  • Moved to Bangalore Need new Bike. Previously had Pulsar 150

    Hi Everyone,

I recently moved to Bangalore from Chennai I had a pulsar 150 cc for 5 years. I did not bring it to Bangalore since it involved too much hazel just to transfer a bike from state to state . So i decided to buy a new bike and give myself an upgrade. I try to give maximum information about me and my requirement so please forgive if its too long

    Old Bike :

Model: Pulsar 150 (2007 model with LED tail light)
    Bhp: 13.5 bhp
    Torque : 13 nm
Average kmpl : 50 kmpl with Shell normal

    Riding Style:

Driving : I am safe rider but it does not mean I ride slow (I have NCB of 45 % in my insurance)

Handling Capability : I don't Zip Zap in traffic at maddening speed and put others in danger but I like to take advantage of gaps in traffic and move between them. And I love going through bends at 60 kmph (yeah i am slow)

Power delivery: I like to be first when the green light is on. I have a habit of shifting gears around 5000 - 6000 rpm and keep constant power delivery.

Touring : My maximum touring is from chennai to villupuram and back (around 300 kms) . But I like to have touring capabilities in my new bike since Bangalore has lot of short distance touring destinations

Bike Care : I religiously service my bike every 3 months or 3000 km which ever is earlier. I change oil for every service. I replace all faulty components. I don't care if it costs money. I care only about my life and my bike.

Accidents so far : One time I skidded and fell pretty hard while riding at 60 kmph (Stupid TVS Jumbo tires stupid me for trying to save few bucks). A speeding ambassador hit me while standing in signal (nothing serious) and lastly I hit a car which had suddenly braked in front of tidel signal

    Requirements for New Bike

CC, Bhp, Torque : Must be above my Pulsar 150.
Budget : Limited upto 1.5 lakhs.
Mileage : I think 30 kmpl in traffic is Good .
Top speed : Doesn't matter 100 kmph is A-ok for me.
Type : Sports, Naked or cruiser. Commuter a strict no-no.
Comfort : As long as its not crushing my nut every time i brake or making me get down every 30 - 40 mins like my pulsar 150 its superb.
Pillion Rider: Nothing as of yet but might come in future but should be comfortable.
    Build : Must be good.
Maintenance : 1000 to 2000 rs per service is ok
Long term : Yes this is going to be my last bike for a foreseeable future (Unless I won lottery and by a Harley)

I weight 90 kgs and I am about 174 cms. I don't go to gym. So I have slight fear about bikes weighing more than 160 kg.

    Bikes shortlisted :

FZ-s, R15, Fazer, Apache RTR 160, Hero xtreme and Hunk, Unicorn, CBR150R all rejected because the CC still 150 (I am with stupid)

So Pulsar 200 ns, pulsar 220f, Karizma Zmr, Duke, Classic 350, 500, TB and CBR250R all in race.

I will mention the my reservations about each bike.

    CBR250R

+ The Best sports bike sound of 1.5 lakh
    + Power and engine
    + Quality

    - Too costly
    - Waiting period
    - Build quality is inconsistant
    - Maintenance in unknown category

    Classic 350, 500, TB,

+ Its an enfield which means respect, cult following, smile from fellow enfield riders (What else you need )
    - Never rode a Enfield, so a slight fear is there.
    - Weight and gear change
    - Build quality
    - Waiting period

    Duke

+ Best handler in town. Even small gap in traffic is enough.
    + Super bike build quality
    + Unique
+ Eats corners for breaskfast, lunch and dinner
    - Has too much street fighter character
    - Zero pillion comfort
    - Bajaj Service is gamble

    Karizma ZMR

+ Its honda engine with hero comfort.
+ Where you turn there is a hero service center.
    - Old tech (Common 220 cc bike making 17 bhp)
    - Hard to ride in traffic
    - Bulky
    - Poor head light

    Pulsar 220f

+ A proper upgrade to pulsar 150 in same family.
    + Touring capabilities.
    + Head light
    - After headlight, it Looks like same my old pulsar
    - Hard to ride in traffic
    - All pulsar niggles are present
    - Bajaj service is gamble

    Pulsar 200 Ns

+ New tech. Most advanced bike under a lakh
    + Handling
    + Style
    - New Tech, unproven territory
    - Build is all plastic including tank
    - Niggles as with every new bike

I inquired about Pulsar 200ns and 220f. Both are available without any waiting period. Others is don't know.

