  • Begginer confusion

I am a third year engineering student looking for a bike

i have been using a honda activa since the past 1.5 years
    no past biking experience

since being a student and unable to buy a bike by my own and pay for the maintenance i assumed a budget of 60K and asked dad to get me a bike and had made up my mind for a 125cc bike(discover 125 st mostly)

then i spoke to dad and he says buy which ever u want just tll me the amount(par limit mein)

so i asked dad for the 200ns and he sort of seemed to agree he will buy me one but not completely sure(he even joked get a bike of ur choice...but i wont give u a choice for selecting a girl :P )

so i went to the bajaj showroom to take a test ride and test rode both d125st and p200ns

    obviosly the pulsar was better

the discover had hard gear shifts but the salesperson said it is due to the bike being new and it will get smoth with time

(well it was the first time i was trying to ride a bike with the 1 down rest up pattern using toe shifter so had issues with changing gears)

    long story short

my daily run is hardly 10 km now but after a year i will ge graduating and getting a job

is it worth spending 35k more and getting a 200ns over a 125cc bike for a complete begginer?

or shud i get a small bike and graduate up the cc ladder?

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

choose as per your budget, but considering pulsar 200 ns being pretty quick for indian roads i suggest st.
and the question remains why do i race?
every finishing line is the begining of a new race.

#i have learnt to manipulate my own adrenaline and the perception of biking is different.
      #overkill is underrated.
#how random roads may appear there is always a destination.sigpic
#i don't subscribe to co-incidence,either it is the rider or the other moron on the road

(:)people keeps on saying add spark to life, bajaj got hold of that idea and added an extra spark to bike.

If i were you.. i would have considered 150 cc bikes like CBZ, Hunk, FZ. They have sufficient power to keep one entertained for a long time.

Buying one 125 cc now and a 200 cc later (after 5 years).. you gain nothing. Actually you lose on money.

Consider, 125 cc bought at 60K and sold for 35K after 2 years after completing 15K kms(double of your present run).

Pulsar 220 bought at 85K today, are equivalent!! even if you consider mileage benefits.

I suggest test riding 150cc bikes. Rtr, Dazzler, GS150, FZ/Fazer. Pick what suits you.
As for getting 125cc then upgrade, bad idea, for your level of running the saving is low, but changing bike, you'll loose a lot of money.

I own an Rtr160, bought last year because I love its powerful, rev-happy engine. FZ has fat tyres amd good looks, dazzler has mileage and smooth engine. Pick what suits you. Also remember each has its weakness, so learn to live with it.

I think 200ns will give you thrill start into the biking experience, its not that much big deal, you can ride it, as just you need to be careful while on road as 200ns is quit responsive, adding almost 25% attention will give you double fun of biking...

But it must depend on your budget and your other requirements, If only the concern is a begginer, I think you must miss the chance to buy a very good machine...

Actually, there are people out there who started riding on a full fledged superbike! So, if you take the riding seriously in beginning, you will come to know that the progress would be quite fast.Even I started to ride on a 150cc bike[and not a 100-125cc] 3 years ago.

The shift pattern thing you said, well, one can adjust with it very easily, say 2-3 days..

A 150cc bike would be ideal for you, you'll not have to think about maintenance expenses now nor crib about low power after you start riding more after your B.Tech.
Its the fusion of a two wheeled machine & a human being which creates a true biker.

not interested in FZ or any yamaha bikes

infact with the terrible honda experience i will think 100 times b4 considering a jap bike
costlier and less VFM with costlier spare parts which u need to think when u have pot holes on roads like a polka dotted shirt(ok its a hyperbole but u get the point)
                    so no unicorn or dazzler
gs150 is a good bike but many people stay away from it due to spares unavailability and lack of good service network

so ns is not a street bike??

evry day passes and dad says i will think
be ready for a 60K budget or a 100K budget

will try to check the rtr 160

i asked a bike entusiast friend he suggested get the best bike in ur budget as u might get bored with a 125cc as i got bored with the activa 1 years after riding it

a 200cc will keep u happy for a good long time and it has the same FE as most gearless scooters

Your enthusiast friend and I think quite alike . The only slight variation I would suggest is to always pick the highest bhp bike in your budget. That bike has the potential to keep you happiest for longest. Don't go for a 125 unless you have a strict mileage requirement.

Even if you run the 200NS for 15k km in the next 2 years, all you lose extra on petrol is ~20k over the course of 2 years (extra Rs. 850/month going by conservative estimates) over the Discover. If this is a big amount for you, please stick to the Discover 125ST (which feels almost as powerful and as big as most contemporary air-cooled 150s). If not, we already have a winner.

Any ways,If you can afford, then get tha 200NS.It is the best, under 1 lac bracket now And yes,it is a street bike, secong best to DUKE.Or else,if money is a constraint, RTRs will do. Happy biking

I was in a similar dilemma, some years ago.. Even I bought an activa as was frightened to ride a geared motorcycle. Within a year, I got so irritated, I sold it & went to get a cbz or an unicorn.. But saw karizma in the showroom & booked it.. Was still scared inside, if I would be able to handle a geared bike. But over some months I learnt & was pretty capable to ride it without any issues later on.
Dont worry, get the NS. You already are comfortable with gears, so its just matter of few days.. No second thought for the NS, I say.!

IF you know to ride a bike then:

There is nothing that whether a first time biker should go with a 200+ or 100+ or 150cc+?? If you are comfortable riding bikes then you can handle any bike!!

What if today you buy a Discover ST125 and later after you graduate to job in 1-2yrs then what will you do ?? sell it ??

it's better to with any bike that you feel you are satisfied,
If you are a speed/power with better features freak then NS200
If you are like average ride and good mileage with less than 150cc Discover 125ST!!

And more thing it's all about your budget!!

Listen to your heart and mind!!
