  • Have I chosen the right bike ?

    Hi xBhp folks,

First off, thanks for approving my membership.I will keep this post simple & lucid. Pour in your thoughts.

    Chronology of my bike ownership/usage:
    Caliber(the original) - 1999-2005
    Standard 350,Passion plus - 2009-2011

    Current Requirement
    :
I currently don't have a two-wheeler (or any wheeler). I'll be doing a 320-400km roundtrip once a week (max twice). Onward journey will be mostly on a weekday (6AM or early start) & return journey (between 6pm-8pm start) will be on the next day. If I'm crazy (or when I feel like it,I will be doing this journey twice a week). Travel is for work reasons. That's going to be my major commute which will amount to anywhere between 160-200km/day x 2 = 320-400 km.This,if you didn't guess it already, will be 90% on the highway. Add to that about 100km for other local errands(city). So about 400-500 km/week. And no, I'm not a tourer (& don't know if I'll end up being one). I currently make this commute through bus.

    What I've chosen:
I started off by evaluating GS150R (TR'd it,liked it) then someone suggested Karizma ZMR & by an inexplicable whim of craziness, booked the CBR250R C-ABS(No didn't TR it).

    Why I'm confused:

Although I can spare the money for the CBR250R, I'm confused because of a couple of reasons.
    1. Do I really need a CBR250R?
    2. Will I be able to take my mother out every now & then (yes, that's one of my requirement) considering the small pillion? - Awaiting to get a TR with my mother as pillion
    3. Do I really need a CBR250R? for one long ride a week. Won't a GS150R suffice?
Other additional confusions (solely because it's a CBR250R)
    4. How am I going to protect it when it's parked at work (from all those eager pairs of hands and feet of lunatics? )
    5. How long will it take to get used to it's driving style?

Thanks for reading. I hope to get some insight(s) from a different perspective and what better than from xBhp.

P.S: I booked the bike from Hasan Honda,Pondicherry and wanted a TR. After a few minutes of deliberation, the sales chap brought a bike for me to try.It was clear(from the rear mudguard sticker) that it was already registered to one "Rohit Kumar" and I politely refused to TR it. So Rohit Kumar, if you're reading this, Hasan Honda wasn't treating your bike nicely. I am quite sure they're following it as a norm.(This was the same case in Suzuki showroom too)

That kind of things many dealers do. Here in Bangalore Haiku Honda has cheated many people in cases like those. They gave me display piece and said that the waiting period was 3months and still claimed it was not a display piece. Even in teflon-coating they did just once.
Anyways I think there is a vast difference between Honda CBR-250 C-ABS much premium compared to GS-150R. I have ridden CBR. Its forward biassed but lesser than R15. You will get used to it after some initial pain. Its fun to drive which you will miss in GS-150. GS-150 is 150Kgs for just 150cc bike so a pain in the city. I think pillion ride also you can do albeit with some trouble. But overall booking CBR250 was a very wise choice. Congrats!!
      Whats there in a signature?

It will help you clear few myths on CBR 250R & what you could really expect. If you set your expectation right & it doesn't matches with the above, you can simply knock off CBR 250R from your list.

The point 2 invalidates the CBR option, no way will your mother bear being the pillion on this bike.

Your other option is you can consider the RE Classic 350 or Electra.

The pillion comfort is great IMHO. But traditional style sitting I don know but with your mother as pillion and if you go drive sensibly I dont see any reason she cant sit on it.

But don expect an Electra or Classic style pillion comfort

In between I think argee was pointing to post 7500 & 7600 in ownership thread of CBR250r go through it. You will get to know the Ceeber better
                  CBR250R |
                  Bajaj Pulsar 180 - dts i |
                  Bajaj CT 100

Sometimes it takes a whole tankful of fuel before you can think straight.

It was not that far on the map.

I'd anyday take a Silver Electra 350 except for the waiting period & the reputation of the dealer in pondicherry.

Thanks Chandru. I will take a TR sometime this week with pillion (when they sort out the demo bike)

if you have enough money to spare, then don't feel guilty about owning cbr.then you can always have a look at low cost mile munchers like zma,zmr,p220.
and the question remains why do i race?
every finishing line is the begining of a new race.

(:)people keeps on saying add spark to life, bajaj got hold of that idea and added an extra spark to bike.

Quick update - Have booked Electra UCE

                          Hi Guys,

It took a while to take a test ride on the CBR250R with my mother as pillion. She wasn't comfortable at all as I had expected. As I had noted,it was also a requirement. So, cancelled it and booked a Silver Electra UCE on 4th June in Chennai. 3-6 months expected delivery.

Thanks for the responses and apologies for the delay in update.

Anytime this is a right decision. CBR 250 is good but the real question is can our mother board it with out any issues?? As the bike is heighted so it won't be that friendly ever non heighted pillion seats would be comfortable for our mothers. My friends and me too get scolding for owning a CBR250 and R15 just becuase of this reason, where as we are very happy with the performance. But feel guilty when it's parents need. Today i think i should have booked Electra or Classic.!!

A quick update and a Query

                              Hi Folks,

Quick update: I'd booked a Silver Electra on 4th June 2012 from legend motors, Chennai. My booking status (or a queue number rather) when I booked was around 23. I was advised to give them a call at the end of every month. The following are my call details and the corresponding statuses
                              1. 15th June 2012 - Number 24 (Striange, it went up)
                              2. 29th June 2012 - Number 19 (relief, that's decreasing)
                              3. 29th July 2012 - Number 21 (went up again)

When I asked the sales rep who updated me on the status as to why it went up rather than going down, he gave me the most absurd of excuses "It must have been wrong. They sometimes do that". I keep insisting that it should go up but he came back to his same excuse that it will do gown next month and that I should be receiving it in the time I was promised (3-4 months).
While I don't mind waiting, I am not sure if I can trust this dealer anymore because of the inconsistency in the waiting number reported.
Now to the query or rather queries
                              1. Is this common ?
                              2. Am I being pushed down the queue ?
                              3. Has anyone had to face such a thing?

I will be going down to the dealer to visit and honestly in the mood to cancel my booking (I know, they hardly care because of the amount of bookings they've) . What do you guys suggest?

                              Cheers
                              Santhosh
