Reply to Why Shine..Why not SS125

Don't you think this person is inclined to mileage than performance and in case of mileage,Shine shines. Secondly I experienced Gladi or your SS125 has lower 'low-end' torque than Shine, so with pillion on a city road I would choose Shine rather than Gladi.
And how many times you can ride above 60 in a city?

And if he can consider little bit less mileage and want to experience power then why not Hunk(cheapest 150 which can satisfy the thirst) than SS125? It's just a few thousand away from the budget limit.

Well.. to be frank.. above 60 a lot of times. One may not go to 70+, but 60 certainly, while I was in Bangalore, I had the same opinion that you can't really cross 60 in city. But if you are riding regularly in Bangalore, then you know that most of the times you can maintain 60-65kmph. I understand that's not the case on some roads, which are particularly busy.

IMO.. honestly Shine doesn't offer great advantage in mileage when compared to SS125/Disco 125. Earlier when SS125 was called as Gladiator it used to suffer from this image, but SS125 in it's current form is what an ideal 125 should be. Discover 125 is also a very good bet.. after all it was the leader in 125 segment till it was discontinued to make way for Disco 135.

According to me the best bikes in 125cc segment goes like this

        1. Suzuki Sling shot : It's a steal, the best bike money can buy ...you already said you are not interested...
        2. HH Super Splendor/Glamour : These are very good bikes as well, check out new avtars.
        3. Shine : Again a good & decent buy, Honda engine is the USP !!
        4. Yamaha Gladiator/equivalent : Very good performers, most loved 125cc bikes.

Avoid buying D125, it's same wine in new bottle, no idea when Bajaj will sack it.

There's nothing beneath Slingshot! Poor power figure for a 125cc. D150 is more value for money than this.
          In my opinion:
          Pusalr 135 (performance seeking guy)
          Yamaha Gladiator(Cruising and off roading)
Honda Shine(for commuters, long term steady average, less maintenance)

I have however not had a close look at the D100 neither have I had a chance to ride it, but looking at the sales and specifically the kind of customer who goes for it, I have no reason to doubt its quality or reliability.
However, I do seem to have a hunch that you are looking for a bike from HH or HMSI.
This might be your order of preference, in terms of mileage.
            1) Splendor +,#,pro, etc. etc. ( I think either the Super splendor or NXG variant is 125cc)
            2) Passion +,#,Pro or whatever the new stickering is called.
            3) Honda Twister
            4) Honda Shine - This is a pathetic piece of machinery (IMHO, I really doubt if this is really made by Honda and not outsourced to some cheap Chinese company). Not recommended unless you are a real big Honda fanboy.
            5) Honda Stunner - This is something you might enjoy on the long rides and might actually give you the best of both worlds.

But.... A real big BUT, if you are really looking for something else
            1) Discover 100 - The bike with the best mileage currently in the market.
            2) Discover 125/150 - For those Long rides at the cost of mileage
            3) Yamaha SS125 - Much more refined than the Discover 125
            4) Yamaha SZ-R - A step above the SS125 but with a lesser mileage than the Discover150.

You both ever owned a Shine? ever done more than 1km on it???? Doesnt even seem so.

I have one. Owned for over 5 years. Still runs smooth as it was in the first year. Same constant above 50 mileage. Heck it improves to 55-60 if u go ride long.

My problem here is not you ppl advising against it. Heck most times i advise ppl to go for gladiator. But its the sheer disrespect shown to a bike. Every bike has its pluses and minuses. Shine is a typical city bike.. but i have ridden long distances. It can do 60 very comforatably. and not go above 85? u sure u were on a shine or on a cycle with a sticker that says shine?? shine can go upto 100 easily. if u know how to ride properly u can take it to 95 within a distance of 1 km.

Now you would say i havent ridden any other bikes. Right?? I have. I ride around on my neighbour's Discover 110 all the time. nice bike. peppy ride. And gladiator ya one of my college mates had it. but it was the first generation one. Was good.. but got rusted in many places soon. But i love the looks of the new gladiator. Even driven splendour's and passion's. Real old ones(maybe 10 years plus). Must say those had super smooth engines but brakes and lights all rest of them were not in good condition.

To the guy who started this thread and ignored every single reply. You booked a passion pro right? Good choice i guess. Not a fast bike, but a bike u can carry around for years. and would be a good ride with the current traffic and petrol prices.

Btw when u get out on the road, wear a helmet. There are people who only travel above 65 <cough, vrugonnab, cough> even if the road if full of ppl. If u get in their way probably they'll mow u down so as to ensure their speed stays above 65.

Least powered 125cc with least mileage figures according to Bike india. Not to mention Suzuki's ASS.

              2. HH Super Splendor/Glamour : These are very good bikes as well, check out new avtars.
Pathetic mileage and pathetic power for a 125cc. They are still using horizontal layout engine.
PS: I own a Super splendor.