I believe I have provided maximum information. Please select a bike for me.

Since you are not very much comfortable on your P150, that means P220F and CBR250R are ruled out, since both have riding stance more forward than P150.

what is left are- P200NS, Duke200, RE, ZMR.

now it depends upon you, what you want- ZMR is a tourer, RE is an RE (ruled out), Duke is a street fighter, and P200NS is a do it all bike.

      now its upto you--

      • you want a tourer- go for ZMR
      • you want a streetfighter- go for Duke200
      • you want a jack of all trades, master of none- go for P200NS.

Don't see why you don't like the 220. It'll be a prefect upgrade. Please take a test ride.

          How?

Pls follow the 4th & 3rd link under my signature, that should give you a very very clear picture. If you go through all of them, it might help you get to know most about CBR 250R

Did you give a thought about CBR 150R? 4 valve, bucket type valves that is lot more smoother (FYI, bucket type valves are used in bikes like R1, 1000R etc). Gives you ultra smooth engine, high rev without compromising torque & not to mention more power per stroke without compromising FE. Do not ignore R15 & CBR 150R just because they're 150cc, they're closest when it comes to meet your requirements.

From your post & realist requirement, pls add the following points & see if you can narrow down to a specific bike from what you've shortlisted...
          - Distance between the service center to your house
          - If ASC is confined to all the areas that you might visit; for instance, if you ride for long between point A & B, ensure ASC is available at both A & B
          - Preferably long service intervals so that you don't need to live without the bike for quite long

Last but not the least, service is going to be pathetic if it's Honda, Yamaha, Bajaj, Ducati or even BMW; because this country is yet to mature towards customer centric, so until then, things have to be tolerated

PS - Excellent post; too good to see this kind of analysis that has gone these days; whatever you buy, good luck & ride safe. Welcome to xBhp

If you are into a city where traffic is there when you would ride your bike or on your way then you should Strictly go for DUKE.
If there is no traffic in your way where you would be using it daily then NS200.

Duke's pillion comfort can be compromised as your pillion priority is least. But a superb bike to be in city with excellent handling/braking/performance.

NS200 is same as any high rpm machine, in traffic you will slug and many gearshifts!!

            Now you decide!!

Budget of 1.35L ? Unless yours is a flexible budget, strike off CBR 250R (1.6+ OTR) and Duke 200 (1.5 OTR) because of Bangalore prices.

Only bikes inside your budget are Pulsar 220F @ ~96k OTR (which I think is getting too old to be relevant today), Pulsar 200NS @ 101k OTR (just give it a test ride you; you may like it), Karizma ZMR @ 117k OTR (again worth a test ride).

Or you could wait a bit and see if Bajaj pulls off the launch of the rumored Pulsar 200SS (with either full or half fairing) by Jan.

Another option if you want to tour to nearby places around Bangalore in STYLE (and lots of it) is a Bajaj Avenger. 90k OTR Bangalore. Add the windshield (3k) and 3 boots (one on each side and one behind) which should come to another 2k at most. I don't know if Bajaj also has a floorboard accessory like the one that came with the Yamaha Enticer for the Avenger. Combination of all this you have a bike that'll definitely turn lots of heads wherever you go. May not be so practical, but I believe Avenger is more practical than a Royal Enfield if you maintain it as well.

By researching so much, you are confusing yourself. I consider that you want a bike with good performance-comfort combo, care little about mileage and your way is mixed type- sometimes in traffic and sometimes on highways. If you consider pillion, go and get Apache 180 ABS. Else pick the Pulsar 200 NS. You won't regret.

