That's correct, I'm afraid. Someone I know bought a helmet for about 9K and ended up with 45% duty on the helmet. He had to cough up as the item was held up by Customs for 5 days.

This happened just a week ago.

What logic do the customs officials apply while charging duties? 45% seems to be exorbitant. I always though the duty was around 25% and exempt for orders less than 15k or so. I may be misinformed though.

alpinestar el-nino one piece rainsuit

got myself an alpinestar el-nino one piece rain suit.
seems pretty good as didnt get wet at all in today's heavy rain in mumbai (half hour commute through it). has inner mesh that doesnt make you sweat like rubber raincoats. has heat resistant patch on feet to tackle engine heat.

I got one size large hence the wrist and ankle velcro doesnt close completely. doesnt have a hood but if wearing helmet, this is not problem.

not recommended if you hate one piece suits

lets see how many rains it lasts through. as of now, seems great

and yes: do not buy cramster if you plan to ride through rains. I got one and it has "waterproof" tag stitched on it. customer support says that it is drizzle proof but it works like a sponge, ride in drizzle for few mins and it will soak water. after few mails, they agreed that the waterproof tag was put on that batch "by mistake"
otherwise they are great value for money, personally helped through high speed slide

@ Shivank / Sunny - Thanks for the headsup. My order for an A* SMX2 boot has been pending with them for a while and they were supposed to ship it by the 22nd of this month. The 45% duty gave me a major fright!

Has anyone ordered riding gears from Riders discount in recent times? Their sales representative says that orders are no more sent as 'gifts'! Does that mean if I buy something from them then I have to pay custom duties as well? Anyone got any idea..

45% is too steep. For customs, I've never paid over 20% of the MRP on the riding gear. Maybe this is a one off case (of 45%...not sure about RD no longer sending gifts though)

Have sourced most of my gear through this route and for none of them I had to shell more than 20~25% on the MRP. Am not sure if there are any other similar cases but 45% is quite unbelievable...me thinks it is a one off case.

On Ridersdiscount, am not sure if anybody would like to do business with them anymore. Because they almost always do not have closeouts and on top of that, going by the recent posts, the $25 standard international shipping seems to be misleading.

Duty free gifts, AFAIK is only valid when you are sending orders of value <10k INR.

Yes,I was trying to contact you through PM at another forum on this issue.Anyway,the sales representative (some lad called John) said that the changes have been done quiet recently like,not even a month.He said,it's 'illegal' to send orders like that. A bit disappointing as I have been surfing on the net for quite some time now,looking for the best possible deal.

In that case, and like I wrote before, it doesn't make any sense to buy from them unless they offer closeouts. Better try other sites which have closeouts and you can end up buying at a not so hefty price.

Help!

Ok guys, i've finally made up my mind and saved up enough:P to go for the Rjays Octane.
Now the only thing im worried about is the size!

I've gone through the rjays sizing guide. I wanted to know whether the measurements are body measurements or jacket measurements!

Discussed the above with Zulfi and he said I should compare these measurements to how I want the jacket. However, I contacted Mr. Brian Price from Rjays, Australia and he said I should compare these measurements to my body

I really dont want to order the wrong size and send it all the way back to Bombay for an exchange.
Any Octane(or any rjays jacket) owners out there who can help me?
