  • An Unique Requirement !

    Hi Guys,

Planning to buy (book) a bike in Jan 2011. My previous bikes were all from TVS (Samurai, Shogun, Shaolin, FieroF2 & Apache 150).

    My requirements are:
    • 80kms highway office commute daily
    • Frequent Chennai - Bangalore trips

My priorities are (in the same order as below):
    • Should be very comfortable for long rides
    • Relaxed cruising at 80-90 kmph
    • Good Brakes
    • Maintenance free (I am lazy )
    • Reliable (and spares availability) for at least 4-5 years
    • Mileage not a constraint
    • Preferably vibe free bike
    • Cost within 1L

And my final unique requirement is I want a bike with a full chain cover (even an aftermarket perfect match cover would do) compulsorily . This might sound odd, but I hate open chains, the noise and the maintenance it requires.

Sorry for the long requirement list ! Waiting for your suggestions.

    - Suresh

I think you have narrowed the choice down to ZMA, or ZMR if the budget stretches a bit more.

Spares availability Bajaj is the best. No one could beat them. Also reliability is not concern of Bajaj bike these days. Go for a Pulsar 220 S or F, both fulfill your requirements. Or CB Dazzler is a DMAN!!! good bike

I notice that you majorly have been a 2 stroke guy. None of these 4 strokers would fill your appetite to the brim...

Nonetheless, I guess almost all your requirements point to Karizma R.

            • Should be very comfortable for long rides: Decently comfortable
            • Relaxed cruising at 80-90 kmph : It in fact is one of the most relaxed riders.
            • Good Brakes : Pretty good, better than some others in its class
            • Maintenance free (I am lazy ) : It has been maintenance free however, once the maintenance starts pouring in, you would need to shell insane (and unjustified) amounts for even small puny spares...One big drawback with this bike!
            • Reliable (and spares availability) for at least 4-5 years: Cant comment! However after the split JV, I dont know how would things turn up with Hero.
            • Mileage not a constraint: Good...it shouldn't be for this bike...
            • Preferably vibe free bike: Fantastic relaxed engine
            • Cost within 1L: 80-85K OTR
            • Chain Cover: Incidentally, it has got one...

            All the best...

              @ TS

If you can make with 150CC go for Honda Unicorn or GS 150r & both can cruise @ 80-90kmph easily, you will save money & also get mileage better than ZMA.

if mileage is not a concern, then ZMA will be a perfect choice considering it meets all your requirments.

@devilpulsarian - yes I am also inclined towards ZMA, but the HH guys in Chennai are not taking bookings for both the Karizmas. I am not sure what is the situation in other places.
The only other option is P220, but need to figure out how do I fix a full chain cover on it.
How about GS150R ? Heard Unicorn has also been stopped. Dazzler, again not sure about the chain cover issue!
Any other 150 cc bike good for touring ?

                  Thanks,
                  Suresh

But the Honda guys are not accepting any bookings for Unicorn, they are pushing only Dazzler :-(

GS150R , I was really put off with the attitude of the showroom guys. But anyways if the Bike is good then we can always service it at a Castrol or similar service centre.
By the way, I heard the GS150 top speed is around 105-110 kmph. Is this sufficient for Highways ?

                    Thanks,

These Honda guys want to push Dazzler , Dazzler I have heard is a good bike, but I dint quiet liked the whole design concept & it is your personal opinion if U want to go ahead with it ( btw thier is open type chain cover in this)

GS150r is a very good bike, it can do 90easily & it will be more relaxed since it has an sixth cog, try another showroom & let us not talk about engine of suzuki they are robust enough to last very long.

I did a 110kmph on speedo on my test drive & bike felt very stable & no vibes @ all & I think that suggests it can do 80-90kmph all day long

                        zma or RE

seeing your requirement i can suggest
                        1. Karizma/ZMR
                        2. Any of the 350 cc Royal enfield (TB,STD,ELECTRA)

Since you will be traveling a lot on highway both are good for that.New UCE enfields have service period of 6000 kms now i.e. less maintenance .

My personal choice would be Thunderbird in such case.

RE the only problem is waiting period.....5-6 months :-( and ofcourse the chain cover issue. I don't think we get aftermarket coverrs for RE ?
I am ok with ZMA, but bookings have been stopped!

Well Avy220 again my concern is chain ! Can we fix the P180 chain case on Avy or P220 ? That would solve my problems I guess !
