  • Help needed 'not' what but 'from where'

Hi guys, I'm back with a query. I'd asked it a few months back, the question on which bike I should buy. What I didn't have back then was the required budget, and most importantly closure. That's why I couldn't decide.
Now, I still don't have a huge budget, but yes, I have gotten over it, and am ready for it finally. And it's going to be Pulsar 220 this time.

Now the dilemma is, from where should I buy it? considering the fact I only have around 70k to spend. (OTR price- Rs 95,000)
    That leaves me 2 options
a)Finance option- I'd have to get a loan for around 30k, and I might end up paying around 5-10k extra, depending on the interest rate, time period etc.
b)Second hand bike- Now I live in Delhi, so there's this huge market for second hand bikes in Karol Bagh. I went there last weekend, and I got a quote for July'2013 make Pulsar 220(condition looks good) for 71k.

And yes,if the situation gets dire, there's a slightly rare possibility of a 3rd option that I'll have to go for a lower model, say P150,180 , either original or second hand.(last resort though)

The thing I would like you to share, comment ,advice is how risky/reliable is it to buy a second hand bike from such a place. Because if it turns out good, I end up saving 20-25k on a 'not-so-old-with-few-scratches' bike, which I would have had to buy it NEW for more than it's OTR price(because of financing).

Another thing, and it's pretty important is how is the paper work done? I dont mind paying a few extra rs for the paperwork, because I really dont want any trouble with it. Now I believe that a regular second hand bike seller in Karol Bagh won't scam me with the paperwork, because his showroom is always going to be there..hence, there's no running

I would love to hear from you guys as soon as possible, and I want to thank you in advance too... I so want to hop on a bike and keep riding for miles...its been months!!

Purchasing second hand bikes will save some money but there is always a unknown factor about the bike's history. Better stick with new one, if you can spend some time on getting a finance for that 30k, I would suggest you to go for your p220 brand new. If you don't then go with a new p180. Cheers.

I'd not really go with the used bike option.
Before you get me wrong, let me explain that there is nothing wrong in buying a used bike - as long as it's a commuter/no-nonsense bike like a Splendor or a Discover which can be had for a very low budget of around 25k. Or maybe, if you are looking for an "intermediate" bike which you intend to sell off after a year or two, then a used bike makes sense. However, it's true that many of people here have bought used bikes, even CBR250s and are happy with it. So, the option is really open for you to consider.

However, I am guessing that you are looking at a performance bike, which you'd love to keep for a long term. In such a case, I'd advice to stay away from used bikes.

For a performance bike, you'd never know how the previous owner used it through the run-in period, how he serviced it, did he have any minor crashes (or maybe rode over some real bad potholes, enough to deform the forks or alloys slightly, but not big enough to inflict any other visible signs of damage)

So I'd suggest you to put down those few bucks extra for the Finance and get a new bike which will be your own right from the first kilometer.

        Happy riding!

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

Do yourself a favour and dont buy from karol bagh.
Look, the fact is that the dealers do a lot of wrong stuff with their bikes, like turning back the odo, replacing original with fake stuff etc etc.

Buy a used bike, but hunt for them from OLX.in and not from a dealer.

DO NOT BUY FROM DEALERS ,ESPECIALLY FROM KAROL BAGH IF YOU DONT HAVE ANY RELATIONS ,you will regret your whole life.
Try to buy from a guy or a guy who knows a guy, that you can trust.

Well, second hand is not always recommended, but still if you insist, Rather than buying from Dealers who sell second had bikes, why not but it from a Owner directly.
Go to OLX, and search for people selling second hand 220s.
                  Ask them questions :
                  • What engine oil have they used, especially the grade. If its anything other than 20w50/15w50, or if the Guy pro-ly says "I used Castrol" : forget it, and go for the next person selling a bike.
                  • How frequently has the bike been serviced, what time intervals has he changed the engine oil.
                  • Where do you usually service the bike, personal mechaninc/Bajaj service centre.
                  • The parts that have been replaced, Clutch plates/Cables/Sprocket etc..
                  • Accidents
                  • Also, if possible have the bike checked ny a local mechanic.

All these can be done, if you contact the owner directly rather than getting it from a Dealer and you can come to a conclusion. You might have to spend some good amount of time, searching for the "Right Bike from the Right Owner".

So just because a guy doesnt know engine oil, you walk away???
There do exist people like me, who would pass it on to the trusted mechanic if anything goes wrong and cant be arsed about what engine oil is used, as long the bike is smooth to ride.

And personally IMO, non-petrolheads have better bikes, because they aren't thrashed as much as we petrolheads thrash our bikes.

Dont insist on knowing the engine oil thats in the bike, just insist on full service history.

Thank you all for your replies. I do understand the risks of buying and owning used bikes. Me and my friend went to Karol Bagh today(I had posted the thread day before yesterday, so I was hoping to get some pointers yesterday or by today morning maximum, but alas, it couldn't get approved). My friend knows a dealer there who owns an accessories shop too, so he does his P220 stuff from him. So yes, its that "I know a guy, who knows a guy, who knows a guy" concept He showed me a 2008 P220, run 11000 km and in a pretty good condition. I called a mechanic who lives near by my place, whom I know to come and verify, check the bike and he pretty much approved it. Price is 45000(including 2000 for paper work through 'dalals')

So, I told him I'll let him know my decision in a couple days, I asked my parents, they dont know much about this stuff, but I'm pretty sure they aren't alarmed with the price quote, since it lies within the Insurance amount I got.

So here is all that has happened meanwhile this thread got approved(I'm sorry, I'm just a little disappointed, I'm not blaming anyone or the system). Please advice how I should move along from here, and/if the price quoted is ok-ish. The bike condition looks in pristine condition, 11k in 5 years so hardly driven, right? IMO

Why didnt you just continue the old thread???
Would've saved you time. Still, why dont you look at olx.in

About the quote, I have no idea about used bike prices, so I will let someone answer that.
