      I own a Gixxer.
Fairing helps for better aerodyanmics but not prevent wind blast. The puny windscreen on Gixxer sf does not help to prevent wind blast.
100kmph all day on a small 150cc motorcycle is asking too much. Short outburst is ok but riding it all day puts out of it's comfort zone.
Yes it does have a gear indicator.

What about the newly launched avenger 220 cruise? Is it good for long tours? I have heard mixed reactions about the bike

The bike is definitely extremely good . It is meant for touring and comfortable riding . Though you will have to get used to the riding position

Finally, scaled down to 2 choices. Either the avy or gixxer sf

You should go for avenger 220. The 2018 model is a lot more improved than older one. Riders used to complain about the power lag in the mid rev range but now that has been sorted out. And the bike is highly stable and smooth on highways. In cities, once you get used to riding position its a wonderful experience to ride this bike.
              Hope this helps.
              Ride safe!

I'd suggest that you get a long test ride of all the bike which you have shortlisted. Better to borrow a day from fellow riders. Personal choices vary widely. Decide on your comfort and also do check out the ownership thread of the bikes
                  Happy riding!

Test rode gixxer, hornet, Apache yesterday. In my opinion hornet has a heavy front end and shorter handlebars. Gixxer was very comfortable, wide handlebars and good features
