  • Continental GT or Bullet 500?

    Hi guys,

This wold be my second post on this forum ( first was saying hi to all).

So I am in complete dilemma for the past six months as to which buy should I own.

I already had a fair share of 'plastic bikes' so decided to go with legendary royal enfield. Most specifically all new Continental GT.

honestly speaking, I am a little skeptical about buying this bike . I had my fair share of plastic bikes experience so wanted to buy a good "metal" bike. So I walked into enfield's showroom to buy bullet 500 but at the time of booking I laid my eyes on GT535 and I was like WOW! Like that's something you don't get to see everyday. Took a test drive.. Still under its spell but I have my concerns. Since you guys obviously know better than me can you please enlighten me on:

    1) the wrist and shoulder pain that I got from 10 min ride. I kept my thighs and arms parallel plus gripped fuel tank with thighs as well

    2) to what extent is the plastic used on this machine?

    3) can I used this bike for touring 200kms at a stretch?

    4) can I increase the exhaust sound.. The bike I test drove used the aftermarket silencer..still not satisfied with it

    5) lastly, do any of you guys regret owning it? Since bullet 500 and mighty duke390 is the same price bracket.

I would use this bike for weekends and would go on trips and tours. I don't mind spending 2L on GT. I have this feeling that complete fleet of RE would be revamped by 2017 ( also read it somewhere).

I have missed the 3 delivery date due to this dilemma only. Now I have the deadline from parents either buy it in July or don't buy at all. Need your help... SOS!

The question is, can you do it? It has a sportier stance than most other plastic/metal commuters.

Re: Continental GT or Bullet 500?

Firstly each bike has it's own purpose, so don't be looking down on commute bikes since they're made for practical utility purposes.

Now to answer to your many questions:

            1) the wrist and shoulder pain that I got from 10 min ride. I kept my thighs and arms parallel plus gripped fuel tank with thighs as well

            - If you're used to sitting straight then yes the GT position will feel worked. But then that's how the position of these bikes are. Its probably a little more aggressive than pulsars but nothing like the R15 or other supersports. If you don't enjoy that then it's best to go for some other bike.

            2) to what extent is the plastic used on this machine?

            - I don't get this question? What exactly you intend to know?

            3) can I used this bike for touring 200kms at a stretch?

            - Any bike can be used to touring. And as far as this is concerned you've read the iron-butt ride already. I too have done a 150kms ride on my GT & it was absolutely fine. I also intend to ride mine till Jaipur.

            4) can I increase the exhaust sound.. The bike I test drove used the aftermarket silencer..still not satisfied with it

            - honestly this is exactly why people hate RE owners. Just loud noise making bikes which only does nothing more than announcing their presence. I personally don't like it at all. The stock sound is quite pleasurable but if you intend to irritate everyone around you then surely you can add a big open pipe & you'll have you sound.

            5) lastly, do any of you guys regret owning it? Since bullet 500 and mighty duke390 is the same price bracket.

            - I regret owning my bike only when I pass thru Benelli showroom Coz I really was waiting for that bike to launch and compare it with my choice of GT. But in any case I really love my bike. I love the fact that even in the biggest of malls where there are 100s of bikes mine is the one which stands out.
I do known a guy who does regret owning it coz he was not able to compete with KTM guys in traffic or highway, he was also not liking the fact that he can't easily customize with off the shelf parts like KTM or Ninja or Z250. Basically he fell for the looks of the bike rather than truly understanding what this bike is about.

See to be honest this bike is not for everyone, yes everyone will love the looks but you really need to be a retro-nerd to be owning this bike. according to me anyone who doesn't love anything related to 70s or 80s this bike is not for them. Look it's simple... if you still prefer to write with your Fountain pen over ball pen & if you're listening to Pink Floyd & Abba instead of Honey Singh, then maybe this bike is you.

As someone who has owned a Continental GT since Sept 2014, I will pitch in with my inputs to your questions. I have a full ownership thread on another forum if you want an in depth view.

This honestly isnt a problem. You just need to learn to adjust your body position to keep your arms loose.

Given its weight, I would say very little

It can be done. What is important is the speed at which you do it. Higher the speed, the more you increase vibes. Keep it in the sweet spot and you can keep munching miles. Ive done trips of 400, 500 and 600 kms in a day on this bike. Longest single stretch was probably 100 odd kms. The single seat is more comfortable than the one meant for a pillion.

Yes. The company offers an alternate exhaust. Red Rooster Performance also offers one for Rs 8000. Take your pick.

Not in my case. The Continental GT and D390 are priced within 1000 rupees of each other in Bangalore. Both offer very different riding experiences. Different strokes for different folks.

While riding the Continental GT, you need to keep your back arched and your arms loose. I dont know if you have noticed but many R15 riders ride with a straight back and stiff arms. Riding in that position, especially on not too great roads, is going to leave your hands (esp wrists) taking a massive beating. When I owned my R15, I used to often tell other bikers on the roads / office parking etc to loosen their arms and ride. This is the same approach to be used when riding with the Continental GT. You will find excellent posts somewhere in this forum on the same lines.

As for the ownership experience with pictures, you can check the following link - RE Continental GT: Captain signing in! - Team-BHP

With regard to the colour, it is a personal choice. Most Continental GTs sold are in red. Black would give you exclusivity on an already exclusive bike. You cant go wrong with any of the colours.
