  • Comfortable long lasting bike to run 160 kms daily

    Hi all,

To give a background on myself:

    Age - 37 years
    Residing - Greater Noida
Riding - Daily 160 kms. Home ( Greater Noida ) to Office ( Gurgaon Hero Honda Chowk ) - 80 kms one way. Roundtrip 160 kms daily. Occasional weekend touring upto 1000 kms.
Current Bike owned - RE Thunderbird ( September 2015 model ), Odo 35 kms, Condition immaculate visually and mechanically.

I have a requirement to change my bike if possible. Reason have a bad cervical and handling the RE in rush hour traffic is aggravating the situation. Also RE as all know come with tubed tyres and TB comes with a complicated rear disc set up. Have had 3 punctures till now and have spent 500 bucks on each owing to the puncture guys conning me with a new tube, also the rear dics set up once removed is rocket science for these guys to fix.
I have looked into options of changing to alloys and tubeless tyres. Not in favour of it owing to durability of alloys.
Also as stated above have a bad cervical problem which gets highly aggravated while negotiating office traffic on my return.

Bikes considered - Firstly the bike should be durable to last for years on. I do not change vehicles frequently
Secondly I am a sedate rider and ride at speeds upto 90 on the highways. Anything above that find risky owing to traffic and road conditions.

Pulsar 220 - before my TB had a P220 2013 model. Was kept like a baby, feeded on Motul and was never handled roughly. Excellent machine as per me never had any issues till 2 years of ownership. Was suprised inspire of being pampered the engine became rough at 33k. However excellent reliability, only things changed was the starter motor and the chain set. My first choice to buy again if given an option
AS 200 - do not see much on Delhi/ NCR roads inspire of what I have heard to be an excellent machine, hence ownership not common inspite being a pulsar. Do not know much about the machine except ot being from the Pulsar family.
AS 150 - same dynamics as AS 200 except lower engine ratio and lower profile tyres. Have seen some of these in Delhi/ NCR but still uncommon. Being a 150 how would it handle my requirements along with durability.
Unicorn 150 - have heard about this bike and now it has been relaunched. Missing goodies compared to Uni 160. Am not sure if going for outdated tech will be a suitable option ( I would consider my Tb and 220 modern compared to this). Plus there is a grouse of tube tyres.
Unicorn 160 - I am ok with the looks. Will it be durable as per my requirements. With Hornet coming in am not sure whether this would be discontinued with its sales cannibalized with whatever was there. Not so common in Delhi/NCR.

I remember last year you had asked the same question, but it was with regards to an aging P220. I think i suggested not to go for the T'Bird. Do consider the CBR 250 as well.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Monk...thanks for approving. I do have an inherent love for RE's that's the reason why this is my second TB. Maybe should have considered your suggestion.
CBR 250 is kind of out of budget for me. Max I can spend is upto 1 k

Ok.. if your budget is 1L, opt for a Gixxer.. very much refined, reliable and well..it is a Suzuki... smoothness redefined..

Else if you can get your hands on a well maintained CBR250 from the used market, nothing would be better.. I am also searching for a used CBR250 in and around Ghaziabad, there are loads of options available for 1L with ABS

Re: Comfortable long lasting bike to run 160 kms daily

              160 Km a day & 1000 Km a weekend huh!!

Let me try a little of my brain here!!

              160 X 5 days (assuming Sat & Sun are holiday) = 800 Km
              Weekend Touring = 1000 Km

Total per week = 1800 Km
              Per Month = 4 weeks X 1800 Km = 7200 Km a month
              Hypothetically it works to 7200 X 12 = 86400 Km a year!!

Let's knock off holidays, some weekends which cannot be done & everything put together & make it just 50% of year = 43200 Km a year!!

Assuming, just assuming, its going to be a long service interval motorcycle with 6000 Km, then # services per year = 7 services X (rough) 3000 per service = Rs 21000
Fuel cost for 43200 Km (at 30 Kmpl average) = 1440 liters X (roughly) 60 Rs per litre = Rs 86400
              Tire changes assuming every 22000 Km = 2 X 6500 = 13000

So, basically you're looking for a motorcycle to...
              - Ride 43200 Km a year
              - Spend Rs 21000 on service, Tires Rs 13000 & Rs 86400 on fuel (total Rs 120400)

And you're OK to spend over a lakh on operational cost which is more than the cost of the motorcycle itself in a year's time!!

Just FYI - HVK's Scorp has done more than 450000 Km in 12 years which averages about 37500 Km a year!!

Aargee so the 1000kms weekend trips are situational.
                Rest its 160kms per day
Service intervals are 3000kms, service costs are 1500 approx
Mileage should be 35kmpl as per what the bike gives me currently RE mileage.
Roughly what I cover is 4000kms per month so that would be 48000 a year.
My TB was bought in September 2015 and has already covered 35 k on the odo.
That's why what I stated was a long lasting bike which would not disintegrate.

At your place, I would have picked up the Old ultra reliable Unicorn, if pillion comfort is mandatory or else Gixxer 150 will do the job. Cruise at 80 without vibs, and easy on pocket. Also as some others have mentioned, pre used CBR150/250 withing the price range.

What is the major difference between Uni 150 & 160 ride wise. I had test ridden with the Gixxer. It seemed rough to me

Also Uni 150 I believe was relaunched due to demand but do not see any new ones on the road

The low sales of 160 might just make Honda stop it. 150 has a cult following. It might not sell well in metros, but in small cities, it still has huge demand.
If you find the Gixxer rough, drop it out. To each, his own.

160 kms a day is a lot of distance to cover on a motorcycle on our roads. I hope you regularly exercise.

Coming to the motorcycle, if you are sedate rider, Unicorn is not a bad choice. I have owned one for 6 years. Unicorn is very reliable, just swap the tyres with a tubeless one and you are good to go. Fuel efficiency should be between 45-50 kmpl range. Seats on Unicorn is very comfortable for long journey's.

Offtopic: Just ask out of curiosity. Why not shift to Gurgaon? For one third of the money you are spending on commuting, you can get a decent house in Gurgaon plus you also get to spend more time with family. When i was working in GGN, had a friend of mine who use commute till greater Noida everday. In his case, he was provided with company cabs.

The reason I cannot shift to gurgaon is because I used to stay in Dwarka previously and work in Gurgaon, however bought a flat in Greater Noida and am still searching for a job in Noida, but in the interim have to still work in Gurgaon. Looking at the slump in the job market in my field have not been able to find something for the last 1 year.
Coming to a bit on technicalities, my TB does 80 at 3000 rpm, if the Uni does 80 at 7000rpm would it not be a more stressed out engine. My 220 used to do 80 at 5000 rpm ?
