• Yezdi or not?

Hey guys!

I have owned a beautiful stock R15S 2016 model for around 9-10 months now and I quite feel the need to upgrade. I initially thought of plonking in some performance parts from Race Dynamics as I visit Bangalore every now and then, but then quite didn't want to mess with the masterpiece of a stock setup. The next option was to jump to a CBR250R but a lot of my friends in the motorcycling scene advised me against it considering my scenario. I keep travelling due to my work and go home only once in a couple months. What they told me is that I might not have the ease of access to spare parts or good service from Honda unless I find a specific service center that is known well for its servicing. I usually drop my Yamaha at the nearest service center to my hotel and forget about it till I get a call back from them for the pick up. This has worked out pretty well for me so far but might not be the case with the Honda. Now one of my friends actually gave me an idea of getting a Yezdi (something I've always wanted since I was a kid) because of its hassle free and easy to maintain engine. Apparently he knows a guy in Mysore who restores yezdis so beautifully that they actually run as if they just were out of the showroom. Now I'm in a dilemma as to what to go for? Something practical like a new motorcycle or a Yezdi?

Shed some light on this, guys.

So, let me understand this. You think decades old 2S is easier to maintain and more reliable than CBR 250? The parts of these old 2S coat their weight in gold, leave apart the fact of their availability. I think and hope your friend is joking.

Get any powerful latest bike that you have ASC around your place. That way your lust for more power will be quenched and you'll find it easier to maintain and have some happy miles with smiles.

Hi Zapps,

The thing is, a Yezdi AFAIK is easier to work on by myself than the R15.

The parts, if I'm not wrong are not all that expensive as compared to a CBR250R. Also, I have good access to them due to these friends of mine. One of them has been restoring yezdis for quite a long time now and the others own one or two for the similar time. Agreed I might have to go around with a few spares along with me, but my issue is when I have a premium motorcycle, I want it to be in the best hands possible.

Also, like I said, I keep travelling due to my work, so it's never in the same place again. Sometimes those places are in such remote places that you'd really be shocked. So in most cases ASCs are a no-no. Which is why I'm switching to something that can be tinkered upon on my own without consuming a lot of my time. The most annoying thing I find on faired motorcycles are that for even the little things I need to open the fairing up, which tbh, freaks me out about my next ride.

I'm sorry if my question was not clear, but I mean to ask that is Yezdi a good option for self-maintainance or is there something better?

P.S. there's a soft spot for 2 strokes. So yeah!

One word, avoid unless you have plenty of spare time to maintain it.

I am not sure by what logic someone would call a age old machine to be more reliable and easy to maintain as compared to a pretty recent proven Japanese engine.
Would really love to try the stuff people use to provide such unearthly logic.
@OP Do you really think a age old 2S engine would have the refinement and finesse that a modern Japanese 4S engine would have? Do use your own brain and logic and then decide. Since you travel around for work, its better to buy something reliable. These old horses are mostly meant for short rides once in a while and not highway mile munching.
If you feel 250R doesnt have enough power, look at N300 or R3.
If you feel confident of working on a age old Yezdi, then why not on a R15 or CBR? At least for these bikes, you can get service manual and multitude of YouTube How-to videos.

What's with the aggressive replies guys?

Like I said already, I have a soft spot for 2S. Also, are the responders actually familiar with the motorcycle to spread so much hate? I mean the thing's been running since the 80's if I'm not wrong. Also, please refer the internet as to how easy it is to maintain. hellgate, no offense but I do have a brain and I've owned an R15 and done my time with the CBR too. Shifting to a Yezdi is merely because of my craze towards it and the maintenance part. The logic is simple. Lesser moving parts=lesser maintenance.

Cheers.

Its not about offence. If your heart is set on Yezdi, do get it. Dont try to justify it here with points which does not make sense to others.
This is an open forum and you came asking for suggestion. We folks didnt go about bugging you.
If you ask something illogical, then do expect similar kind of responses.
If something is running since the 80s, doesnt mean its a good idea to go and get it.
Hope you get the point.

I really don't get the point tbh. And yes, if wanted to get the yezdi without any hesitation then definitely I wouldn't have posted it on xbhp, right? I'm looking for alternatives, the only reason for my reply above is the way you went all guns blazing. It'd be really helpful if you could stop trying to help me out with this, no offense.

Re: Yezdi or not?

If you like the Yezdi, I would say go for it. Follow your heart and you will be happy.
However, it remains to be said that Yezdi won't be as trouble-free as any of the modern bikes despite being 2stroke and there could be a possibility of breakdowns on the highway or remote location being an old bike.
If you like the Yezdi look, probably go for a Jawa which has a decent engine with old world charm. Alternatively, you could have 2 bikes -
1. CB300 which has a Neo-retro feel to it and has no fairings or perhaps Int650 if you want more power.
2. Yezdi and maintain it for short runs in the city and 2s fun!

Dear Sir,

Please mind your attitude.
People were giving you sensible suggestion for alternatives. But you made statements which clearly show your eagerness to get Yezdi.

Yezdi is a dream machine for so many 2 stroke enthusiasts. Many doesn't realize the fun of riding a 2 stroke. Sure it is easier to maintain. But the problem comes with spares. I booked a Jawa recently. Before that I researched a lot about the older 2 stroke Yezdi. And my initial plans were same as yours. I always dreamt of owning a 2 stroke. Everything is OK. But availability of parts will be an issue. Even if you find them, prices are exorbitant and illogical. And the news is that Government is putting a permanent ban on 2 stroke motorcycles once BS6 norms kick in. So unless you want to buy it just for joy rides and occasional riding, it wouldn't make sense. This is my opinion. I dropped the plan and booked a Jawa as I need it for daily commute.

You live only once dude. If you can spend, then don't think twice.
