  • ^ Nice, you had an earlier rig so you could re-use some components.
I have basically nothing except an old laptop. So, I'm looking at 70K + expenditures at a minimum.

I think I'll wait till the prices come down a little bit.

For my rig, it might be a lot more costlier than 70K if u buy everything here!

      Graphics card - 10K min
      HDD - 5K minimum
      Monitor - 10K minimum
RAM - The same RAM costs over 15K+ here.

      • Yes the RAM is expensive here but I'll get that from the US.
The GPU part is something to cheer about though, as ATI has introduced price cuts. The 4870 is around 11K now while the 4850 has gone to 7-8K.
Once the HD 5XXX series launches, the prices will fall further...

anyway I have decided to wait some 2-3 months minimum. I'll save some dough as well.

Graphics card and HDDs from my earlier rig. The cabinet was got from here: Lynx Chandigarh Largest Electronic & Computer Superstore

Ganesh: Check for Xigmatek THOR review on xbitlabs.com(Thor's Hammer: XIGMATEK's Weapon for the God of Thunder and Lightning - X-bit labs) and u will know! RAM, I have mentioned - its a 6 GB 1600 MHz G-Skill RAM. SMPS is a CORSAIR TX750W. Not yet benched the system. But Vista x64 shows a rating of 5.9 for everything and 5.3 for the HDD! Nope nothing is a SDD. 164 GB is HITACHI SATA - 2, 80 GB is a Western Digital IDE!

@tanay: If u can get the ATi 5xxx, nothing like it! In 2- 3 months, Intel also plans to introduce the i3, i5 and i9 series. So there will be lot more options to choose from! The i7 being targeted at enthusiasts is not likely to drop prices.

            • yes I was reading about the new i3 and i5 from Intel.

The i3 series will be rebadged C2D's and C2Q's. Or maybe just C2Qs.
              i5 is a crippled i7.
I will scrape together the necessary $$s but I will get the i7 . Its great going by the owners' experiences and the benchmarks on sites.

I went to SP Road once...the dealer says."U want a gaming system? Keep a budget of 1 lakh." And then he showed me receipts of 3 rich guys who had already bought i7 systems at 1+ lakhs.

I need to get rich fast.

              • @Aparajith: the sink design is quite unique.... first time seeing a heatsink with irregular fins in them... makes my CM Gemin II look puny... .. how is it functioning though?? and did a fan come along with it...???

the G-Skill is an amazing performer..!!! it can just survive all the beatings of any level of overclocking... nothing comes close to it...!!

i7 HANDS DOWN 5.9..!!!! its a winner!!! no questions there... if fact i would be in doubt if only it doesnot return a 5.9..

eagerly waiting for the 3D mark 05.... lets see wat numbers its capable of crunching...

in my opinion, the grafix system needs to be upgraded.... its a mere insult for the i7 to be working with an HD4800 series...

and looking at the configuration., there is a lot of room for squeezing the MAX..!!

                • ^^Yep, ur very true. The reason I got a TX750 is because I want to X-Fire it soon. Lets see, probably 2 months down the line.

The cooler is just amazing. Was playing FEAR 2 for 3 - 4 hours on a non-A/C room and the damn thing was running at 39-degrees C!! The system temperature was some 51 IIRC. No fans came with it. I already had 2 120-mm CoolerMaster fans. I used them. Also I used a AS5 and that does help things.

In my earlier system, AS5 alone reduced CPU temperature by around 5-degrees C on a stock HSF on an OC'ed AMD Athlon X2 4200+.

I will update the 3DMark/SiSoft scores soon

and BTW... i've managed reached the 3601mhz mark on my 8400.... will post screenshots asap...

                    • Idle temp is just unbelievable.... 29-degrees C. BEAT THAT!!!!
Yet to overclock, never felt the need for it. Dont want to load it up immediately. Lets take it step by step!!

and yeah, here is my benchmarks...
could crack the 3300 CPU mark....

PS: tried GTA IV??? is it makin your proccy sweat at full rendering?? btw, is full rendering possible?? given the fact that there is only a puny HD4850...

                          • Ur grossly mistaken Ganesh. The 4850 is highly capable. Reason being I only have a 17-inch monitor and so my max resolution if 1280*1024. All games run with max resolution on it!! IMHO the ATi's are far ahead and better than their bloated, stupidly overpriced nVidia counterparts!!

but does it run GTAIV????(full rendering) that was my doubt.... as for every point that is a capable card, unfortunately GTAIV requires more.... it calculates the graphics based on the amount graphics memory required and it has only 512MB.... the reason i referred to it as puny was because GTAIV wont crank up my graphics more than a particular point, it simply wont(is this a problem only on my PC or is it experienced by all?)... added to it i have only a 15"...
there is something like resource usage... if i exceed the redline, it comes back to the yellow zone....