If bhp is less, it does not mean tech is old!! Yes am speaking about zmr. Its got pgm-fi and the best mileage in 220cc class thanks to all the sensors present which work all the time to ensure you have a safe and a quality ride. You will feel its bulky for the first few days of ownership after which you'll get adjusted. And it makes a great tourer.
Even consider pulsar 220. If maintained well, it could prove to be good.. If still your worries about quality then consider NS.. Highways and city it manages well.. No idea about cbr though..

Thanks. 250R and Duke are included because I can buy one for that price in pre-owned market.

Avenger is an interesting choice. how does it look with all that. Can you post any pictures. My colleague had one and he said he got neck pain due to its weird riding position. Is it true. And how about weight and handling?

Where did you hear about 200SS. If its coming out I am buying one. No other thoughts.

Thanks. I dunno about RTR it does not bring excitement when I see it. When you are buying something for your passion there will always be confusion.

ZMR engine is an very old engine and adding fuel injection strains the engine only more. Nevertheless its an gem of an engine. Its a pity hero could not secure CBR250R engine for ZMR. Imagine ZMR with 250R engine at his price. Perfect.

Thanks for the welcome. I went through your link. Very useful thanks. What i meant was 250R is the costliest of my current choices. But still Honda intentionally sells it at very high premium.

One of my colleague had 250R and it developed piston problem in first month. Similar stories you can find all over web. For the money they charge Honda should atleast provide Duke like quality.

I am afraid that if i test drove 150R I might end up buying it (crazy me...) The thing is I decided to go above 150CC and dont want to look back.

I currently live in marathahalli. I dont know much about bangalore to decide service center.

Can some one give me service centers of Bajaj, Hero and Honda near Marathahalli. Thanks all.

Avenger and neck pain, it's something heard for the first time! But it's a great tourer bike, but surely not for rural roads!!

If you think over touring and bes thandling then NS200 is way better than the rest in the lot.

Again a dream brother!! If you can then go for CBR 250 it's one of the amazing machines.

I see CBR 250 more on roads than Duke, this gives your answer !! There were some stories but this is not the future, now CBR 250 comes with better engine and most of the niggles are sorted out.

                          Senthil,

                          HERO:
It is my understanding that Hero in Bangalore is slowly fading away. There was a time when Bangalore had a lot of Hero dealerships and service centres. Not anymore.
The closest service centre would be Millennium Motors on Inner ring road (DOMLUR) near Embassy Golf Links.

                          TVS:
There is a TVS showroom right opposite Millennium Motors on Inner Ring Road if you are looking at 180 RTR.

                          HONDA:
Lots in the city: more so than Hero or Yamaha. I know of none in Marthahalli. You may try Ananda Honda near Silk Board (take 500 from Marthahalli) or Haiku Honda near Domlur (333 from Marthahalli).

                          BAJAJ:
Amba Bajaj has a showroom cum service centre on outer ring road. It is located after RMZ Ecospace as you go from Marthahalli junction towards Sarjapur Road.

                          YAMAHA:
Pacer motors has a dealership + service centre 2 KMs on Outer Ring Road on way from Marthahalli junction towards KR puram railway station. Route 500 towards KR puram would take you there.

                          ROYAL ENFIELD:
TEKNIK MOTORS has a dealership + SC on Sarjapur Outer Ring Road. Again, take 500 towards Silk Board and get down at IBLUR army camp. AMBA BAJAJ is on the way.

                          KTM:
Located in Indira Nagar. When you go to the HERO dealership (Millennium Motors) or the HAIKU HONDA dealership at DOMLUR, take a rickshaw and go to this place.

                          Good luck.

P.S: I would buy a Karishma ZMR if I were you.

Thanks For this very detailed info. Every showroom is atleast 2 to3 kms from where I stay. I have to start checking one by one. I have no idea of checking out Hero, yamaha or TVS but thanks anyway.

P.S: I would buy a Karishma ZMR if I were you.
Why would you recommend a company that's fading away

MODS: Could you please make this info some where so that it can used for all.
