Indian ambient temperature 10w40 oil suits the best...i agree on the mileage drop(around 1-2 kilometres )...but 10w30 can not protect the engine better than 10w40 oil...even i used to use 10w30sj oil prescribed by the company but the oil life is less and doesn't hold on continues highway ride at high speeds.

Re: Engine Oils
15-18
wen u measure tank to tank u will never get the same mileage as we tend to rip our rides with full tank and ride like grandpa's wen it comes to reserve
i tried from reserve to reserve method.so 1-2kilometers difference if u calculate for full tank for example 10liters 2x10 =20kilometers drop...10w40 feels a bit sluggish than 10w30 but once engine is warmed up...feels good.

Re: Engine Oils
There is a pdf I attached on the above thread. Please go through it. There is only 1.5% increment when we use thinner oils. Same would be the loss on using thick oils.

Re: Engine Oils
muztariq I have picked up two bottles of Rimula R4. Any flushing needed? Or I can just drain the older castrol and pour R4?

Re: Engine Oils
Same in my experience, Shell Advance ultra 10w40 instead of honda 10w30, mileage drop from 58 to 49. Reserve to reserve method- Honda cb trigger. Next 3000 kms using TVS full synthetic 10w30 with a mileage of average 56, now testing TVS10w30 semi synthetic.Originally posted by GOLDWING View PostAgreed, but mileage drop is in the range of 15-18 % ( i.e. 47kmpl instead of 60kmpl ) . Re: Engine Oils
No need to use flush, unless your engine is sludged up.Last edited by B7ACKTHORN; 04-29-2015, 11:28 PM.

Re: Engine Oils
Thanks man, I don't think its sludged up.Originally posted by muztariq View PostNo need to use flush, unless your engine is sludged up.
I'm now running R4, will update with my observations over the next 1-3K kms.
What do you recommend as the drain interval ? I've usually replaced minerals in 1K-1.5K and SS in 3-4K and FS in 4-5K usually.

Re: Engine Oils
All the best with the oil. The drain interval should be the max drain interval your vehicle manufacturer prescribes. It is usually 3K kms.Originally posted by Praful View PostThanks man, I don't think its sludged up.

Re: Engine Oils
Due to unavoidable circumstances i have to do with 20w40 oil on my 220,i am making sure that i dont ride it too hard or too long to ensure that engine parts are not damaged.
But i am noticing a peculiar problem. The engine braking has considerably dropped with this oil(motul 3000),can engine oil affect the engine braking?
