  • 40+KM per day. Need to save $$

My TVS Victor transported me for a great 6-1/2 years but it has been really giving me issues of late. While I'll be repairing it and keeping it(and I have a thread here ) I'm looking for a replacement. I'm currently commuting in my car and it is ridiculously expensive especially with the stop-n-go traffic

    I'm:
    5'6" tall
    72kgs.

    I'm looking for:

-a simple bike for my daily commute (single) of 40km+ (very heavy traffic)

-not for any long distance touring.

-should be preferably shorter as I will have to put my legs down often during the commute. My Victor has the perfect height- I can have both legs on the road. Even if I cannot have both legs on the road, I'd like to not have to really tilt the bike to put one leg down.

-should be super reliable, no nonsense. my office timings don't allow me time for attention.

-has to run for the next 5 years without grunting.

-has to have decent rear tires as my commute involves lots of sand, potholes, gravel, etc on the road esp. in the aftermath of rain. And with metro-rail coming on the very same road, I expect hell to break loose.

-should return a fuel efficiency of not less than 55kmpl under normal conditions. For my commute I could probably expect 45-50 depending on time of day.

-should be light on the pocket to maintain. Disc brakes, gas-filled suspension, weird gadgetry, multiple cylinders, engine oil for higher cc engines, etc all add up in maintenance.

-would like a disc brake at the front, though it might need maintenance.

-budget is 60-65K (slightly stretchable to accommodate AP's insane taxes)

-finally, I prefer simple looks. Just for an idea, I hate Stunner's looks. Excessive plastic is a no-no.

I had taken a test ride of Honda Dazzler yesterday, while I liked the bike, it was lacking a kick start, chain cover, and being so complicated, I expect to shave off a chunk of my salary every time it needs attention. Not my kind of a bike.

Sorry for the long post. Please help me find a bike with the right balance of my requirements Thanks!!

Yes Xionite is right on the money there- pulsar 135 seems the best for you in terms of it being economical the way you want it. My friends pulls stunts on it and still gets 53 Kmpl. So i guess with sensible riding it should get you 60kmpl. But the looks and gadgetry of the bike maybe too "revolutionary" for you, i guess!
If so then try Discover 150 which has simple, staid looks, no nonsense bike, no gadgetry like digital speedometer etc. but gets the job done, returns more than 55 kmpl as you want it to. Perfect ecocommuter.~
Otherwise there is the Yamaha SZ-X 150cc simple commuter bike from Yamaha, NOT to be confused with the flamboyant FZ series, SZ-X should get the job done with gusto and return about 55kmpl easily.

Are you in Hyderabad? if Yes and if you normally travel on any route to Madhapur, except from Gachibowli or Miyapur, forget all else and get a Discover 100 or a splendour. The traffic at peak times moves slower than a snail where a 100cc bike and a 100 bhp bike move at the same speed. Also, you are going to save a lot of money cos both these retail for less than 50k and both will give you a mileage of more than 60.

            Thanks guys!
How is Bajaj's quality overall? Our entire family has been on TVS so far without many complaints.

Yamaha's bike - SZ blah.. I'm sure will be priced on par or more than Pulsar135 and comes with a drum brake. And Yamaha's bikes are not famous for mileage, are they?

Yep, Hyderabad it is! My commute is from Tarnaka to Hitec City - a nightmare!

These are the exact thoughts I have been having. Maybe I should go for a cheap bike !? I wouldn't want to buy Hero Honda, looks really outdated and the technology is, too. Just new stickers all the time.

I like the Discover 100's technology (without gadgets) - 5speed-all down (bliss), twin spark, and the super mileage they claim.

From TVS, I like all of their bikes . Maybe the new Jive would be a good option for the shitty traffic? Flame looks promising as well.

              Any other recommendations?

If you say you want to keep it for 5 years I would suggest a HONDA...Unicorn or DAZZLER...its a very smooth nd crisp commuter...low on maintenance...just about your budget and has a great mileage ~55-60(depending on riding style).

I dont say Bajaj, TVS or Yamaha are bad in terms of reliability but HONDA's is unquestionable. Period!!!

BTW Jive's a boon for stop and go traffic as your left wrist is spared the pain & returns good mileage

                    Best of luck

Thanks! I will not be buying the Dazzler for several reasons as stated in the OP, and due to its price - 72K +

I'm tilting my preference to a regular 100/110/125 CC commuter as of now, but a VFM 135/150 will also be okay.

tried the TVS Jive ? will be comfortable in traffic and gives a good mileage .
otherwise the Honda twister . both should give 60+ mileage easily .

The Twister is like 1 gear down, 3 up which is a pain. The disco100 is all 5 down which is super easy in traffic (I can leave the bike in neutral, finding neutral on 1down x-up is always a pain) and should also give better mileage.
