  • Hyosung GT250R or Honda CBR250R

Guys, earlier i was planning to buy a CBR250, for obvious reasons, but have now recently took a test ride of GT250 and was completely blown away by it.

i love its looks, its riding posture, exhaust note, linear fuel delivery, the way it handles, smooth revving engine, big bike feel etc.

i am completely aware about its weakness, like weak brakes, difficult to ride in city and poor fit and finish etc....

i will be using it for going to office daily which is around 160 kms round trip daily (80+80) and i am completely OK with riding stance.

you can refer the ongoing discussion here --->>

now my main question is -- how reliable is the bike, and how competent are the service centers, what is the condition on spare parts availability. etc as reliability is a factor for me.

all Hyosung owners, senior members, moderators & those who have tested it plz contribute.

    Query Approved

    Congrats sir in advance

I think the only thing you need to worry about is After Sales Service.

You ride 160 kms a day
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

        .
Really? You lucky buddy I envy you I ride only 40kms daily . I cant comment on GT250 . cbr250 is awesome to ride .
I read in the other thread your wife will accompany occasionally you then there is no chance you can go for gt250 unless you have any other standby bike for only family rides (like what I am planing ).

          Love your spirit prince! Kudos.

Now, I'm not an owner, never rode it (a Hyosung) even once. But I can guarantee you something on what I've seen. I have ridden with nagoo and sam here in BLR. Nagoo has at 2012 GT 250 and sam has a 2005 comet. The 2005 comet is as good as any 2005 bike should be. It has aged well. These are reliable Suzuki engines.

Now, after sales may not be as good as other bikes out there, in BLR its particularly not good, but you do get parts/spares on order.
Braking not good? Who said that? I'll quote nagoo here. "Though not as sharp as a ninja, but GT's brakes are 5 times better than R15's". That's enough on brakes, no?

If you follow the mind, it HAS to be CBR, but still that sadness would be there deep within.

          Think over it.

            Why don't you consider Ninja 650 r?
Far more powerful, torqey,a better tourer too.
Or is that too much out of budget?

              Hi Prince,

If I am not wrong you have been waiting to get a new bike for yourself for quite some time and seems like finally the D-day is approaching and approaching faster.
May you get a better mile munching machine which would accompany you for many years ahead without any issues.
I am not the right person to suggest anything as I have not ridden any of the bikes you are contemplating to invest in.
However, if I may, no money to be paid for free advice, go with a dispassionate mind and make a choice. If I were you with 2 to 3 lakh rupees in hand, I would add up another 1 lakh and go for Ninja 300...once and for all till I get another 5 lakh rupees for a better bike
Good luck and all the best

Ideally i would suggest you the GT250, but why dont you add one more lakh and get the N300 itself? It has all the things the GT250 has (big bike feeling, handling, power)... and its also very reliable and comparatively high quality with better braking abilities... ( Ninjas are known for their reliability right? )... or like someone suggested you might consider the N650 also...
And also, we cant really say when Hyosung will close their shop in India, where as Ninja is here to stay, considering the kind of success it enjoys and the close relationship Kawa is having with bajaj....

But the Hyosung again has some strong plus points...
There are quite a lot of old comets running, engines must be reliable...
I heard that their service is reliable...
100% insurance covered... Low maintenance cost, N300 is going to burn a huuuge hole in your pocket...

Dude!! I see that you have just upped the budget to include the bigger Duke too. Ask yourself, do you really NEED the fairing or will the 17 *extra* horses be more desirable instead??

