  • Best Tourister....!!

Hello riders, I have been hanging around in this community for a while. First of all let me congratulate you for the splendid achivements (like the recent Oz road trip and tonnes of others). Its so glad to see a mature lobby of the bikers developing at an impressive speed and really at par with the international level.

Now before torchering you with my questions of which bike to buy (just like every other newbie), I would really like to update you about myself and the reason of 'me' here. I am 25 years old, an escort cum travel agent based in delhi. I organise tours for the foreginers coming in our land and have been to a lot of places in India.....Biking is certainly a lot than just a hobby, I started cycling when I was 6 (dont know if its early, if it is then m proud). I had wished of biking 1000+ kms twice of thrice every year but couldnt manage it due to my career and profession. But now I have taken some decesions and have planned the following programmes starting from Jan 2010 :

    # 1
    Date : Jan 2010
    Programme : Delhi - Jaipur - Udaipur - Jodhpur - Jaisalmer - Bikaner- Delhi

    # 2
    Date : April-May 2010
    Programme : Delhi - Gwalior - Jhansi - Oorchha - Khajuraho - Panna Wildlife century - Gwalior - Delhi

    # 3
    Date : July 2010
    Programme : Delhi - Haridwar - Phahda - Kedarnath - Gangotri - Badrinath - Haridwar - Delhi.

    more to follow later.

Now you know: Which bike will suit me the best ? My max budget is 75 K. I had shortlisted p220, zma and p180. I am a little concerned about zma and 220 because of their front lights which dont move with the handle while taking the turn. I was thinking that this may be a little dangerous in remote areas of Raj/MP where i'll be taking a sharp turn in the dark without any street or any other light ? If I go with 180 then i think i may miss some real power in the dark desert empty roads. I am 5'11, 77 Kgs. A little confused and would appreciate your analysis and advices.

ZMA wuld fit u r bill perfectly.. dont worry much about the head ligths.. ppl have been touring in remote places like leh-ladakh in ZMA & havent faced any such problems..

P220 is a wonderful bike but wen it is compared to ZMA in touring loose out points in terms of refinement & comfortness due to short clip on handles. u can do 90-100 speeds all day all night long in zma & d engine will still be butter smooth..

180 also cannot be termed as a tourer due to the same above reasons..

Dont worry about the head lamps ..... the lights for ZMA and P220 are broad and bright enough...... Go for ZMA.... best in call and low noise.....

Also Consider RE Bullets. But LB500 will be out of your budget.STD 350 is a Nice Option.

When it comes to touring, you can tour on any damn bike as long as you love to ride 'that' bike.

I will tell you what I tell everyone with similar questions, have a 20-30kms long test run on the bikes that you have shortlisted. Decide based on what your heart tells you to buy then. All bikes are good in their own right, and have their own set of pro's and con's.

Regarding the headlights not turning along with the direction of turn, well above speeds of 30 it wont really matter coz even for moving headlight type of bikes the headlight hardly turns much into a corner.

^^^ I second that. Unless you are in 1st gear kind of movement you wouldn't be able to turn your headlight so much. As such, the beam from both the ZMA & the P220 is wide enuff and is better than that of P180.

How must does zma cost in del ? p220 is 75k on road and fits my bill. Let me honest, I had zeroed myself to p220 earlier but then waited and joined you guys to make a note of your scenarios. read somewhere that clip on bar handles are actually more pro-tours ?

Hi, I've also read some threads here where people would anytime prefer p220 over zma. What made them think so? or those were just their personal opinions.

Bullets are heavyweights and have poor throttle response and low initial pick up, thats why i didnt shortlist them. please correct me if m wrong.

hi, i can see that you've got p220. I was little more inclined towards p220 due to its better mileage. There are some friends in our circle who own zma and complain about its meager mileage which hardly exceeds 25km/l even if they ride it at 50-60 km/h.

I see, thats good. I wont have to worry about that light now.

both zma and P220 have proved their touring potentials and you have many owners of these steeds here to prove the fact...since P220 is in your budgets reach, just go for it,though zma too is a damn good tourer to be ignored...as for the headlights buddy, that won't be a hindrance at all unless you keep taking U-turns throughout...
It all begins with a thumb-start -- Oh, wait, I forgot the kill-switch

As praful said, any bike could be used for touring. Just you need to know 'Your' bike. Once you get user-friendly with your own bike, u can take anywhere & she wont complain.
P220 am not sure, have not test driven, only on the Dyno. so cannot comment.
ZMA i myself own it & have done numerous long tours without any hitches. Just did a Mumbai-LEH-Mumbai trip, where we rode for 10-15 hours daily for over 19 days. I never felt any body-ache problems, nor my bike gave any problems throught the 6500kms journey except for the normal punctures.
But, even the other riders didnt had any problems with their bikes which where RTR160, Electra & A P150. So I would'nt sideline Karizma its the best among the rest, but I concluded after this trip was any 'tamed' bike can be taken. I cannot neglect the fact that Karizma is one of the best tourers available relative to most of the factors of power, comfort, relibility.

About the lights not turning on the corners, thats not at all a problem. As it will only effect the handle is turned too much while taking a turn which is not done actually on the corners. No-one is going to spend more than even 2-3 seconds taking that kind of turn where the handle is turned & headlight straight. The lights are good enough & has a good spread.
P220 lights are way to powerful & wont be at all a problem on turns as the spread is relatively big.
Make sure you test atleast a bit & just choose a machine, get saddled up & jump for the tours that you have planned. I assure u, none of the two machines would ever make you feel regretted.

A 500 Lb has a good enuf pick up , can reach 100 effortlessly and almost as quick as the other big bikes , but is way outta your budget . I would recommend the 220 for -

                              1. Good braking
                              2. Good stock headlamps
                              3. Good straight line stability
                              4. Ample torq for min. gear shifting , effortless overtaking
                              5. Good front shocks to eat any pot holes
                              6. Tubeless stock tyes , must for tourers.
                              7. Fairing gives enuf protection to reduce fatigue
                              8. It might have good FE ( Atleat the Fi gives 35-40 no matter how hard you ride it)

the only negative point being you might not find the seat too comfy but you'll get used to it.
