go for the corsair VX450W... much better PSU than the CM and is in the same price range.... best VFM!

    • ^ That PSU is very nice. However, if you plan on adding a second gfx card then consider the Corsair 650 TX as the VX450 will not be sufficient.

But for a single-card setup the 450 is ample.

Oh, and avoid the CM Extreme Power series PSU's. Heard piles of bad things about them.

        • @tanay: thanks for that info and one more doubt... say a HD4850 gives a 100% performance... so two HD4850's in crossfire would give a 200% performance? or would it be restricted??

AFAIK, a single card works on PCI x16, but when used in crossfire its restricted to 8+8 (correct me if wrong)

          • ^ The benefits of xFire are specific to the games. Some games scale very well in xFire while some show barely any difference. But very rarely, I think, or possibly never, does xFire show 100% improvement over a single card. (make that an average of 60-70% improvement in current games)
Older games will not scale as well. But the newer games coming out should be optimised for multi-gpu solutions.

The PCI-e x16 speed is motherboard dependent. Most motherboards that have 2 PCIe slots have one running at x16 and one at x8. Putting 2 cards causes both to drop down to x8 speeds. Only in the newest motherboards which contain the 790FX chipset from AMD or the Intel X58 chipset have 2 true PCIe at x16 speeds.

However, the good news is that there is a negligible performance difference between x8/x8 and x16/x16 unless you play at 1920x1080 and above. Ya you are correct in the x8/x8 thing but it does not make all that much of an impact. So I'd say go in for it if you want!

All this makes me wish I had the $$s for a good rig myself...

            • @aparajith: i think u are a PALIT user right?
some info for you and others also.

PALIT and GAINWARD are the biggest customers of ATI and NVIDIA.gainward sold its business unit and shut shop.

the major difference between PALIT and likes of sapphire MSI are that PALIT are not reference boards.everything is actually majorly from scratch.(ofcourse not the 770 chip.).their PCBs are different.chips are of samsung.which are highly appreciated when it comes to overclocking in GPU segment.

take for example my graphics card.

their own design makes the card shorter than the reference board.so its advantageous from point of space.the cooling solution keeps temps low even on load.and still they perform silent.note that there are "2" 6pin power connectors.and if you thinking that i by mistake wrote GDDR5 then well its actually GDDR5.

all the components in this PALIT is only for one thing.pure performance at any level.

sapphire cards cooling solution some say dont perform good.

if cooling is your top priority then nothing can beat the HIS ICE series.

i am really happy with my graphics card.

              anvancy.

it would be another HD4850 and a tagan TG600 and yeah, can i go for the 1GB HD4850 DDR3 and put it in crossfireX along with my existing one(512MB HD4850 DDR3)??

having confusions for the motherboard... have an MSI p45 Neo-F... was the best in class for overclocking and VFM! only problem, just one PCIe x16
being a fan of MSI, i wanted to go for the MSI P45 Neo2, but i believe its no longer available... so any options for motherboards?

i was thinkin about GA-EP45-DS3.. but its a rare board to find!

try for ASUS P5Q series or Gigabyte EP-45 UD series.both have x8/x8 slots.

if you want x16/x16 try for intel X48 chipset boards.

That is very true, but PALIT's have a particularly higher rate than the others!!

                          • If affordable, and available, go for Asus cards...they make them for extreme performance and overclocking exclusively. And, they have a great software bundle with each mid-end to high-end card.

till our respective cards are working..its good.

when they DIE..change.cause specially in comp tech u just cant blame one company.

all companies suffer one prob or the other.

its like HH has very high price of panels and stuff, while bajaj is now improving on its performance thing.so from time to time all these companies get a lot of bashing from we consumers.

but we are the main sufferers.

forget it and lets enjoy our cards.

                              • I wouldnt suggest going for an Asus HD4850. One of the things that I did before buying my Sapphire HD4850 was to read up on the customer reviews. Didnt want to shell out 10k on a card that would later bother me. I had the following options:
                                1. Sapphire HD4850 512MB
                                2. Sapphire HD4850 1GB
                                3. Sapphire Toxic 4850
                                4. Sapphire Vapor X 4850
                                5. MSI 4850 OC
                                6. Powercolor 4850 PCS+
                                7. Asus 4850

Spent two months reading reviews and here's what I came up with.
                                1. Sapphire HD4850 is excellent in build but tends to overheat.(Problem rectified in the dual slot variant)
                                2. Same as above except that the extra 512MB isnt quite performance boosting at any resolution.
                                3. Pricier than the normal card and has a Zalman. No issues except it's rare to find in India.
                                4. Same as above. But this one uses a different kind of cooling.
                                5. MSI was a tempting option. But then I came across many feedbacks where people said that the fan speed is locked at 100% so it does get noisy. So out it went from my list. Except that,it's a good buy.
                                6. Powercolor is Tul in disguise. They came quite early in the Indian market and for some reason mysteriously disappeared. However they are back now. The PCS+ version is essentially an overclocked 4850 with a copper cooler made by Zerotherm. This was quite promising and my heart was set on it. However it wasnt available here and the most decent quote I got was about 11k. Didnt want to spend that much.
                                7. Asus 4850 had some issues where the card would randomly lock up even at normal temperatures and cause BSODs. Read the customer reviews at Newegg. Removed from list.

Eventually bought a dual slot Sapphire 4850 1GB. This is because I have plans to upgrade to a bigger LCD preferably a 22inch.And there's always hope that some games may make use of the extra memory.
Hope this info helps the future 4850 buyers.
