  • Decided, Hero Hunk (probably w KickStart): Confused over single or dual disk variant

    Dear All,

After a lot of reviews and TD's I have decided to go for Hero Hunk. I am a 25yr, 5'10, 78kg guy currently based in Bangalore, with riding habits of average 55-60kmph (city)-70kmph (highways). Will be booking the model in a week or so.
Though I am having a couple of quick queries on the disc variant to choose, costs incurred etc.

    1. A showroom informed me that a new version of Hunk gonna launch with KickStart.
Did anyone else heard of the same?

    2. Which disc variant should I go for? Single or Dual?
i am confused, because of several reviews stating Hunk's front disk is not that effective etc. and drum-to-frontdisc braking ratio is not that great, so suggested to go for dual disc version.

    3. If going for dual-disc what are the costs incurred in future for servicing of the brakes/fluid etc?
    Is it costs high?

    4. Being in Bangalore, any suggestions, from which showroom to purchase the bike?
Based on your experience of purchase.

Please advise. I am primarily looking for a feedback for queries 2,3,4.

Post Update: Bought Hero Hunk 2012 with kickstart and single-disc variant for Rs. 79783 from Bangalore this November 2012.

    Thanks in advance_Dev G.

Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

go for dual disc option. anytime more reliable than the drum option. its more controllable than the drum brakes. if required you can also install the Pressure based ABS systems

mine has done 125000 kms and as yet never needed to top up the front disk rake fluid. its maintainance free except if the line rapture or if the seals break.

@Rockerz: You are supposed to replace brake fluid every 2 (max 3) years regardless of mileage. I would suggest you to get yours changed. @DebaroonGupta but thats the only maintenance it ever requires apart from brake pad replacement. But Brake Shoes (in case of Drum brakes) also need replacement periodically.

The benefits of a Disc setup over a Drum setup are:
        1. Superior stopping force
        2. Superior brake feedback
        3. Less brake fade
        4. You need not carry a spare cable all the time (in case you intend to tour). A bottle of brake fluid can be bought practically anywhere and is easier to carry on a bike than spare cables (since they can snap anytime without warning).

Go for dual discs. They are always better than a disc drum combination. You get a more potent braking force and much shorter braking distance. Like someone mentioned above, you can also add a basic ABS system later on if you go with discs. And from what I now, discs are easier to maintain than a drum. You won't be having too many issues with it. Regarding the bike, since you haven't put up any specific requirements or such, can't be very descriptive about it. Overall its a nice bike. Do check the ownership thread too.

Have ou ridden Drum brake bikes ?? And have you TD dual disc Hunk ???

DId you notice any difference in response and confidence while ride Single Vs Dual Disc bike ??

Cost won't be at jahangir's Khajana!! It would be almost same!! Hero's parts are not costly as compare to Yamaha or Honda i guess!!

So that won't effect you in future or present.

Dual Disc will save your life and gain confidence right from the next moment you start riding the dual Disc.

Dual disc is more better in controlling speed or panic braking they act quickly than drum brakes!!

                Go for Dual Disc only!!

If you don't see the difference in dual and Single then TD again and Again, in every attempt increase your speed.

Are you sure you won't cross 60kmph ?? if this is your Laxman rekha then DIsc is waste!! And if yes some day you are likely to go 80+-100+kmph then this feature will help you a lot!!

btw, I just noticed, are you 100% sure you won't cross 60 kmph? Even on the highways? or did you mean city rides?

You can wait for the kick starter model to release coz i can surely tell you that the bikes of hero-cbz and hunk both will be launching with the kick starter by the end of the this yr... maybe by diwali time..... IMO you shud wait and you shud definitely go with the dual disks..... no prob with that.....

                      @Ezilkannan, @somen1984 -
I have made changes to the original post. What i meant was I dont overspeed and like driving in city conditions at around 55KMPH and on highways max 70kmph.

The version i TD was a single disc one and there was a screeching sound when rear drum brakes were applied.
But as you can understand the testdrive allowance by the showroom guys.. "Sir, aage jo crossing hai waha se U turn leke laut aaiye.", it was not a satisfactory TD i had. But I had drove my friends single disc hunk and m impressed with the smoothness and feeling that the bike offers.

If it is then Yamaha is more lovable ...lol..

And i guess the segments should matter here too. I am dead sure 150cc bikes of Hero won't be as compare to R15.

Mine R15's Front Disc Pad is for 480 + 150 labour
                            Rear : 725 + 220 labour

and what are ZMR Disic pad costs ??

ZMR/ZMA-R front disc brake pad of Nissin used to cost whooping 2400/- (an imported one)..but now they started producing it in India itself which costs 1200/- + labor..that of Ninja is 1500/- :P
forgot the price of rear disc pad's price..will check it in bills..
