  • Need bike for daily use - Honda Hornet 160R/ TVS Apache

    1. Budget - under 1 lakh
    2. Age - 28
    3. Height - 5' 10"
    4. Weight - 110
    5. Intended usage - Office commute, Highway runs.
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement - 40 kmpl
    7. City & Highway percentage usage - 50-50
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running - 1600-2000
    9. City Ludhiana - usual traffic & jams - few broken city roads - travel on highway
    10. Brand / Bike type preference - TVS Apache RTR 180 or Honda Hornet 160R - ABS is must so could find only these two - also, I need a bigger seat for pillion rider, Gixxer and such have a smaller seat.

I would prefer the bike to have good low end power to navigate the traffic without much gear shifting & should do 80-90 kmph on highway without engine noise/vibration. Suspension should be comfortable as there are lots of bumps on road.

I am currently using 2008 Honda Shine 125cc - so need an upgrade on power & highway travel like 100 kms in a day + dual channel ABS for added safety.

Edit - Hornet is single channel ABS so, I'm left with only RTR180 ABS

    Topic Approved.

Around your budget, these bikes have ABS...

    Pulsar NS200 ABS version,
    TVS Apache RTR 180 ABS,
    Honda Hornet 160 ABS,

Out of these, I suggest Hornet 160 ABS for your needs.

Let other members reply, they might be able to suggest better....

Go for gixxer abs. It has got good low end torque, better suspension than hornet, better pick up

Gixxer has a smaller rear seat.

Thanks mod for the approval, NS200 ABS is 1.1L ex-showroom - beyond budget, also the ABS is single channel.

Well then, the only option you have is RTR 180 ABS since you need a Dual Channel ABS bike under 1lakh. If you cannot push your budget then this ends the discussion.

My suggestion would be to wait for RTR 160 4V to get the ABS unit. When will that happen? I dont know but it will definitely be worth the wait.

Not sure TVS is awake enough to bring anything in market.
They announced so many variants and not delivered them till date.
If rear seat is a must and so is the ABS then A180.
Else I'll even suggest P220. Super easy to maintain. Own a 220 since 2015 and I love it.

Yeah it looks awesome, it will only have single channel ABS though. But the power/Torque curve showed that the torque remains in play throughout the rpm range, if its really like that - it'd be awesome.

I think Apache appeals more to me - but I'd be glad to know your experience.

Would you agree that Dual Channel ABS is worth it, for me I think it'll be helpful in wet & rough tarmac, which is a usual affair on Indian roads.

ABS is not a magical device. It is a rider aid, not a safety feature. It will not magically save you from accidents. If you have to depend on it to ride on wet and rough tarmac then you should probably re-evaluate your riding skills before going for a purchase.

Is it worth it? Wrong question. Is it worth it to buy the RTR180 with Dual channel ABS? IMO No

Why? Because RTR180 is an old generation product from TVS. The new generation products are teh 160 4V and 200 4V. 160 4v outperforms the 180 in almost everything except being 10kgs heavier.

To buy a bike solely on the basis of ABS is a mistake.

Hope that clears any doubt. Test Ride all possible options before deciding.

Thanks for your comments bro - I wanted ABS as it'd aid traction under sudden braking which is common in my everyday commute due to lotsa traffic/ idiotic drivers/ animals(typical of India)/ rough road conditions etc.

I agree its a comparatively older gen motor but then again 160 4V seems a bit stressed due to high compression ratios (someone raised the point in another thread about higher compression ratios leading to high stress & being proportional to higher maintenance - but since they've oil-cooled the motor I think it'd make a difference.) I'll have to check if the seat has been changed from prev Apache series. Guess I'll visit their showroom & check it out myself.

Have you experienced both these bikes as it;'d a;lso provide knowledge into the hands-on comparison. 180 has been said to be less refined at higher rpm is that so with the 160 too?

Yes I have test ridden both the bikes. Both are great. ABS is great to have for emergency situations and I encourage everyone to get ABS bike if possible but if you are going to choose a bike with lower specifications just for the dual channel ABS as compared to a bike with higher specs with single channel ABS, in the same price range, then thats a mistake.

Depends on what you mean by higher RPMs. I have ridden both bikes upto 8k RPM and both were fine other than the occasional vibes.

Rear brake lockup can be easily managed. Infact it shouldnt lockup if you are careful enough and know proper braking techniques. Front brake lockup will definitely result in a crash. Single channel ABS means its present only in the front which is where its needed and not in the rear. 160 4V doesnt come with ABS yet so thats out of the option for now. Look into options that other members have suggested.

All the best! Cheers. (If you really feel like RTR180 ABS is the bike for you then by all means go for it. Go through the Ownership thread to see if there are any major problems with the bike)

I guess I get your point bro, its plain outdated & 2000s bike. And, I was going heads over heel over it only for dual channel ABS. And yeah, its the front wheel that does most of the braking so having ABS in that only matters the most. And, I think I've never had rear wheel lock too.

EDIT --- Guess that opens up the debate for other bikes now - The only thing that i noticed is that newer bikes have a short seat for pillion, I do not want that. And I only saw Pulsars & Apache with a proper long style seat. Are there any new bieks with that kinda seat avl?

160 4v is more refined but rtr 180 is more comfortable, only con of 180 is vibration issues

Yes hornet and xblade are available. I advise you to wait for 2019 and you'll get a lot of options [emoji3][emoji106]
