  • Bike for touring ~1.5 Lacs

    Hi bikers,

I'm planning to buy my first bike (from my first and second salary) and would like some expert opinions, as i have quite limited experience of touring - 2 trips of under 1000 kms each. I've owned a pulsar 150 for a brief time, but it was long ago.

I'll present my budget, my requirements, my priorities, my options and (although i'm pretty much very open about choosing bikes) my reasons for not preferring certain bikes. I could be prejudiced or just very much wrong, so please feel free to correct me, i'd really appreciate it!

Budget : flexible, but would prefer to keep my bike + gear under 1.5L (Could stretch for CBR, but skeptical about VFM)

    Requirement:
    1. touring ~400kms/day
    2. Random city driving (movie/date :P)

    Priority:
    1. comfort on long rides
    2. good build quality - should perform well in the long term, shouldn't have vibes, shouldn't need very frequent maintenance
    3. Pillion comfort
    4. full-fairing (optional, i like the looks of fairing

Very high torque and speeds like cruising at 130-140 kmph do not seem that important, keeping in mind i'd rarely need to go to those speeds.

    Options:
    Yamaha R15 v2.0 (uncomfortable riding posture + expensive for a 150cc bike)
Royal Enfield (long waiting period + frequent and high maintenance costs)
Pulsar 200ns (may not be suitable for touring, no fuel injection- though thats not an issue as it supposedly still gives a good mileage)
Duke 200 (not suited for my purpose at all)
    CBR 150 (overpriced)
CBR 250R (without doubt its THE bike, but considering i dont need that kinda power, not worth stretching my budget)

Karizma ZMR (so far seems to be my best bet for comfort, power, although mileage is nowhere near impressive)

Would like your opinions on whether my assumptions are wrong, and what bike is most suitable for me. also if there are certain issues I should be aware of before buying a bike.

Thanks for taking time to read and respond.

MODS/ADMIN: Before posting, I've read quite a few threads and tried searching the forum for specific threads, but not all of my queries were answered adequately. If such threads do exist, please provide links before you disapprove the thread. Thanks!

        Thanks aargee.

I'd already read the post, and through the other important posts in the CBR 250R ownership forum from your signature only!

I even test drove it, and really liked the performance, but its like a BMW sedan - Its powerful and amazing to own, but i cant afford it!

But that's only one bike eliminated out of the others. Could you advise on the next best?

Ok, then rule it out & check the next bikes under 1.5
          1. Duke 200
          2. Yamaha R15
          3. Pulsar 200NS
          4. Hero Honda ZMA

          Good luck with your choices

The Honda CBR250 is the best buy provided you can stretch your budget by a little. The non-ABS version can be had for a little extra. If not, the RE Thunderbird 350 is the most comfortable cruiser you can get in your budget. It will cost you around 1.25 OTR so you can save some cash for a proper riding gear too.

              Zmr

              Go for ZMR
It has good pillion comfort than R15.
Has a full fairing for your requirement .
Has fuel injection and full chain cover for touring.
The build quality is good and the engine is reliable.

Please post in the ZMR ownership group to get mileage figures and I think ZMR returns the same average as the other bikes you have mentioned

CBR250~ you said you wont need too much power and hate cruising at high speeds and also its out of your budget then why 250R?

R15~pillion comfort is compromised but it suits all other needs.

CBR150~though overpriced it looks uber cool atlleast to me .

RE~they are of different kind you wont complaint after getting one Do TESTDRIVE it.

Undoubetly the ZMR. Fits every slot perfectly. Though I'd suggest ZMA-R simply cuz it looks alot more macho and stylish to me. Not Fi in the Zma but I dont think its needed.

Pulsar 220 is another good options comes with a semi fairing. Helps in touring. Fantastic mileage for a 220cc.

Fazer is the last best option from my side. Yamaha engine is sure reliable at high speeds and in the long run. Spares are cheap too. Mileage of 40kmpl on constant high speed touring is evident.

Aren't you considering P220F/Karizma, they are decent options for a tourer. P200 with full fairing is rumoured to be in works, not sure how true it is!

As you dont need a fast tourer the CBR is out, Next best options around a lakh region are the enfields, P220 and the ZMR.
The enfields with their twin spark engines return good mileage for their engine size (expect around 36 -38kmpl) and can cruise at 80kmph all day long, should be sufficient for your touring needs though its not as fast as its japanese competitors in the priceband.
The next option i feel is P220. With its semi fairing, cheap parts and that brilliant projector DC lighting setup, touring is a delight. You can consider this as the next best for fast tourer after the CBR 250. (Efficiency ranges from 38kmpl in city to upto 46kmpl on highways)
The last option you have is ZMR, tried tested and reliable workhorse. Efficiency range is around 36kmpl inside city and 40+ on highways) but the fairing at the front looks too big and bike does not look that proportionate (Looks are subjective). Pick up if you are ok with the looks.
                      Fun Starts at Redline!!!

Foe this superly think RE only!! that too Electra or TBTS best!!
RE UCE are not like previous ones which are still irritating the customers, but it's the machine which has made mob to wait for more than 1 yr to get their rides!! RE is best if you can maintain it periodically with love!! Great Torque and average speed of 100kmph not bad!!

lol....absolutely insane comment..don't mind please. Actually you don't know what R15 is so you are talking this. R15 is priced at right place. I am owing one from more than 2 yrs and i see no issues with the price or performance. It's real sports bike with VFM!!

as per your requirement(after you ruled out CBR250R),a ZMR is a best bet..
                            - its most comfortable in its class, even for pillion rider.
                            - it return better FE figures then ZMA & similar or better than its competitors.
                            - as you mention you like full fairing so ZMR got it & moreover it looks big & that's good according to me.
                            - reliable & proven engine setup.so you won't have to go to SVC regularly.
                            - more than decent power for Indian roads.
                            - over ZMA, it has got FI,rear disc,TL tyres, split handlebars n more goodies with better FE & power.

to sum up everything..its kind of a complete package considering reliability,goodies,looks,power,comfort..

                              i would recommend:

                              1) Pulsar 200 NS and then
                              2) ZMA-R

Pulsar even though not fuel injected is a potent tourer and with Liquid cooling the engine does not stress out even if you keep the rpm at a band of 7000 where 200NS will be hovering around 100 kmph.. Mileage is at par with others in this category and the rear seat is also comfortable. Already MG and gang has done an extensive test on it and the results seem to be positive. Bajaj Pulsar range has come a long way since those early days where reliability was a concern.

I would say though for extremely high speed runs like 100 kmph and above expect a good whiplash from wind as it is of devoid of any fairing.

ZMA and ZMA-R both are proven tourers on XBHP and have the largest after sales service in India. The good side is one is bound to get one SVC or a local mechanic who knows how to work on a Hero/Hero Honda engine should anything decides to go wrong. However, personally i am not a big fan of the design and under current circumstances, i find both these models to be showing signs of age.

I would say go for NS and with the pending amount from your budget of 1.5 lkhs buy good riding gear and touring gear.

                              Cheers,
