  • Apache RTR 180 vs Yamaha FZ 16... first bike

    Hi guys...

First off id like to congo u all for the gr8 job...

Nd im new to both the community and biking(a complete n00b).. so I appreciate all the advice i can get...

    Abt ME..

I'm 5'11ft and weigh around 80(stop starin... im workin on it :|)..
    I've a kinda hefty built... and m 19yrs old..

    Coming to the problem...

I need a bike.. which ill use mostly(95%) in city traffic... (Hyd)

What I need from the bike...
    • Looks matter...'coz im a collz kid
    • Enough power to rev past traffic..
    • Rider friendly...'coz it'll be my first bike..
    • Mileage doesn't hurt..
    • Easy maintenance.. and easily available spares.. I dont want to run chennai for every goddamn thing
    • last but not least.. it shud impress my girl friend.. :P

    My List...

Absolutely NO pulsars or karizmas.. there are already plenty in my collz..
btw.. i dont like the new ZMR either...

    What I finally shortlisted are..
Yamaha FZ 16 and Apache RTR 180...

    Problem with APACHE
I'm more inclined towards Apache but my dad has rooted hatred towards TVS.. thanks to his victor.. which was a piece of junk..

I've also heard that apache's engine wears out within a year... is that true?

My friends keep saying that TVS service is crap and apache spares are not available.. ...

    Problem with FZ

Coming to FZ... It feels okay.. but i was definitely not satisfied with its power... atleast I cud easily spot the difference after testing RTR 180...
When i tried to overtake a bus... FZ disappointed me.. as it just dragged me like an age old CD100 SS...

And I've als seen that it doesn't offer good mileage... no power + no FE.. is crap...

So.. whats your take on it?

I'm totally new to biking so... advice related to bike maintance and safety is also welcome

      Here's some quick suggestion for u :-

I've owned FZ for 16k over a period of 17months - EXCELLENT bike in all aspects what u are actually looking for. U will hardly spend on this one - only when u are bound for servicing it. Mileage is 40 for record & is very easy to maintain.

Apache is a dagger - one twist on throttle & traffic is lost in your RVMs. Though maintanence is a bit problem - biggest drawback is holy Vibrations that comes out from nowhere once u are done some 60+.

News is that TVS is launching new 160 Hyper-edge version of 160 which should bring down drawbacks of 160/180 though 180 is still better compared to 160.

Choice is yours - take a ride on both bikes & throw the dice. Further if u are confused - suggest u to read "Ownership Thread" of both bikes from very 1st post & u will be settled with one of u desire.

if power is what you need take rtr....
but if you want to go for looks, no vibrations till100+, can take on the bike from start to 100+ even in the 4th gear go for fz....

plus i think that for your height rtr might look a little too small.

Thanks for the heads up Aryan!!

@thunderbird_m6: Yeah I test drove both of them. And FZ was ok but Apache was fun.
What do u recommend for a longer duration.. I mean For atleast 5 years the bike should do its duty..

What about the engine wear problem? And I'll def go through ownwership threads thanks for the tip.

            no probs

Ther isn't any type of engine wear problems in any of the bike. These are just myths.Different people have different opinions.

Mostly you have heard that pulsar's engine worn's out in 1 year or so.But if maintained properly, nothing ever goes in vain.So don't think nd remove this crappy point from ur mind that this company has that issue or what.

Regarding bike i personally suggest you rtr b'coz FZ does'nt have any power just looks. And Apache rtr got it all. It's a all rounder.Regarding vibration's there isn't much problem.U will handle it and as you have said that you are starter. Then Apache is Feel Good factor for you.

Go for it ad u will never regret your decision + You are getting a rear disc too that's considered luxury here in India + add more feathers to looks of bike.

Go for rtr dear and regarding spares Apache is flagship model of TVS, so TVS got it all for their customers

I have been using the Fiero with all kinda abuse and engine mods for almost a decade now, it still gives me a smile when ever I wanna rip. You wont go wrong with either of the bikes, if you are seeking fun than RTR else go for the FZ[city commuter].

First and foremost, these are two completely different bikes to make a decision upon.

I have a feeling the CB-Dazzler would be the ideal choice for you. Last Sunday, i had a ride on it and i absolutely loved it. The grunt upwards of 6k rpm is marvelous and it kept me hooked and so did the handling. Do have a test ride of it, it's a more fun to ride bike than the FZ and will also return much better fuel efficiency.

And whatever you heard about TVS is pure BS!!

rtr is a 180 cc ,so plz dont compare it to the fz just bcoz of the same price point,
rtr shd be compared with pulsar 180 power,
whatever u buy nothing ever comes close to the quality ,finish of yamaha bikes
PS- my fz runs on r15 sprockets ,and can overtake a rtr180 with ease ,only problem it is good upto 90kmph

If possible wait for the new RTR upgrade thats gonna happen in 1-2 months .

if not go for the RTR 180 . my RTR 160 is 2+ years old and still goes to 125 on speedo easily . the person who says TVS engines wear out is clearly misinformed. spares are also easy to find and are cheap as rtr series have a lot of common parts . Has more power than Fz and that shoul keep you happy for long time . plus RTR rear seat more comfy for your gf

Hmmm... I know hat these are totally different bikes. But they are the only ones I like right now.

And coming to CB Dazzler, I personally don't like its look. I admire Honda's engineering though.. My dad's Unicorn still revs like a charm.

And guys do you think I can maintain RTR 180 well?.. 'coz I'm totally new to biking, and don't know how to maintain a machine properly..

                          rtr rocks

hey dude forget what people about tvs my cousin resently bought the rtr 180 and it is a total screemer. It has no revlimiter so you can easly overtake. As for the vibration, i rode the bike at 112 kmph and i didnot experience any vib.i you like to push your limits go for the rtr.
The fz is more reliable. But once you go past 70 it feels to weak.
I would personaly get an rtr. In fact i might get one next mounth. But if wont be testing the bike for perfomance go for the fz due to better build etc.But dont push the bike in the run in period.
As for maintaince all you can do is clean your bike very well and lub the chain every mounth or 2 weeks which ever you feel better.
                          BEST OF LUCK.
                          Must ride on!

I don't agree that TVS engine worns out in 2 years. If properly maintained, it can be in good condition as long as you want. The vibration is there in any bike, yes the TVS does create some vibration but its not like the ones that would throw you off or cause imbalance, there are accusations in the forum that the tyre is the culprit here.

For a City bike, both does the job

                            FZ16

                            - has a more comfortable posture.
                            - Brand name.
                            - Modification options will be more I believe.
                            - Its the looks of appreciating eyes that thrills you not the speed.

                            Apache 180
                            - Over all value for money, considering the bigger engine and power.
                            - Thrills you, Sporty stance, More speed.

My vote would be for FZ16, buts that is just because I don't like that racing genes in youngsters, it doesn't really work out safe and RTR does give it you.

Have you had the test ride ? If not, go have that first. Cause no matter how good the bike is unless the rider fits it in, its no good. And only you can decide if it fits you. I don't think you would go wrong with any of them if maintained properly.
                            Peace \m/

I think the Apache is better here....... my friends who own them are very happy.

Also consider the Honda Unicorn. It has the most reliable engine in the 150cc segment.
