  • Please Help Me Make A Wise Decision..

So we decided to sell our old tvs scooty streak which was a real pain since the day we bought it.

The question here is whether to go for a bike (150 cc ) or a gearless scooter

    Usage and background :
city runs ranging from 2 to 15 kms .
Will be Mostly driven by me and my elder brother.
Touring not possible as of now.
I will be entering a new phase of my life i.e the college life very soon.

I really want to go with my heart and buy a bike but my mind says to go with a scooter with which i will miss an opportunity of buying my first bike for almost 5 years to come. [emoji30]

    Query Approved

From a practicality point of view, a scooter is better
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

My time in college I wish I had not gotten that Pulsar and rather had an Activa. It is the most peace of mind, not having to trot around with that drafter and that stupid tube on a bike.

You bag will be under the seat or b/w the legs and no gears would be a carefree life. And will also be useful for the girls that want to occasionally drive it

Though one thing that needs to be consider is the ride height and the wheel width. If you are tall then get something which is taller like a Jupiter

Yamaha Fascino, Honda Dio, Vespa VX ... a few stylish ones
When I'm on the road, I'm indestructible. No one can stop me... but they try.

A scooter best suits your purpose and needs, there is always time later for a bike, don't worry.

What are the advantages of a scooter over bike apart from storage and no gears ?

Well off the top of my head.........

            Scooter Pros
            1) Higher luggage space and under seat storage as opposed to bikes for which you'll need to get tank bags and luggage.
            2) bigger often more comfortable seats (I ride a ktm enough said)
            3) no gears means comfortable and simplified city riding ( I like gears on my bike but sometimes in stop and go traffic its a pain)
            4) wind protection for lower body on cold days. (if you rode a bike you know the pain.)
            5) Flickability in city traffic. (This one is subjective from my standpoint atleast)
6)smoother ride and linear pull (Trust me flipping through gears and getting the gear shift just right is an art and most riders get small jerks when releasing the clutch after shifting and also the pick up is jerky but I like it)

            Scooter Cons
            1) higher maintenance (Trust me unless you're a mechanic or a bike wizard you'll be replacing clutch belts and clutch shoes far too frequently but on a bike parts like gearbox are for life and chains last a lot longer than scooter belts)
            2) Lower mileage due to cvt belt drive transmission (Its a problem but no one acknowledges it with a bike you'll be the boss of the rev range and thus choose your approach to performance and mileage)
            3) Small wheels mean you'll literally feel every speed bump and pot hole on your spine quite intimately ( Though many bikes have that problem too coz of hard suspensions)
            4) lower ground clearance (not a problem on most bikes out there)
            5) Sheer boredom. (I'm a bike guy I like the freedom of choosing my favourite rev range and getting the best performance from my bike. But a long commute on a scooter has no excitement whatsoever. no gears to change, no rev limits no, no rev matching, no throttle blipping. All you'll do is twist the throttle and go.)

These are my opinions only and must not be taken out of context. and even though I am a bike guy I recognize the practicality of a gearless scooter and think it is your best option for a small 2-15km daily commute.

You're welcome bro. Sincerely hope this helped made your choice easier. There is a lot of time to become a biker but practicality is always a priority.

                Cheers

Re: Please Help Me Make A Wise Decision..

This might be OT but i need help in selling my sister's scooty streak..
                        Few questions :

                        1.how much can i expect ?
Considering it's condition and the fact that it was very less used for the last six months (15 km per week) though serviced twice.
First 23k kilometers were done at 40km per day.

                        2.what about paper work ?
I know rc transfer is must but how to ?

3.battery is dead. Should i get it replaced or ask the buyer ?

4.as it was used for only grocery runs i completely forgot about papers and now insurance and puc are expired!

                        Attaching pics for reference

The Scooty looks neat but no rear view mirror?

I don't think anyone will buy an old vehicle without valid insurance. Your Insurance is lapsed and now you may have to take the scooty to the RTO. Carry a copy of the RC and old Insurance certificate. The Insurance guys need to take photographs of the scooty and verify the documents and then will issue new Insurance. Take PUC also which costs just Rs.40 or 50 only?

Battery - check if it can be charged or else buy a new one unless you can sell the vehicle with the old battery.!!

I have the mirrors i just took them out for clicking pictures as the left one was slightly damaged.(you can see the socket it's not rusted like the adjacent screws and bolts !)

How much will it cost for the insurance part ?

Insurance premium depends what IDV of the scooty calculated by the Insurance Officer.

on 16th of this month, I have renewed my insurance for my Wego and the premium amount was Rs.1226 based on IDV Rs.48000.

How old your scooty is ? I think the premium amount should be less than Rs.1000 (you can check with any insurance agent who will calculate and give a number) -all depends on the age of the scooter...!
