@ all - thanks for your inputs. Still have a couple of doubts though.

Hey Naughty Vaish , could you elaborate on the external hard disk part ?

From what I have understood so far, I have to get my dvd drive replaced cause there is no other way for me to install the new OS. If there is and my technically challenged brain hasnt understood it, could someone please explain ?

1 (silly) doubt - if i were to format my hard disk, how do i reinstall windows as my dvd drive is out of commission ?
Well u can do this. When the blank screen comes with the cursor, hit CTRL+ALT+DEL. Windows task manager would open up. In the applications tab click on new task. Then type explorer.exe and click ok. Your desktop should appear now. If it doesnt work formatting would be the only option.

But the HDD still shows "BAD" status every time the computer boots.
For this u can use your HD manufacturer's disk manager utility and format the drive. This is what most of the local technicians do to get rid of bad sectors.

Need some help. I ran a AVG scan on my laptop on sunday and after finding that there were no viruses, I cleared out the virus vault to remove any old infections which were captured. I restarted my system and to my surprise I found that windows wasnt loading properly. It is showing the windows start up and then shows a black screen (my wallpaper) with the cursor icon but without any sign of anything else loading from windows. I have tried starting Windows in safe mode etc but each time it shows a black screen with my cursor and nothing else. I keep restarting my laptop hoping some miracle will happen.

Can someone tell me what I can do to get my lappie back into working condition ?

P.S - my dvd drive does not work so i cant load windows off a dvd at startup.

P.s - It runs on Windows XP

Edit : Its an HP laptop, model number DV 5120.
your explorer.exe file is not loading..
if you want a temporary solution then go for below

"when the screen with only cursor comes then press ctrl+alt+del, then click on File>start task> then type explorer.exe"..

this is only a temporary solution that i have tried and still i log on to my windows xp using that only

u cant do that, bad sectors means damage to hard disk..ie permanent damange, no software in this world has the capability to treat physically damaged device
sso creating a backup before the HD starts to behave nasty is the only way u can protect data from loosing

Yes, Bad Sectors cannot be repaired. But they can be effectively marked unusable by using a disc checkup utility or a disk manager utility. The best would be to use a low level formatting from the HD manufacturer's disk manager utility which will mark the bad sectors unusable and remap them to new spare sectors. When run out of spare sectors hard-disk size would start to decrease. A bad sector doesnt cause further damage to other sectors of the drive. However a faulty drive head will lead to further bad sectors.

                    • This is why its always good to run some kinda HDD monitoring utility, i use HDD sentinel it will warn you when the drive is about to fail.Even recently this o&o HDD led 3 product which will warn you if the HDD is about to fail,it was given free of charge for a short while i did not post it here as mods say its spam and it get deleted automatically.

As far as antivirus is concerned please dont go for avg and the like, avira is good even the free version kicks a@#(the premium version is being offered 90 day trial google it).People looking for good antivirus can google for "Bitdefender Internet security 2010" a romanian site is giving 90 days free trial.their is even a 90 day offer for ESET smart security.

If you are looking for a free Internet security product that has antivirus, firewall etc look no further than COMODO internet security(i use just the firewall portion of this awesome product) which is free and puts some of the paid products to shame.Link

Using some kinda on demand scanner like malwarebytes is a good idea too.

People who are infected and are not able to get into the OS can use GDATA BOOTCD has a very high detection rate as it uses 2 scanning engine(lot of false positive too) or Avira boot CD which is easy to use if you ask me.

its the same bro as you put a OS cd into CD drive n start formatting your pc just insert a externel hard disk which has got OS software and go to boot menu while starting up by pressing F12 or F8 ...this key will be showing below while the pc is starting n just see which key you need to enetr into boot screen [ boot menu ] then change the load os from your pc to externeal hard disk and then you can start formatting it this is lil diff but better dun do if you cant ..try replacing your CD drive soon
                        take care

                        • @neil.jericho: if you can manage to get an ISO image of Windows 7, mount it using daemon tools/ and the like, start the setup from there. dont have to worry about being asked to insert the DVD in the middle of the setup.

thats how i installed it, mounted using MagicDisc and started the setup. works fine for me.

I just went back to the 1990's, my HDD died out on me completely yesterday, the annoyance of having a Seagate, luckily i had everything backed up predicting this. Yes, its the 7200.12 that people warned me to stay away from. It was hardly a month old, till then i'm stuck with my Father's ancient terminal for nearly two weeks or more till i get a replacement HDD.
