  • Suggestion required for buying a new 150-180cc bike

    Hi Everyone,

Wish you all a very happy new year 2011!!
I am planning to buy a new bike in a week's time. Have been going through reviews of various bikes in the 150-180 cc range but have not really zeroed in on a bike yet.

I am 31 years 5' 9" married person (so need to travel with my wife also sometimes). Primarily I would be using bike to commute to my office for about 30-35 Kms per day. On weekends my wife may also ride with me or may be we go out for some long rides occasionally.

    I have short listed -
    1. P150/P180 (did a test drive for both and found P180 a bit high and difficult to take a U turn).

    2. Apache RTR Hyper Edge (did a test drive but I think confort for pillion is not there.)

    3. I stay in Pune and work in a software MNC, my work timings are from 12 PM to 9 PM so I may be traveling little late in the night and hence need good head lamps in the vehicle.
    4. If nothing then I will "have to" go for P150 though its too comon and I wanted to take some different vehicle afterall it should't me only P150.
    5. I Do not like unicorn/dazzler.
    6. My budget is 75k max can not stretch it.

I request you guys to please provide your valuable suggestions and guide me.
I have driven Passion plus for 2 years prior to this.

    Thanks in advance!

    happy new year

well, p150, is a very common choice

i suggest you to buy a bajaj product only if you are planning to change your vehicle by 4 or 5 years (max)

    tvs is a smart choice

as per your requirements, i guess SZ-X, SZ-R (with front disc) is an excellent buy!

the rear seat is very comfortable unlike the FZ

what you get is a yamaha

it is a 150cc, good riding position, decent mileage
    large fuel tank

also been awarded bike of the year

    all the best!
    yEs yAmAhA!
    YZF R15, my love

I think p180 is the bike for you...
      its awesome for daily commuting...
as you mentioned taking U turns is a mess but apart from that i found no complaints with the bike....
about its seating being a bit high, my friend who is 5'6" bought a new p180 and cant stand while on seat but you are 5'9" so i think you'll do fine....
also i would like to throw in some suggestions to add in your list
      -Bajaj Avenger(awesome comfort)
      -Yamaha Fazer
-HH Karizma-R (if mileage is not a concern)

Excellent average and bit of a power (13 PS)
        Discover 150 52K onroad

Similar yet good looking, and big bike feel
Yamaha SZ-X (disc brake) 54K onroad

Too common yet ticks all the squares
        Pulsar 150

Better alternative but a bit taller
        Suzuki GS150R

        Safe bait
        HH Hunk and Honda Unicorn/Dazzler

Pulsar 180 and fz both suits for u except pillion comfort. Both has half chain covers. P150 is common but still a very good performer. Since u said no for unicorn and apache u can go for P150. And also consider gs150r which is a better atlernative for unicorn with 6 speed gear box tat helps in highway running.

              Atul,

try a test drive on Yamaha SZ X, Suzuki GS150R HH Hunk / Extreme and decide which suits your need.

as a family man do take your wife and check which one is comfortable
i believe a 5 kms test drive will make you book it.

Thanks to you all for your suggestions.

I am planning to test drive RTR 160 Hyper Edge with my wife as I am little concerned about its rear seating comfort. The other day I drove my friends' RTR 160 and really liked the way I felt in control of the bike.
If this clicks then I will go for RTR otherwsie I am planning to consider Avenger as well, thanks for this suggestion dude.

I am keeping P180 UG4 as my last option only because it does not have kick start and I travelon higway after 9 PM and just in case the bike doesn't start using the push button i will not ave the option of kicking it

You can start the bike without an Electric start or Kick start.

Just pick up a speed of 5+ km with the slop of the road, either by disengaging clutch or in neutral then engage/shift gear. Wollah! There it goes! I'm planning to buy a Unicorn Dazzler. Infact finalized in my heart and brain. And it doesn't have KS too, but i've compromised.

                  Two wheels move a SOUL...

Do you mean to say that P180 doesn't have pillion comfort??

                        Atul

Same case with me abt age and being married. Office to home one way is 33KMs across the City with all sorts of road conditions. Work in Shifts. At least one way ride is in complete dark. Well, why I say this??? it is to say that I understand exactly what your requirement is.

Now, that doesn't mean that there's an exact answer from me for your requirement Here's my take:

                        >> Pillion comfort, let only the missus decide it.
                        >> Leave aside the RTR & P180. Don't even think of the Avenger. Missus will sure scold you regularly otherwise. Unless it is just under 5 KM trips to the market or shopping that she'd be pllion, I would not prefer them.
                        >> The Pulsar 150 is good in comfort and ticks most boxes right as a good all rounder.
                        >> The Unicorn and Dazzler are amazingly confortable for rider and Pillion. Their headlight too is very good - betters most in this list. Handling - superb. Realibiity - Amazing. Pillion ride on rough patches is not as smooth as on P150, GS150R or Hunk.
                        >> The GS150R should be the choice for you here as it counts high in most terms mentioned here. Just change the head light bulb to the one from Hnda spares. The stock bulb is bakwaas. Only reason I am thinking is because you felt the U Turn with P180 wasn't very comfy. This bike too is tall (I don't buy the heavy argument like some people put it as it is only 2-3 kg's heavier than most others, you are tall enough) so you should try it out. Counts on comfort, rideability, reliability & handling.
                        >> Hunk is another good machine for you. Ticks all the right boxes (except for the name!)
                        >> A surprising new entry here is the Yamaha SZ 150. Good stuff. Should try this out. Reliable, smooth, good handler, light on pocket, and yes people are telling that mileage is good unlike its sibling - FZ. Little lower on peak power but torque is good and is pulling well from low end in city with two on board.

What ever you choose, we expect you to tell us the reasons for your choice (so we know what ticked for you) and an ownership report once you own All the best.

i would say look into honda unicorn and dazzler. Good commuting bikes, honda reliability, high FE. however after sales and parts are tad bit expensive post free services and pillion comfort level is good on both of these bikes.

would not recommend you FZ/ Fazer.. i own an FZ, the pillion comfort is horrible. But for solo riding it is the best machine ever.

                          hopes this helps

                          cheers

Ya it will be uncomfortable if pillion wears saree.. The step up seat is high and grab rails are useless for ladies. And also opened chain may not be safe. Saree guard does not have foot rest. But apart from this , the bike is much refined and has got good power for stress free long rides and decent mileage too.

                              Thanks for your suggestions

                              Hi Guys,

Thanks for your suggestions. So, based on your suggestions I have listed my options as --

                              1. RTR-160
                              2. Avenger
                              3. Dazzler/Uni (I dont consider myself that old )
"Ek hi zindagi hai" (there's only one life) - live it the way you want.
So it'll be either RTR or Avenger, I have also included P180.

I saw today SZ-R, it looks like a 135 cc bike, even SS-125 is better than this.
So if at all I have to come down and pick I'd rather go for P135 than SZ-R.
Come on guys I am only 31 not 61
People started using words like due to "age" you should consider this vehicle.
