  • My first bike.

    Hi Guys,

I'm going to buy my first bike and am pretty confused with the choices available in the market.

I live in hyderabad and I travel around 20-25 km a day. My main use bike is for commuting to office and also go out occasionally on weekends. I'm looking for a stable and comfortable bike, but also fun to ride and good biking experience. Fuel efficiency is on agenda but not very high and would like to go for 150cc bikes.

I shortlisted Unicorn and FZ-16 but am confused which one to go. I know FZ-16 looks great, but please keep the looks aside when suggesting.

My basic use is commuting but also want fun riding. Afterall just a boring bike is not much fun.

Could you please suggest some good bike for me and also pros and cons.

    Thanks guys.

The FZ will be a very clever choice for you...it has a nice engine, typical Yamaha reliability, nice looks and all that
you seek...even the riding position is quite comfortable.
The other alternative that you can look into is the RTR Fi. Loads of fun, highly agile, track scorcher, amazing brakes and engine. Its reliable and most importantly, the TVS service, especially down south is cool.

The Unicorn may appeal to you and make no mistake, its a swell good machine...butter smooth Honda engine; all Honda engines are sewing machines...they never miss a beat. But its perfection is perceived as a boring character.
You can take a test ride of the Stunner(just to try it out). It looks good and is a fine machine too.
Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and then beat you with experience.

I have doubts about apache since i would be using my bike mostly in the heavy traffic conditions of hyderabad. So need a bike well suited for city traffic. But also want to have some fun during weekends.
Are there any problems faced in FZ? I'm looking to use my bike for another 3-4 years and hence need a bike that wont call for more maintenance in the long run.
Does anybody know service levels rendered for various bikes in hyderabad?

RTR Fi is very much flickable and it is a good machine in traffic .. even better than Unicorn which can give you some headache because of sear weight.
FZ as such has no problem .. a very good bike .. but if you want somewhat good mileage then it lacks behind both RTR and Unicorn. If weight is not an issue, I would suggest you to test ride Suzuki GS150R.

Now keeping the looks aside, there is very little to differentiate between the Fz and Unicorn. Both have got wonderful engine(never mind the punny exhaust notes) .But the major advantage Fz has over the unicorn is that its centre of gravity is lower and situated nearer to the centre. So, even though it is not substantially lighter than unicorn, it "feels" light while flicking in city traffic, and round the corners. But the Fz is bound to give less average than Unicorn.

My vote goes to the Fz.

If only these two bikes are in question i will suggest you to go for FZ 16, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Unicorn but one cant deny the fact that despite of numerous so called upgrade this baby is long in tooth now.
On the other hand FZ is far more contemptory bike, and it might not feel out of date even if you use it for coming 3-4 years which would not be the case with Uni.

Thanks everyone for ur valuable inputs. everyone's points well taken. I was not considering apache but probably may relook at it. But it scores less compared to unicorn and fz on city commuting.

I wanted to keep looks aside because I'm afraid many are simply too biased to fz based on looks. I like its looks but don't want to give too much importance to it.

If G150 is heavy, I'm not inclined to go for it since its my first bike and am not an expert biker. Considering road stability, power, gears looks like fz scores over unicorn.

I agree with Niranjan Vaidya that the perfection in Unicorn makes it little boring and Bandhav's fact that its been on indian roads far too long.

Thanks guys for giving some finer points of difference between the bikes. less fuel effiiciency of fz is a point but that does not concern me much as its compensated by better road grip in city.

^^for a first bike teh fz is very good s it has a little more torque to hlp you out initially particularly in teh city.. moreover your first bike should shud be bought with your heart not your head and all the bikes u are considering have their own merits and demerits so you cant go wrong with any of them..
go check them out and buy what hugs at your heart the most and u will be happy with it in spite of its imperfections..

                      Dude,
have you taken a ride on FZ?? I have. Trust me it is very flickable & has good low end power. Good for City Traffic Bro. Good for long rides too , coz depends upon the rider actually

                        Hey Gautam,

If you've got enough dosh to splurge on an FZ, close your eyes and go for the Apache RTR160FI. This bike is fun man, real fun. Picture this, traffic light gps, awesome flickability and some corner scraping, all within the confines of your own city makes for a load of fun, doesn't it. You could also take off on weekends and explore the hills around. You will love this motorcycle on the twisties. Trust me, you'll get tired of mileage riding very soon. The fuel prices are going southward, so make the most till the dinosaur remains remain.

Coming to the FZ, it is a chick magnet and a very capable handler, but it just doesn't have that power. For me, it is a disappointment on the power front. Yamahas are about going hard and fast. Picture the RDs and RXs and the R15s. Get the drift? This motorcycle deserves a 250 cc engine to complement it's brute bike looks. Coming to current times, an Apache will eat an FZ for breakfast, lunch and dinner on the performance front. So, why spend the same just for some posing value and lesser fuel efficiency.

The Unicorn: fill it, shut it, forget it. If you want this, go for it with your eyes closed. Peace of mind on two wheels. That, is the extremely competent and refined Honda Unicorn for you. SO, IMHO, get the Apache if you want fun on the streets and on the twisties heading out of town, the FZ if you want a chick magnet for posing at the neighborhood hangout and the Uni of you want to "fill it-shut it-forget it". The Uni is a very competent tourer too, a-la-mini Zma.
