I am new to driving in India, so am looking for something safe and easy handling. I'd like something sporty AND with some power to it. I really like the look of the TVS Scooty Streak, but it doesn't seen to have much power like the Activa (which I really don't like the look of!).

One other consideration is whether it's better to have a lighter bike. Would that make it easier to handle, or make it less stable? I'm not sure...

Are there any other options? Or does the Scooty have more power than it seems?
I bought a Scooty Streak for my Sister yesterday, i also took a test ride it has more power than Scooty pep. In my family all the ungeared scooters are there except for Pleasure which is an Activa with Plastic body. I personally like the Streak and Access more, streak is very good for people who dont drive above 50 kmph and who like powerful scooter Access does the job.

Like Bunny said here If you are new to two wheelers go for the scooty as your first ride, else access is the best option out there now and then comes new activa with combined brakes to ease your ride.

Wow! I didn't expect so many replies so quick!

I looked at the Suzuki Access. It doesn't seem to have great reviews, though. I like that it has 125 cc, though, and it seems to have good handling (but maybe that's for more experienced drivers?).

And I like the looks of the Aviator but I'm afraid it's going to be too big -- both too tall and too heavy -- for me to handle it well. I like that it has good shock absorption, though.

Oh, and I HATE the style of the Hero Honda Pleasure. I am of the "fairer" sex, as ya'll mention , but not a teenager anymore.

My worry about not having so much power isn't going fast so much as getting up hills, getting around people quickly so I don't get boxed in, etc. Not that once i get used to it, going fast won't be a good thing too. But when I was almost convinced against the Scooty, you all have me nearly convinced for it again!

I wish I could pick and choose what I like, and build my own!

Anusha, I have seen lot of Aviators driven by young ladies here in Hyderabad. When you first ride the scooter, you may find it taller, but once you ride it for a day or two, you will get used to it. Same thing experienced by my colleague. The Aviator is excellent in all the aspects. More over, it is a Honda.

For handling, the best scooter is SYM Flyte (from Mahindra Kinetic). Easy maneuvering and best handling. A breeze to ride in traffic. My wife owns one and I love to ride it around the city. One negative side is, it is from Kinetic and service is now here near the competition. You get the maximum storage space in the scooter too.

                  ^^^
Access not having good reviews --

                  So my two cents
Access -- overall the best -- but you kinda not liking it. It has got the balance of everything, infact everything almost perfect.

Activa -- great machine except it's a bit big and mileage used to suffer. No idea for the new one.

Deo -- Mileage is a concern as per my friend who owns it.

Aviator -- a bit big and I don't think it has enough grunt to match the looks

Pleasure -- as always typical HH bike -- almost everything is good nothing exceptional nothing poor. A bit hard on the seat and shockers.

Scooty Pep/Streak - good bike for single drive. With pillion a bit strained though it can pull. Avg is at par any other bike, cheapest, lightest, smallest, least powerful but if I take my sis's words it's better than activa for daily commuting and one more thing if you are short on height or even otherwise broad body of activa always creates problem(another quote from my friend's wife who owns an activa and likes pleasure over it).

Another good option was Flyte but it's maker company got sold and I don't see many on road now. And flyte was a 125CC scoot.

                  from my side:
                  - if it's your first scoot and most of the time only you are going to ride it, get a scooty - it's a tried and tested product.
                  - if you want a scoot which anyone can drive, ride or use comfortably form your family go for access.
                  - and if usage are moderate of above - go for Dio or new Activa or a pleasure

I love the Honda Dio among the scooters its zippy handles really well, I found out slaloming on a very stony track in Goa and the Dio behave ver sure footted. And the looks are amazing especially the front end. Its really sporty. The Activa looks quite dull compared to it.

Hmm... Is the Suzuki Access still a 6 months waiting period? Cause that would be a deal breaker even if I did like it.

The SYM Flyte has a lot of poor reviews, which is really disappointing. I am not prepared to take on a lot of maintenance, otherwise I'd buy a used bike. So I'm a bit nervous of that.

^^ If that is the case, go for the scooty.

I don't think so, just check Suzuki dealer in your city.

I would suggest a Honda Dio.Good handling, light, enough power for the city.

If you want something lighter,go for the Flyte or Scooty.

Flyte : After sales is poor, costlier maintainence, better avoid till mahindra rectifies it's after sales network.
Scooty Streak : Same Pep + with different body parts, good for one year use. None of the scooty have had shelf life of more than 2 years. First one year is 'happy period' after that scooties tend to show up minor niggles, sometime even major.
Krystal : People's confidence in Bajaj scooters went down drastically due to couple of bad models, not sure if krystal is good or not.
Pleasure : It shattered TVS game of selling Scooty as unisex product by offering 100cc for girls only, Hondas move was a master stroke. 'Just 4 her' is a very good scheme. Still a good bet for girls/women. Decent performance, HH reliability, excellent svc network.
Activa : The multipurpose tool, is almost a pet in everybody's home, smooth, refined, trouble free, low maintainence, long lasting.
Access : Stunning performer 0-60 in under 6 sec !! It will put some powerful bikes to shame at traffic signal starts.

@anusha : better pick either Activa or Pleasure or even a Dio...

                                Good luck !
