  • Hornet or Gixxer

This is kind of my first thread here . I usually dont ask questions like this but I am so confused right now that I had to write this.

I need a bike for my weekend commute very badly and I have shortlisted 2 bikes ie Hornet and Gixxer But the problem is that I am not able to choose between these two Gixxer and Hornet.

    1. Age-24
    2. Height-166 cm
    3. Weight-67
    4. Intended usage -Regular commute to office 3 km per day (Yes I live near my office :P ) and at least 50 km per day on weekends
    5. Fuel Efficiency requirement (approx., if any) - I guess both give around 45 and I am happy with that.
    6. City & Highway percentage usage - City 40% and highway 60%
    7. City / Town /Village of residence- Bangalore

Thing is I like the styling of Hornet and also it makes more amount of power and torque and has tall gearing so it will be easy to drive on the highway. But it is around 7-10k heavier on my pocket ( I am talking about the CBS version , I like rear disk whether it is useful or not ) , has lousy switches and has AC lights .

On the other hand Gixxer is a little less on power , but is good in handling department ,has beefier front forks and has good switches and DC lights. But i guess it will feel a little strained compared to Hornet in high speeds. Also it does not have a rear disk variant till now and I cannot wait till they release the rear disk variant.

I am only able to think this much as of now . I will add more if I come up with something.

    Please help

    Thanks
    Amith

    Query Approved

Besides the points you have mentioned, another important criteria i believe that you should look into is pillion comfort. The pillion seat on the Hornet is apparently considerably comfier than the Gixxer. If you don't plan on lugging a pillion around often, then this becomes irrelevant.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

If you can shell extra for better pillion comfort & rear disk ..........buy Hornet, its is not that Gixxer is bad .

        Thanks for approving

Right now I am planning to ride solo but it will be nice to have a good pillion seat .

I don't mind spending but is it worth the money .( to be frank I like the design of horent more than gixxer )

Also I guess gixxer comes with radial Rear tyres . Any real life advantage of that ?? Hornet doesn't get that it seems

          Re: Hornet or Gixxer

Go with the Hornet, eyes closed. Though Gixxer is good, but not better than Hornet. Honda nailed it with the Hornet 160R.

Power, Braking (CBS version), smoothness, mileage, comfort, reliability = Hornet wins.

          Handling, Fun = Gixxer wins

By the way, why dont you consider the RTR180 ABS?

I recommended to you, because its very safe, it has ABS & almost same price as of Hornet.

Comfort should not be an issue, because you physically weigh 66KG (Leaner side) & 166cm Tall (shorter side) which is perfect for RTR.

          RTR has:
          > Very good pillion seat
          > Reliable design, Quality
          > Easy spare availability
          > SuperB performance, braking & handling
          > Fuel Efficiency = 35-40kmpl
          > Most importantly: Safety Guaranteed with excellent dual disk brakes & Dual Channel ABS

            Hi
I actually took a test ride of RTR but didn't like it. Also the 180 ABS model has a waiting period of 2 months it seems. I cannot wait that long.
Also I am more inclined towards the Japanese bike brands ( please don't ask me why , even I don't know :P)

              Okie Dokie,

In that case, also please take a look at Hero's 2016 Hunk. It too uses Japanese tech & has Double disk brakes, Honda CB150 engine 15.8 BHP. Plus it also has closed chain case for lesser maintenance.

              Hero 2016 Hunk:

              > Powerful engine with 15.8 BHP
              > Reliable & Trusted Honda CB150 motor (used in Xtreme, Unicorn150, Hunk, Achiever, Impulse)
              > Very easy spares, affordable
              > Very wide service/spare part network all over India.
              > Good build quality as always.

Main difference between 2016 Hunk & Hornet:

              1) Hornet has open chain case: marginally more maintenance, Hunk has closed. Winner = Hunk

              2) Hornet has very poor quality switches on handle . Winner = Hunk

              3) Hornet has slightly taller gear ratios, Hunk has slightly shorter. Winner = Hornet (By sprocketing, Hunk can be over-geared with Unicorn sprocket, hence taller gearing)

              4) Hornet (Honda) does not have wide spares/service support. But Hero has a vast, affordable, yet quality spare parts for Hunk all over India. Winner = Hunk

              5) Hornet has fresher redesigned engine along with updated everything. Whereas Hunk still uses old school Unicorn 150 engine base. Winner = Hornet

On performance, Hunk is slightly more aggressive initially. Hornet's behavior is calm/linear always (just like Unicorn 150/160)

Please test drive the 2016 Hunk, if you dont like it,then its HORNET 160R Hands Down I suggest you to buy CBS version. for a better & safe braking experience.

By what means you say you will be strained while travelling at high speeds, It is because of the riding position or wind-blast. If it is wind blast, both are street-nakeds and you will have to tackle with that. No option (unless you want to add an aftermarket windshield, which looks a bit sick on a street fighter IMO).

I cant comment on the riding position about the hornet, But gixxer to me is similar to what you ride on a FZ, big wide handle bars , easy to maneuver inside city traffic.

What I meant was I felt Suzuki is a little short geared compared to Unicron when I took a test drive of both .. Which is great for city but not soo great in highway ... I will be taking highways a little more .

I know gixxer is an awesome bike because when I testrode the bike it was awesome.

                    Re: Hornet or Gixxer

                    Hornet i would say!

                    Pros:
                    Honda Relaibility.
                    Better Looks.
                    Better Seat.
                    Better gearing ratio.
                    Smoothness of Honda Engine.

                    Cons:
                    Pathetic Switch Gear.
AC wiring. (can be solved later though)
                    Ride Safe!

                    Cheers,

I really urge you to consider a geared bicycle, esp if it's casual wear on all weekdays in office.

Here's the thing Honda's are known for their buttery smooth engines I have 5 years old CBR250 it my friend has 1 lakh kilometers run Unicorn they both are in good conditions especially engines wise the electrical are bad to be honest on both of them I mean they seem to be cheap and you might have to change switches sometimes.
I have no experience with Suzuki so can't comment on that.
Best thing you can do is go for test ride that would give you a clear picture of what you like as biker.

That's what I am waiting for ... There is no test ride vehicle for Hornet . I have already testrode the gixxer and its a very good bike .
