  • Honda Unicorn or Bajaj Avenger ( Weird comparison?? ) Yeah I kno!!

    Hello Guys,
Lemme introduce myself, I'm a student-cum-trainee in Mumbai.. 5.11" 65 kgs & absolute craze for biking.
I'v ridden a lot of bikes (Splendor,Libero,Unicorn,Pulsar150,FZ16,Karizma) but those all were of my friends & now m seriously in urgent need of a bike for myself. Its going to be my first ride so I had a intense online research & narrowed down my choices to Honda Unicorn & Bajaj Avenger.. Weird & contradicting choices but here's why I dont wanna go 4 other bikes (based on internet reviews & few personal user opinions)..

Pulsar brothers: Reliability issues, uncomfortable 4 long rides, high maintenance

FZ16: No problems @ all except its too common on roads now, I hav 5 FZ variants in my family & frnd circle so I'm bit reluctant 2 b jus another FZ guy ( though it may sound stupid )

Apache: Mileage & maintenance issues. Sporty riding postures.

GS150R : Service centers unavailability, unproven reliability (... jus no interest in a suzuki .. sorry if i offended any1)

HH CBZ/Hunk : Mileage issues creeps in again

Finally here's why I opted for the followin two choices.

    Honda Unicorn:
No body would disagree that Unicorn is a engineering marvel of its time & stil going strong. I really give a damn about looks or an outdated model. All I care is for a strong performer with best in class mileage for city commuting & hassle free maintenance with reliability. 99% of the reviews on net about honda unicorn helped me 2 b convinced that its a best buy 4 me. Plus I'v ridden it & I just loved it & dont mind at all for it 2 take place of my very 1st bike. I'm well aware about honda after sales service issues but lets say I'm willing 2 take chances with that.

Now comes a shocking choice by a novice biker like me,
    Bajaj Avenger:
Let me b very clear that I have'nt even touched a cruiser yet, let alone a TD on Bajaj Avenger. However, since long I had my eyes set on that baby. What I like about it most is that it lets you stand out from the rest of the crowd. Its wickedly awesome looks never fades away from my mind. I keep on starring an Avenger on road all the way till it disappears from my sight. Well, that all about its looks.. Coming to its performance point (based on internet reviews ) I kno its d most comfy bike in India, speciall for long rides. Its a decent performer & very low on mileage ( ready to compromise mileage just for this one ) To sum it up, I kno all the positives & negatives (mostly) of d Avenger but let me jus say that "I love her" Its like loving some 1 ignoring her shortcomings so I wont go 4 other bike even if it is better in all fronts then Avenger. U guys may feel m being a bit too stubborn here, but i hope & I know I'm not coz Its just my love for the bike. I dont wanna feel like GOD, jus wanna find out what makes others feel lik GOD on it.

P.S - Planning a TD of Avenger this month ( I kno it wud b vry difficult 4 me bt I'm confident coz I believe m a quick learner with love for the subject m about 2 learn )

SO here r my questions 2 u guys:
    1) Being a new rider -- Unicorn or Avenger?
    2) I love Unicorn's GP editions so is it worth wailtin for a GP edition which Honda might launch or not(m not sure)?
    3) Last & moost important Question.. Is it wise on my part 2 go 4 Avenger jus coz I blindly love the bike?
    4) Any other valuable suggestions by u guys on other bikes?

    P.S
I cant go 4 any bike above 75 K on-road so pls advice me accordingly!!

    Thanks.

Both bikes have their pros and cons. I would say go with what the heart says! You can not go wrong with either one. But, Avenger may be a little cumbersome to handle in the city.

Biking is as much about the heart ( desire , joy ) as much as mind ( technique , reasoning ).
You really desire the Avenger, go for it. With hobbies and passions, follow the heart if your financial state can afford to. Buying the perfectly rational choice which suits your needs and pockets best but doesn't give you half the joy in riding will only make you turn your head everytime the desired object comes into view, and you begin to regret making a perfectly sensible , rational decision , it's reliability or smoothness notwithstanding . I don't know your financial state , income and liabilities , but the price difference between a Unicorn and Avenger is about 8-10K , not a huge one. Go with your heart this time.

PS : That's precisely why I think Bullets still sell !