What makes you say that? New discover is based on discover 100 so its lighter(118kgs I guess) than older one. and With more torque low down and added 5th cog Its lot better bike than the older one.
The best performer of the 125cc lot is P135. Even better than some of 150cc's arround.

Best commuter is Shine/D125. Really cant decide out of these two.
Althouth If I had to choose, I'd take D125 out of these because of better power to weight ratio and 5th gear.

Yamaha Gladiator comes in between the above two segmets.

I have done a good 1000kms on Shine before coming to conclusions.. that's what made me to bump out Shine from my options. So don't just boast about your bike, ride the other ones before going gaga over your shine. It goes to 100 easily, really? you must be having some kind of hallucination.. just go get yourself checked. Before arguing anything more on this, just go and check top speeds reported by various people on Shine. Yes, Shine is a good bike within city where you are not going to do 60+ speeds regularly.. but even Twister/Passion can do the same in city. So what's the USP of Shine and that too after paying a hefty 60k.. all you get is a 55kmpl on a sedate run. For god's sake ride a P135 to know what kind of performance you can expect from a 60k machine.. simply beats the pants of competition without any effort, all this while giving you the same mileage of 55kmpl. So what's the point in going for a Shine?? Just do a 90kmph+ run on p135 and then repeat it on Shine, you will know the difference.. while P135 is still feels like a lot of juice is left.. Shine feels like going out of breath as soon as you hit 80kmph... from there it takes long time to reach 90kmph.. 100?? certainly out of question on Shine.. no two ways about it.

My point is Shine is a good bike, but pales in comparison to the options available at 60k.. heck, D150 is retailing at 55k.. why don't you just compare that to D150 and come back with some points for Shine?? I understand that you own a Shine and love it, but that doesn't make it the best bike in 60k.. nobody said it's a bad bike.. I just said that I wouldn't recommend it to anybody willing to pay 60k, it's just selling on Honda brand name (for the price it's asking).

2011 hero honda hunk or yamaha SZ-r ?

                  Hi Experts...

I am planning to change my RX-135 to some new 150cc bike. I have test driven almost all 150cc bikes in Indian market since past few months

I had liked GS150R's ride comfort a lot...but cudn't stand its weight, height , average looks and finally Suzuki A.S.S..So rejected it.

From my experience, I hav shortlisted Hero honda hunk and Yamaha SZ-r.

Now I am confused between the low price advantage of SZ-r and better A.S.S,looks & resale value of Hunk

Please suggest which one to choose ? My budget is 75k Max.

Your suggestions would be valuable for me...

                  Regards.

I think RTR 160/180 or P180 will be perfect option for you.. keeping in mind that you are used to RX135's speed thrills.

Frankly, I don't understand this logic of resale value, if you are not going to sell it for 3-4 years it doesn't matter at all. You will end up selling it for couple of thousands more than the other bikes, at best.

Anyways.. since you have already short listed Hunk & SZ-R, take a test ride, that should clear lot of doubts in your mind and you will also realize which one suits you the best, I mean you will get an idea of overall feel of the bike. That said, if you aren't looking at any highway rides, then go for SZ-R for city rides it's good enough. Any reason why you are not looking at options like P135/D150?

                        Hi vrugonnab,

Thanks for ur valuable reply.... RTRs are good but lags in mileage. My 8 yr old RX gives more than that

I want a real upgrade of RX 135...still i hv not come across any bike in 4 strokes. .........ple help me

                        & P135/D150 are really cheapo s ...test driven both...both r pathetic !!! ( no hard fealings bro ... I m not used to bajaj )

I hv test driven Hunk... gud suspension, nice look, nice seat, hard gear shifts,
rear seat is at higher side. But overall its a good package...what u suggest?

& SZ-r on other hand is lighter, good seats, decent suspension, but questionable efficiency. Asked quite a few SZ owners, and came to know that its not consistent in mileage. Initially it wud give 48 .the reduce to 40.....38 ...so on

What is ur opinion on Hunk?

                        thanks ...

Well.. D150/P135 are certainly cheap compared to Hunk, but not pathetic, more so when you compare them to Hunk!! It does have a rear disc & may be tubeless tyres which bump up the price. My assumption was your usage would mainly be in city.. in that case there is no need to spend that kind of money, when the same performance/mileage combo is available at much less. But, I know very well that "To each, his own". So, enjoy your ride.

By the way tubeless tyres are good in case of punctures, they will provide you safety by not deflating immediately. But, yes.. a bit difficult than normal tyres to fix the puncture, but again you are not going to fix the puncture, right? why bother about it

I hv test driven Hunk & GS150 & Dazzler once again...& My thumbs up to GS150 without any doubts

Initially I thought it wud be heavy to handle ...but when I took a 5km ride
( thanks to Mr. Pandu of Apple Auto Bangalore) I was sure that this is the right bike for me. Its a very well designed City or cruiser bike.

Now I m going to book this bike next week.

Pls share your thoughts...will there be a problem when I drive in busy bangalore traffic, because of its weight ?
