  • Need suggestion in buying a new bike

Hi friends! I am planning to buy a new bike and my budget is 1-1.5 lakhs. I have been riding a Yamaha Fazer 125cc 2005 model for the past 6 years and it just crossed 70000 kms last month. It has been giving me a lot of problems lately and I had to frequently visit service centers. So i have to decided to go for a new bike. My purpose(just for 2 yrs as im a banker) as of now is to commute daily a total distance of 30 kms and occasional long rides. I checked all the bikes in the 150-200 cc segment but I couldn't make a decision. I want a bike with good pickup and mileage of 30-35 kmpl. Note: My height is 6'2" and my weight is 71kg.

I am listing the bikes below which I have considered so far along with the reason
    1. Pulsar AS200(mainly due to its bhp n extra gear but worried about rattling issues and quality)
    2. Suzuki Gixxer SF(purely for the fairing)
    3. TVS Apache RTR200 4v(liked everything except the performance at higher speeds)
    4. Pulsar 220f(again purely based on looks but it is outdated and no 6th gear)
    5. Pulsar RS200(only for that top speed but again worried about rattling and quality issues)

I was advised by many to go for Yamaha or Honda bikes as they give good performance in long run. I checked Honda hornet 160 but I hate its design and I have no clue about the Yamaha ones. And a big no to KTMs due to budget.

    Thanks in advance guys.

Do include the R15 v2 and the CBR250R as well in your list.
These would give you the most refined engine as compared to all the bikes listed by you.
You can get pretty good deals on used CBR250R and R15 (if you are open to the idea of buying used bikes)

Strictly sticking to the choices you have suggested, go for AS200.
Will suit your height and Fuel Economy criteria.
Will definitely offer you a good pick up.
Lesser fairing = Lesser chances of rattling (albeit others' opinions on this may vary, I know).
You mentioned daily commute of 30Kms so that may be mostly within city, and the speeds permitted in such situations will hardly make you encounter any engine harshness. Any doubts on this point would get cleared with a thorough test.

My first choice was pulsar AS200 only. But comments from my friend made me to reconsider the decision. I will better do a test ride before making a decision. Thanks for the advice friend.

Theres not much price difference between the 150R and 250R. Hence it makes sense to get the 250R as its a much better bike for both city and touring.
Since you are not much concerned about the mileage, get the 250R eyes closed. Do a TD, I am sure you will love it.

Re: Need suggestion in buying a new bike

Friends! Today I went for a test ride in pulsar rs200,honda hornet 160 and royal Enfield Himalayan.

First was Royal Enfield Himalayan. It was my first experience riding a Royal Enfield motorcycle. I would say this one totally sounded different from the others in the RE lineup. Riding and handling was good.
Snow white version looked way better than the black granite one. It was more of an off-road bike. Waiting period was 90 days.

Next is Pulsar RS200. I wanted to do a TD on AS200 only but later changed my mind to RS200. It was not at all bulkier as I had imagined. I was asked to drive near the showroom itself. The streets were little free only as it was around 3pm. I was riding it at a speed of 50-60s since the distance was very less and also I was busy checking the details. After two nearby bus stops, the showroom guy asked me to take a u-turn and get back to showroom. It was when he told me "Usually racers only will opt for RS200 and you are riding a RS200 like this. You give the bike after the turn and I will show you how to ride a RS200". I acknowledged and gave the bike to him after doing the u-turn. He started racing on the streets and I was struggling to sit at the back. I felt everything around me was in slow motion. He applied brakes several times to tell the importance of ABS. I had serious questions in my mind whether I should really go for 200cc bikes from 125cc riding experiences(your suggestions needed). After returning to the showroom I told the guy who attended me that the bike was good and I was not driving it well. He told me that after 2-3 days,I will be able to drive it well.

Last was Honda hornet 160r Test drive. I know I have said initially that I hate it's design but went just for the Honda brand value. I did TD for some 2-3kms. Being it a 160cc bike, it was easy to ride and there was not much trouble in quick turns and speed breakers. They told me that CBS braking feature is available. I don't know much about that and how it differs from ABS. Only drawback is it is priced slightly higher for a 160cc bike. I enquired about CBR bikes and they told me it will take 1 or 2 months.

I visited TVS showroom to get a glimpse of Apache RTR 200 4v. There were just two bikes for display and even test rides are available only through booking after 20 days. I was told that even sales will happen after 20 days. It is just carburetor version and FI version will take another six months. I just gave my contact details for TD and left the showroom.

I visited Yamaha showroom to have a look at fz and R15 models. I didn't like the Fazer model. Fz-s looked better. Then I saw this R15s and I simply sat on the bike to see the riding position and I felt it was too low for me. I was told that it will be even more lower in version 2. So I didn't bother to do a test ride. I just took the price quote for Fz-s and left the showroom.

I had planned this day exclusively to visit all showrooms and do a TD on all bikes which were on my list. I thought that will help me to finalise my decision. But still I am unable to make the final call.

Below are the list of bikes I am considering after today's experiences
                    1. Pulsar RS200(even though I am not sure I will be able to ride this beast, I like it personally)
                    2. Pulsar 220f
                    3. Hornet 160r
                    4. Fz-s
                    5. Apache RTR 200 4v

Kindly help me out fellow riders. Thanks in advance guys.

PS: I know my english is not that great. Kindly bear with me.

Hello friend! I am fine. My main purpose is to commute daily a total distance of 30kms. This is for 2 years only. If I get a transfer, this will also change according to my place of posting. I use to ride at an average speed of 70-80 kms in free roads. In busy roads, I maintain an average speed of 30-40kms. Expected mileage is 35kmpl. Budget is 1.5lakh INR.

Then I think the RS200 or the RTR200 will be a better bet. As you've mentioned the Avg speed will be around 30-40kmph in city and 70-80kmph on the highways, the RTR200 will be a better option. It has a solid mid range grunt and is easy to handle. It weights quiet lesser than the RS200. The refinement levels, fit finish and overall quality is better too. You can choose the top end Fuel injected + ABS + Pirelli Tyres which will cost you less than 1.4L on road.

I visited one TVS showroom yesterday. They had just two bikes for display. They told me that sales will start after 20days. That is for the carburetor version. FI version will take 6 months it seems. I don't know whether they will include ABS at that time. It is very annoying as even the dealer's are not having clear information.
