  • Help me decide on 125cc bike

I've recently sold of my 10 year old splendor and looking for a replacement in 125cc segment. Please help me choose a bike which closely fits requirements are as below:

    1. Budget. Max upto 65k on road.
    2. Comfort: I used to get back pain if I rode my splendor too much, so this time I have a priority for it. The ride is mostly going to be in city only though, don't plan on taking it to highways.
    3. Reliability: I would be keeping the bike for atleast next 6-8 years. Daily running is expected to be about 40-50 KM.
    4. Low maintenance:I don't have much time which I would be able to give to the bike, other than the occasional servicing at its defined intervals.
    5. Mileage: Expecting to get 55+ kmpl

Bikes which i'm looking to compare are Yamaha SS125, Suzuki Slingshot plus, TVS phoenix, Honda Shine, Hero Glamour, Bajaj Pulsar 135LS/Discover.

I was leaning towards SS125 initially seeing its overwhelmingly positive reviews, but open chain design is keeping me away from it which will require regular greasing, etc ?

What you guys think? Which of these fit my requirement most closely ?

First of all , Welcome to xBHP

Regarding your query , I would suggest to take a look in hero ignitor

Looks may be subjective , But rest assured is hero engine and network

another bike is Honda Stunner , Rock solid bike and Honda`s smoothness

Try to test drive each bike and decide for yourself as self satisfaction is most important

Hello, I have been using Yamaha Gladiator RS since past 2009. I haven't felt any problem with the open chain and regular greasing of the chain is not at all required when ever you feel the chain is dry you can apply grease.

If you want me to say about the bike its simply superb machine in 125cc category and its been engineered very well each and every component. The bike can top 120kmph in 5th gear if you red-line it in each gear. In 1st gear it can do 30kmph ( at red-line i don't suggest to red-line it in 1st gear then 2nd gear can do easily 50kmph at 8k rpm and it can do 60kmph at 10k rpm and 3rd it can easily do 85kmph @ 10k rpm and in 4th 100kmph and in 5th gear 120kmph ... I could only do 110kmph on this bike so far.

Best thing about the bike is its cornering capability, i usually take corners on this bike @ 95kmph too and if there is any hair pin bend then it can do in 60kmph . Bike is very easy to bend in corners especially with your knee out and its lil hard to touch down your knee on this bike as it has got some high ground clearance.

Speaking about the mileage it gives 45kmpl in city if you ride it under 6k rpm and in highways if you are riding it under 6k rpm it will give 55+. I never ride it below 8k rpm so i get 40kmpl in city .

This is my review so far about the bike.

I say kick Slingshot and Glamour out of the list, unless it is PGM-Fi which is above your budget.
Reasons:1.AFAIK Suzuki is stopped advertising slingshot, i think they are going to focus on Hayate and slowly withdraw slingshot from market, more over after the introduction of Hayate, Slingshot appears as a total confusing product, having mileage similar Hayate but no additional power.
2.Glamour=Rough gearshift, vibration, feels like it has less power than slingshot, But if it is PGM-fi, its an entirely different story.

You can go for SS125 blindly. I'm using it for more than 2 months now and recommend it. After it clocks 1.5K, the engine becomes very smooth and simply a joy to ride. I've attained a max of 96 kmph with pillion and at that speed, it didn't give even slightest vibration. FE is around 55 till date(75% city). And yes, the shock absorbers are awesome and much better than it's over-hyped rivals(you know the bikes I'm referring to).
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

You might be the first costumer of Discover 100T. Its 100 cc but acts like 125 cc in performance. Mileage would be close to splendor on 'splendor mode' ride on this bike. Mileage would be better than any 125 cc in any mode.

                Search more about the bike.

I can spend a little extra on newer technology. In fact, I was interested in fuel injected bike but I didn't find any significant advantages over carb versions expect for FE (which is not much higher also) in my research. And most people claim that Glamour FI version feels under powered compared to rest of 125cc segment.

I'm thinking of checking out TVS phoenix this weekend. Yamaha SS125 might be good bike, but somehow I'm not sure of its future. The Yamaha showroom in Ghaziabad which I visited didn't had it on display and the salesguy was just trying to push SZ-R saying SS125 is old and about to be retired. Better buy a 150cc bike as it only costs 4k more. Spares might be a problem if I thinking of keeping this bike for next 6-8 yrs ?

For the price of a Glamour FI, you can get:
                    Pulsar 135LS (5k less)
                    Discover 125ST (8k less)
                    Hero Achiever (3k less)
                    Yamaha SZ-R (6k less)

All of these are substantially more powerful (30-50% more) than the Glamour.

IMO, if you want to keep the bike for 6-8 yrs, it should be a bike you actually like today, not a compromise based on what will last 8 years. Because there is a bigger chance of you getting bored of the meagre performance much before any of the modern bikes gives up. With proper maintenance, I don't see why any of the bikes I listed here shouldn't last the test of time.

And anyways, if you are not interested in the extra power, why look beyond the Honda Dream Yuga or the Discover 100T?
