  • CBZ/Hunk/Unicorn/Pulsar180 : Which bike should I buy?

    Hi Friends,

I have been riding a Pulsar 150 (2003 model) for more than 9 years and I want to change it now. However I am confused as I am not able to pinpoint a bike to purchase in the 150-180 CC category. I have ruled out Yamaha (pillion support not good) and TVS Apache (too low for my liking) and shortlisted the following. My budget is around 80K and my primary usage would be commuting. I tried out few 125 CC bikes but wasn't able to adjust to the low power .

I have shortlisted the following bikes. Please share your opinions on which one to choose:

    1. CBZ
    2. Hunk
    3. Honda CB Unicorn
    4. Pulsar 180

I plan to use this bike for 5 years and expect good FE as well as a good resale value with minimum of maintenance cost. I know I am asking a lot from a bike but need your help is choosing the one which comes nearest to my requirements.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Now world is moving ahead in terms of techs and feature so even you should consider better bikes for daily rides!!
So any person should look for
      1. Tubeless Tyres
      2. Disc brakes
      3. Self start
      4. Easy to handle
      5. FE
Why unicorn ?? Why not Dazzler ??

From the above lot i would recommend Hunk/CBZ, because it comes with dual disc as an option and it has good FE as compare to other 150s too along with Hero backing, I will come later on part of resale!! HUnk has more better looks INMO.

If you consider Dazzler? then Dazzler is a best bet to go with, because it has monoshocks which helps in handling, Dual Disc, good FE around 50-55kmpl, good pillion seat, comfortable ride and a Honda engine to enjoy!!

Minimum maintenance cost totally depends on how you ride ?? Where ride ?? How better Servicing you do ?? etc..

Hero or Bajaj are today's affordable price spare parts and SVC.

Resale: India today is growing rapidly in all aspects, so after 5 years people would search for FI, Dual Disc, more beter FE or more better performance, more beter designs. And I am sure in coming years these existing models would be like out dated would hit a bad resale value , let it be any brand or bike!! But yes as years go 100-125cc would get more demand due to growing fuel prices!! But your is 150-180cc range, So i think resale should not be your points

In my opinion you can go for the hunk/xtreme(as the new batches have name changed) and also come with the kick starter..... The big seats of the xtreme will make the journey more confortable, while the seating postion of hunk is a little better than cbz..
the fuel efficiency you can get is around 45+ in the city and 50+on the highway...
and regarding the spares and service cost, they are really very cheap with the Hero's so many service stations at many location u will never feel depreived of help at any place..... But the final decision is upto you....

you've been riding a pulsar right. I think going for the P180 makes a lot of sense. It will feel like an upgrade. But, I would prefer to suggest the unicorn. Its one of the best. Monosuspension, dual disc, best engine there is in the segment, fuel efficiency and honda reliability. Good deal!!
Don't matter what it is: Touring; Racing; Commuting. All I know is, I belong on the saddle.

          Rides : Honda CB Twister(Feb 2011 - Present) | TVS Apache RTR 180 ABS(Sept 2012 - May 2016) | Honda CBR250R C-ABS Repsol(March 2017 - Present)

Thanks everybody. One more question I had was that is it a good time to buy any of the above bikes or should I wait for 2013 just in case the manufacturers decide to give them a face-lift? BTW I am leaning towards Hunk as of now .

Segment you are looking is a commuter with 150cc so it won't be advisable to wait and see what would be launched a head ?? ANy launch after show would take a good time for public launch which can be a 7 months to 1 yr too. So go ahead and buy the Hunk with Dual Disc and enjoy the time ahead.

This wait would be better for any one who is looking for power/performance bikes like 250cc or + or even in 150cc performance bike.

Commuter are commuter more or less would be same. But any upgrade would surely call for an addtional money!!
              So you decide now.
Hunk has every thing apart from mono shock and FI. If you need mono shock then go for Dazzler!

I don't know why,in kerala dazzler did not make an impact like unicorn.People still prefer unicorn.Even people in servicing center are telling that unicorn's engine is far better.I know dazzler and unicorn posses more or less same engine, but still!

Frankly I don't like dazzler, maybe it is because of the looks. It seems more suited for college going guys. I am not considering CB Unicorn because it hasn't changed by Honda at all. The looks are still dated, no option for rear disc brakes, no digital speedometer.

                    Either Pulsar 180 or 135.
As you said, You felt 125 CCs underpowered, I advice you,not to go for Hunk without a Test ride. I always feel Hunk is underpowered due to its weight. But yes,its the most comfortable and fuel efficient bike of the lot. Why dont you try out P135?? Its a perfect blend of power(more than Hunk) ,efficiency and techs. If you feel, its a bit cramped, then choose the P180. As you already own a Pulsar,it would be a good upgrade and you will find it easier to take cake of it as well.

If among the rest 3, I would suggest you Xtreme,as its upgraded recently and looks fresh. Also Weights less than Hunk.

I would also suggest you hunk if you looking a package deal, you will get everything looks as a big bike feel, FE, decent power, low maintenance dual disc and durable engine from hero...If your requirments goes specifically somewhere then select another product, like if your main requirement is comfort, then go for monoshock.
                        Hope you got my point...

I am planning to book the Hunk tomorrow. But my mechanic said that go for the front disc only as the rear disc will shoot up my maintenance cost. I think he is saying this based on his experience with Pulsar 220 bikes. Do you think he is correct? How much extra maintenance cost am I looking at if I go with a rear disc as compared to non rear disc bike?

Friend I think you should not buy the bike at all!! Because you are listening to something very odd!! a bike with 75K max cost how much would it cost for an entire set of rear Disc brake ?? How much can be the rear disc brake oil cost ?? What would be the brake pads cost ?? Finally after 5-6 yrs or + how much will your rear disc cost ??

If you want a better feature to use then you have to pay.

Lets make one thing clear :

                            1. Do you know why does rear disc brake is better than drum brakes ??
                            2. Why should a person choose disc brakes over drum brakes?
                            3. How much does rear brake fluid cost ?
                            4. How much does your model's rear disc pad would cost ?
                            5. How would you come to know when your disc pads or fluid needs a change/topup ??

Bro it's much better to go to a SVC and ask the above questions, which will help you with better figures and your choices!!
(There will be many who would guide you with the cost and all, but if you do it then it will be helpful and more better then just trusting your mech. Please these figures in SVC only)

Note: Here we do have people who don't change their pads upto 20k kms+!!!

And many who would be changing it in every 4-6K kms

We are here to guide you bro not for mentioning figures...This will make you a listener only, not an activist!!

Get yourself clear with what Disc brake is ? and how will it benefit you and realted expense!!

Then ask us over other stuffs, then we will guide you to which brake oil is better, which pads are good or any options to improve it.

Normally even rear disc brake maintenance are almost same as front ones!! So if you had an old bike with front disc then you add your logic over it, with how much time do you change your liners!

The bit in bold couldn't possibly be true. Why? Allow me to elaborate.

I own P220 which is 46k km old now. In those 46k km, My Rear brake-pads have been replaced twice. Once under warranty (for free) at 14k km and then I paid for replacement pads at 39k km (for the very first time).

These are the brake-pads which came out after roughly 25k km of usage.

So as you can see from this slightly out of focus photo, there is still some life left in the 25k km used brake pads. I only got them changed since I was about to leave for a ~5k km ride and didn't want to leave anything to chance.

The total bill for brake pad replacement from SVC was Rs.260. That comes out to just about 1 paisa/km. For me, due to the warranty claim, it was 0.66 Paise/km. If this isn't Rock bottom maintenance cost, I don't know what is.
