Interesting, though the LS2 models seem to be available between 2-3.5k for all models, not sure the market is flooded with fakes, my assumption is that these are older models (no longer listed by LS2), which are being used by LS2 and Vega to get a grip on markets such as India, Philippines etc. where people won't pay premium prices for helmets, Vega also manufacture some LS2 models in India. Even the ones made by LS2 in China will leave the factory for less that Rs1000 per unit, it's perfectly feasible if the production runs are high volume. Within the 2-3.5k range, these are being mostly sold by Vega authorised dealers, doesn't mean the dealer is rolling straight dice, guess it's still an open verdict. If in doubt contact Vega, they will verify if a product is genuine or not, if not they will most likely wish to know who is selling the fake products, so they can take action. Trouble is people don't really care if it's fake or original, as long as it appears a good deal, taking important things such as a helmet at face value for a good deal, can be in the event of a serious accident a very false economy, in the end you pay your money, you make your choice.Originally posted by Sunnyside_up! View PostReading the posts above where the same helmet ranges from 2K to 5.5K in different places, doesn't it make anyone wonder why there is such a difference?
We are all so busy trying to get a bargain that nobody looks at the background.
While differing retail prices are common in such an unregulated market, the difference at best should not be more than a few hundred bucks.
Here's some facts to ponder - import duties, CIF, etc., is about 40% of invoice value. Distribution channels traditionally demand at least 40% (distributor - dealer - reseller). We can safely assume that the manufacturer in China has to have at least 20% margin for his trouble. Given that 100% of an "imported" items cost will be under these heads, does it seem plausible that a quality helmet could actually cost only about 1000 bucks? (Assuming a 2K retail price)
Given the above facts, it seems highly likely that the 'el cheapo' units are fake, don't you think?
In our constant endeavour to get something cheap - we constantly throw common sense to the winds - we may as well be wearing plastic buckets on our heads rather than these cosmetically similar fakes.
My advice to the guy who got a high quote - contact the authorised distributor - Vega - for the right price and authorised retail point.
My advice to the guy who picked up the cheapest version - take a good hard look at what you're wearing and trusting to protect your noggin...... who knows, maybe the shop-keeper took a liking to you and actually sold you a genuine article for less than cost!
Beware of Bread, don't say I didn't warn you!
More than 98 percent of convicted criminals are bread eaters !
Statistics show that more than 75 % of violent crimes are committed within 24 hours of eating bread !
Bread is known to be extremely addictive. Subjects deprived of bread and given only water, actually begged for bread after just two days !
Bread has been proven to kill. Scientists have now uncovered alarming evidence that 100% of the people who eat bread will eventually die !

When it comes to helmets, Hyderabad has always been very expensive when compared to cities like Bangalore & Bombay. And by expensive I mean a grand or more than other cities. The only reason I can think of is that it must be a highly controlled market with a high degree of collaboration between the sellers who maintain artificially high prices. Sarvajit can back me up on this.
I have always found the cheapest helmet prices in Cochin at AutoQueen which is always a few hundred bucks cheaper than all other cities. And he doesnt even have competition !

My suggestion to anyone planing to buy or using the Vega motocross helmet. Please do not. In a recent accident in Bangalore there was a student who died and was wearing the same helmet. The pics posted in the newspaper was simply shocking to see the state of the helmet after the crash. The helmet has caught a craze with the students and every other Tom,Dick and Harry has this helmet.

I have ICON Alliance as my main everyday use helmet . Earlier i used Sparx S-07 and AGV K3(I still have them)Originally posted by joelkraju View PostAnyone over here using ICON helmet? If so hows it?Worth it?
Icon has a better helmet liner easy to remove and clean .
Face shield K3 is better . Fog free coating on Icon shield works well .
Air flow is good could have been better (IMO).
Icon Size is smaller than K3(liner is thin here otherwise almost same) and S-07( I have size L S-07 and Icon is size M)
Overall its a good package for the money . I picked up mine for $140(on sale)
Its worth more than the money I paid for it . I also picked up Mirror finish visor , the coating did not last long, now removed the coating completely and made it clear visor :-)For Sale

Just a minor addition to what you have pointed out - while you are correct that a helmet can be produced for under Rs.1000 (after all many Indian helmets are sold under that price point) - I am referring to helmets that comply with International standards such as DOT/ECE. Which is the primary reason that we want to buy 'imported' helmets in the first place!
The major cost of manufacture of helmets lie in the shell - and the appropriate thickness required to pass the DOT and ECE tests determine these costs. SNELL tests are more rigorous and hence are normally thicker, which is why SNELL helmets are normally much heavier. Incidentally, Vega does (or did) make a range of high quality helmets with ECE certification costing about 3.5K and also weighing a lot more than their standard Indian fare. I don't see them around now though.
Helmets made in India for the Indian market do not have to have the same standards since DOT certifications are mandated by law in North America - not India. By putting a DOT certification on the helmet - in most cases just a sticker (which is also not allowed by law in the US) - many unscrupulous dealers sell sub-standard products to gullible buyers. I have recently noticed many Indian made helmets sporting the DOT label - none of whom actually sell helmets in North America!
Unscrupulous companies and dealers are obviously just riding the "DOT/ECE" wave.
Another thought - if we were to buy a non international standard helmet manufactured in India by an Indian manufacturer - why should we pay more than the Indian price for a helmet of about 1.5K max? For the 'brand'? The graphics?
While I can't comment on the incident or even if the poor quality helmet contributed to the loss of life, I agree with your assessment of the model in question - I have recently closely examined one such helmet, and it was IMHO - in a word - CRAP!Originally posted by asif View PostMy suggestion to anyone planing to buy or using the Vega motocross helmet. The shell thickness is laughable - it flexes and deforms badly with just pressure from my fingers - imagine what it will do when your noggin hits the road! The EPS liner is very thin. It has no neck-roll worth mentioning and the padding is mediocre at best. I also noticed that in many such helmets, the thin rubber gasket on the edges was torn, indicative that the density of rubber used was inadequate. Still, it sells well simply because it looks trendy.

Anyway, i have recently bought an LS2 FF358 Supra. It's good, the inflatable cheek pads seem to be working. The reduction in wind noise is commendable. All in all, I am satisfied. It costed me 5000rupees. For those interested you can find the helmet here,