@mitz : Your post indicates you are quite knowledgeable to make a decision on your own.....and my opinion is 'Unicorn over Avenger'

HH CBZ/Hunk : Mileage issues creeps in again

CBZ/Hunk delivers variety of fuel efficiency depending on how the rider twists his right hand. Under ordinary city driving conditions expect CBZ/Hunk to return mileage close to Unicorn.

@mitz: perhaps you are unaware that the avenger carries a mutated pulsar "unreliable" engine. So with the absolute discontent that you have with "unreliable" pulsar engines, please go ahead and buy the Unicorn/Achiever/Hunk/Karizma...in short any bike from the HH/Honda stable. Why???? cause no matter what you do to them (no servicing, 1000 hr ripping, no oil runs, no cleaning filters, no adjustments and no nothing) they will be the smoothest and most reliable machines around.

Hi abhijeet, as u said Avenger wud b cumbersome in city riding conditions, i totally agree to the point but that inconvenience wud b just 4 a week or two or atmost a month, until i set my hands on it perfectly... After that, i dont assume ther shud b much of a problm I guess

Amazing use of words dude!! I totally fell into wat u explianed bout How biking is related to Mind & Heart.. Personally speakin, I'v always followed my mind, but its an Avenger yaar... forcing me 2 follow my heart but still i cud not stop my mind from interfering in my decision 2 get Avenger.. On other hand, I cud very well buy Avenger initially, however I was just unsure as 2 its running & maintenance cost since it wud b almost double of d average maintenance cost of a Unicorn I assume..

You will get used to it, yes. But, it will never be as flickable as say Apache or even Pulsar.

R u sure bout that dude?? coz i have'nt even came across a single review which cud say that HH CBZ extreme gives mileage even close 2 a Unicorn.. Even HH Hunk wud b slightly sluggish then a unicorn. I cud simply tell u this coz both Hunk & CBZ bear the same engine as honda, but they are tuned 4 a better performance while ignoring the mileage issues. Either ways dude, If I hav a choice between Uni,Hunk & CBZ... I wud blindly go 4 a UNI... Wat wud b ur choice out of those 3??

Actually I was ver well aware about the same old Pulsar engine in an Avenger.. Bajaj has tuned down the 200cc Pulsar engine for the new Avenger. The new avenger ’s 200cc DTSi engine produces only 17.51 at 8000rpm(0.5PS less than the pulsar 200cc). Avenger 200cc DTSi produces only 16.78Nm at 6000rpm.. These r d details frm 1 of d reviews i referred in my research...
Apart from the Pulsar's unreliable engine (too rude to say unreliable engine, coz I'v seen Pulsar's go around 4 years & years.. al they need is much attention on maintenance) I'v also been thru othr problms wit Avenger lik rusting of chrome, braking issues, uncomfortable 4 pillion on long rides, bit heavier etc etc..
But I'v overlooked those issues jus coz its a Avenger yaar.. I love it d way it is.. & may b m almost ready 2 accept it but jus giving sum last thoughts with d help of friendly expert opinions frm u guys out here...

On other hand, wateva u said bout HH or Honda bikes, i'm i complete agreement wit u.. & dats d only reason y I'm considering Unicorn over Avenger since I cant resist d temptation of almost zero maintenance ( atleast in earlier years of my ownership ) that HH & Honda bikes offer.

I've extensively ridden hunk and it never returns above 50kmpl even under sane riding, while the uni gave me close to 50 even with many twist of the right wrist.. under sane riding habits the uni can deliver close to 55 easily.. so +1 for uni..

I'd suggest you to go for uni... Not that Avenger is a bad bike but as you have shown concern towards mileage, uni will be a better bet.. The avenger delivers close to 40 and with its stance and 200cc mill is an awesome tourer.. with either of the machines u wouldn't go wrong, just prioritize what u'll be doing with it...
Avi - Awesome tourer + macho looks
Uni - Power commuter with good efficiency..

yeah dats true!! but aftrall pulsar's & apache r meant 4 performance & handling while Avenger is gud 4 comfort & classy looks.. so i guess, v hav 2 manage with wat v need most

Yeah dats right... I'v not come across a guy who can bet his Uni returns less then 50-55kmpl (no matter hw old she is or hw she is ridden)...
Its too complicated 4 me to decide coz I love Avenger but not its features & benefits.. & i love all d benefits associated wit owning a Uni but I dont love Uni as much..
