  • Unicorn or GS150 R

    Hi Folks,

First of all, thanks to XBhp for providing such platform to get correct advice from experts.

I am 6ft & 70kg. I've lower backache. I use bike mostly to commute to office around 30 km a day. Not much focussed on bike looks but mileage matters.

Finalised two bikes - Unicorn & GS 150 R. Both the bikes are not available for test drive at my place.

My only concern is the seating posture, i mean posture should ease my back ache instead of making my back more painful.

    Experts pls pour your views.

    Thanks in advance.

Both bikes are equally comfortable, GSR being little more heighted. All the best.

Seating posture for both the bikes are almost similar and comfortable.
Being a tall person I guess GS is a better choice and it also comes with more goodies.

          @ TS

if you have good suzuki service back up in your city simply go for GS150R it is a wonderful machine & you will not regret your decision made..

Unicorn is a marvelous machine but gs150r has outshined it now a days in Refinment which was what Uni was special for

Both bikes provide similar comfort. But I would suggest GS 150R since it has a digital speedo, 6th cog.

Seat wise between the 2 I found GS to be better, overall also it is the better choice due to new age gadgetry, 6th cog etc.
However, I find the contoured seat of the Hunk to be really good, with a back support, do check that bike also.
At the end of the day its your comfort that matters.

Belive me, For your height, Neither of the bikes you mentioned are much comfortable. I am of your same height and little more weight. Other than Karizma and Xtreme, I dint found any other bike that has proper knee recess for tall riders.

Mileage front, they are only marginally less. Do take a test ride of other bikes too.

                  Hi friends,

                  Thanks for your valuable suggestions.

Most of you are recommending GS 150, it is true GS is with more goodies than Uni. But I wondered to see the quality issues in GS (at GS ownership thread) particularly rust issue and spares non availability and these are not minor things to take it granted.

If these issues are resolved then obviously GS is the best.
Are these pertained to some lots or all the produced GS's.

To my little knowledge i've Compared to some extent,
                  GS Unicorn
                  Posture Both are same
                  Goodies new Old style
ASservice Bad(based on response) Average at my place
                  Spares Dont know Expensive
                  Resale Dont know Good value

Even if i compromise to spares & resale value, I m much worried about quality issues. If it is rusted within months then definitely it'll be heartbreaking.

I m really confused. Pls guide me.

                  Thanks

BTW the service of suzuki is certainly not bad. In fact, Honda guys have so much attitude filled up in them, it's hard to swallow. My service experience with suzuki has been good. Also, rust is not there in everyone's bike, only a few. Mileage wise, GS has an upper hand.

While buying my bike, I was in the same dilemma which bike to buy, Uni or GS, and my preference was Uni, because it's a proven bike. But a test ride of GS blew me over. Here's the discussion thread, which is now closed.

                      Hello Friend,
Its true that a few bikes had rust issues but their percentage was really low among all the GS's. Even then suzuki service centers across india have replace all the rusted parts of bike owners under warranty; also for couple of bike owners the divisional manager came from delhi to inspect their bikes and refund their full amount.
I bought my GS in Aug from pune and there has been no rust to speak of except a little on the side stand. As to ASS of suzuki i won't say its bad, my experience was okay with respect to their service. But their ASS is much better compared to HONDA's (I had bad experiences for my activa). You first check out the location and nos. of service centers in your city of both suzuki n honda and then make your decision.
I was in same confusion as yourself with respect to UNI or GS and i haven't one bit regretted my decision.
Hope this helps in you making your decision.

+1 to rizmomin, if budget is not an issue for you, why don't u consider the trustworthy Zma also?? cos it's got the best relaxed seating posture among all the indian bikes available now that can cruise all day long.

                          The GS150R is better.
Test ride both the bikes at 80 kmph and you'll see!

                          Also, it's better styled.

+1 to GS150R. My Gs is now5 monhs old. Very little rust as mine is from 1st lot. Nothing serious though (Im not worried) and I will avail warranty asap. No other issues at all. MIleage i get is 50-55 kmpl. And yes, service is way better than Honda (i own Dio and my neighbour owns Unicorn, we both have not good experience with Honda SC at Pune). Though I suggest u check in ur area. Bcos Suzuki has very less presence in some parts of India.

Also, check other bikes too. If budget is not of concern, Karizma (zma/zmR) is good option.

What I feel is that the service at the ASS will be sub-par regardless of which company u go to. If u can get in touch with a good mech, then use the ASS only for warranty purposes, and use ur personal mech for all the problems/services.

I have a Unicorn that gives me 57kmpl in Bangalore and I ride through the thickest of traffic at peak times. I gave my bike for service to the A.S.S. for all the services, and as soon as I received the bike each time, I took it straight to my mech and got it double serviced from him as well. He used to point out to me where all the places they have missed working on.

I grease up the chain myself, polish/wax the bike myself and tighten/loosen the chain myself. I don't know where to dispose the old oil, else i'd change the oil myself too. But I make sure to use only Motul Oil (coz I found that to be the smoothest). I ask the ASS not to change the oil as I have the oil to change, and they happily agreed to it.

Agreed that the Unicorn is an old bike in the face of the GS. But its a proven bike and resale value of the Unicorn is very high. You can always find bajaj's and hero honda's on various classfied sections. How often do u see a Unicorn for sale? Unless the owner is going away for long time or something like that, it is never sold due to distress.

GS still has some way to go to catch up with the Unicorn, but I think it has the potential for it. It has been interesting to watch the Ownership thread of the GS150R.