                  Sorry

160 Km everyday huh? Are you serious? Anyway...

                    N300R - 160 Km/25 Kmpl = 6.4 liter = Rs Rs 454.4 a day X 5 days = Rs 2272 a week X 4 weeks = Rs 9088 a month X 12 months = Rs 109056 a year

                    GT250 - 160 Km/27 Kmpl = 5.9 liter = Rs 418.9 a day X 5 days = 2094.5 a week X 4 weeks = Rs 8378 a month X 12 months = Rs 100536 a year

                    C250R - 160 Km/32 Kmpl = 5 liter = Rs 355 a day X 5 days = Rs 1775 a week X 4 weeks = Rs 7100 a month X 12 months = Rs 85200 a year

                    Ownership cost based only on FE between N300R & C250R a month = Rs 9088 - Rs 7100 = Rs 1988 a month X 12 months = Rs 23856

                    Ownership cost based only on FE between GT250R & C250R a month = Rs 8378 - Rs 7100 = Rs 1278 a month X 12 months = Rs 15336

This also means, the bare minimum of ODO clicks a month is about 3200 Km; this means the vehicle has to be serviced every two months (assuming N300R & GT250R also has 6000 Km service interval)

This is excluding the cost of spares & consumables such as engine oil, oil filter, air filter, clutch for the first few months

My basic question to you will be...do you think it's worth enough to buy such a motorcycle for a 160 Km ride everyday? Wouldn't it be economical to move your home closer to work place even if it means any of you have to switch to another job?

yes, that is my only worry, sadly except nagoo, it seems no other Hyosung member is active here...

i took a 1 hour long solo test ride on monday and again on saturday i took one more one hour long test ride with wife.

"max007" you are right, my wife had difficulty with the bike, first of all the rear seat is too high, she needs a ladder to climb onto rear seat, jokes apart ... she placed her feet on riders footpeg first and then climbed to rear seat, the pillion can not even place her foot on pillion's footpeg to climb onto seat coz the pillion footpeg is also too high. that said once seated things were quite ok ... but not for long ... as i started, the sudden jolts of accelaration and braking kept her swinging front and back, after 5-10 mins i stopped by the side of road, asked her to wrap her hands around me and place her palms on the fuel tank for support, now she was not moving back and forth, but this position means she is also bend forward like the rider, and she is not used to it, after 5 mins she said, enough -- "i am gonna sit straight only".

after the test ride was over, she said- you can have this bike if you like, but remember- "rossi does doesn't ride with his wife as pillion and surely he don't tour on his M1"

one more thing she noticed, which i couldn't was that, the grab rails are not made of metal, now i can't verify this, coz she told me after we went home. i was not in agreement but she said she also checked by knocking a metal object to grab rails. Hyosung owners can verify.

i was a bit doubtful about after sales service and spares, so i visited the service center, and everything seemed ok, there were 6-7 bikes parked in service center, though they had only one service bay, but that should be sufficient for the number of bikes they are selling.

also 6-7 bikes at service center means they are definitely selling sufficient number of bikes, just that these owners are not members on xBhp.

Servicing and spares doubt is put to rest.

now the brakes.... they are good and does the job, not as good as that of ninja, lacks feedback.

one more thing is found out is that if stuck in traffic jam or traffic moving at snails pace for too long, the bike heats up like hell, and i mean it...absolute hell. the bike heated up so much even my wife can feel the heat underneath her seat, only god knows how i was riding it, you can actually make an omlette on the chasis very easily, i thought my jeans would soon start to burn....so as soon as you come to a halt in traffic, switch off the bike, but that means too much on-off.

can existing GT250R owners confirm, the oil cooler does not have a fan.... right..???

one more thing, the bike was running low on fuel (you know test ride bike) with last bar continuously blinking, when i switched off the bike at traffic signal bu engine kill switch, FI warning red light came on and stayed on, and this happened every time i switched it off and will disappear as soon i start the bike. the dealer had no answer why it happens like this. existing GT250 owners, plz confirm.

also it was impossible to slot the test ride bike into neutral, may be it was a test ride bike.

one more thing i noticed is gear lever movement for changing gears is too much, i mean a small push of pedal is not sufficient, you have to push it approx. twice the distance or angle as that required on a pulsar.

one more negative thing i noticed is pathetic headlights, absolutely useless, i don't know, may be because i am used to HID on my bike. if i get this bike, something must be done for headlights.

ok, those suggesting a N300 or N650, these are above my budget, and i will not increase my budget.

"Anant ji" i never liked Duke, so 200 or 390, i don't like it. i want a sportsbike, i am actually fed up with the commuter/streetfighter riding stance. although it hurts to know that a bike probably costing less than GT250 will be faster. no nakeds, no streetfighters. period.

"aargee" thanks for that numerical comparison of running costs, yes CBR250 has a service interval of 6000 kms, but i dont think you guys service it at 6000 kms, do you...?? i think most of the guys do it at 4500 kms.. coz of engine oil ...

GT250R has a service interval of 4000 kms....only... so that means servicing every 40 days...

                      GT250 won't give 30KMPL on highway .... ??

regarding job switching or moving my residence closer to work... yes .. i am working on it......just that my bike is getting old and i have to anyhow change it .. if not now, then may be next six months.... but its anyway due.

so this is what i feel after 2 test rides lasting around one hour each. the showroom guys are very co-operative, the showroom closes at 7 PM and for me they waited till 8 PM... i appreciated their effort.

guys how to upgrade the lights of GT250... i mean they are projector, so if i put HID, i will loose the ability to flash... any solutions....

tell me guys, is it ok to go for GT250 or CBR is still better.

                      any issues in rains...??

You want a sports bike, GT250 is the only one that can quench your thirst in that price bracket... Go for it!
One more thing to worry about now is that DSK is selling 2012 version of GT250, did you ask them when the 2013 version is going to be released?

^^ yes, i asked them, but they had no clue about 2013 GT250R.

                            GT250 - 160 Km/27 Kmpl = 5.9 liter = Rs 418.9 a day X 5 days = 2094.5 a week X 4 weeks = Rs 8378 a month X 12 months = Rs 100536 a year

Wouldn't it be economical to move your home closer to work place even if it means any of you have to switch to another job?

yes, that is my only worry, sadly except nagoo, it seems no other Hyosung member is active here...
took a 1 hour long solo test ride on monday and again on saturday i took one more one hour long test ride with wife.

regarding job switching or moving my residence closer to work... yes .. i am working on it......just that my bike is getting old and i have to anyhow change it .. if not now, then may be next six months.... but its anyway due.

guys how to upgrade the lights of GT250... i mean they are projector, so if i put HID, i will loose the ability to flash... any solutions....

tell me guys, is it ok to go for GT250 or CBR is still better.

                            any issues in rains...??
@Prince .... mark my words .. if your doing daily 80km .. then CBR is the best choice interms of comfort and economy. or you can still wait a bit and check upcoming 250 releases or even 390. do consider P390, D390 and ofcourse for your riding style and requirements Mojo300 suits best and i have confirmed news of it launching before diwali.

now to clear your doubts :
grabrail is plastic costed on metal
bike heats up surely on snail traffic .. its the gift of big bikes .. even Ninja also heats up ..but liquid cooling in Ninja ofsets lot of heat than oil cooled GTR [remember both are twin engine]
FI stays on [red light ] in nutral its programmed that way , only goes off once put in to gear
In BLR city im getting constant 27-30kmpl ..highway i got 33kmpl [riding around 90-120kmph ]
Headlights ok for me, you can upgrade it.

bottom line : - with your current requiremts of commuting 80km daily and considering all other req CBR suits best. but if you change your home closer to office or in other words daily commute less than 50km and if you can maintain your fitness level and hit gym GTR is welcomed , and also you can remove stock foam from seat and get some soft foam for seats
                            Nothing is Impossible ...

^^ not interested in mojo and D200/390. P390 is still some time away.

GT250R does not have a fan for radiator... plz answer, if this is right..??

also it does not have a sensor for engine heat....??

and the FI system is open loop.. right...??

i need to check headlamps once again.

and i am not going to commute this way forever, six months or one year maximum. thats it. so i think i can manage a GT250R without much difficulty.
