  • Time to upgrade my ride...

Guys,I suppose it's time I upgraded from my Gladiator. 4 years have gone past since the Bajaj Discover and the Yamaha Gladiator have been in my stable. Now they have started showing their age. The world's quite fast now and I suppose I have a lot of catching up to do.
    My choices:
    1.Bajaj Pulsar 220
    2. Yamaha R15

Now a little about me: I am 5'11''. Slim. And spoiled by the superior riding comfort offered by my Gladiator. I want my new bike to be comfortable as well.
And the other thing you must keep in mind is,I am a guest at a party more than a racer at the finish line. The P220 fits here.

Requirements: I have to do 50kms daily to college and back mostly on a highway that goes through several villages. There are buses overtaking buses, children and livestock running across the road, jeeps that will mow you down if you get in their way.
I suppose you get the idea that the bike should have excellent braking capability. The R15 should shine here,I think.

Two simple questions to the owners of both the bikes:
Yamaha R15 owners: Would you recommend the R15 for someone my height?
Bajaj P220 owners: How good is the braking ability of the bike? Does it squirm under harsh braking? Do you feel that the bike will stop in time during an emergency?

This is a question to the owners of the mentioned bikes only. Armchair reviewers should keep their hands off the keyboard.

Ive seen 5-10, 5-11 guys ride the R15 easily, but they do look funny mind you.

I personally am not that confident of the braking of the 220 when i rode it ( the FI version on the harder tyres ), but i can swear by the braking of the R15 in comparo.

If you are looking for that ultimate comfort n braking, why not consider a ZMR or ZMA-R? that will fit your bill perfectly.

        P.S: Am a ZMA-R owner speaking here

Between P220 and R15, for the conditions, its the P220, the place where you will downshift to bring in the power to overtake, the P220 will be ahead overtaking the next guy in a gear or two above yours.
          Its a real highway maniac.
Its braking capabilities are real good, but then again i am running on Sport Demon, but with these tyres, a R15 falls short.
If the class were open, i might seriously look at the ZMA or the ZMR. Now this is your highway cruiser, similar power, not many downshifts needed, great amount of torque, real comfortable, great looker, HONDA. But a simple fact, its slower than a P220 in everyway.

Don't under estimate the braking ability of the P220. It is damn good. It might be less than the R15 but that margin is something most of us wouldn't be able to test in road use, I feel. And, that difference is mainly due to the brilliant chassis & suspension on the R15 - not the brakes or tyres.

            My opinion:
            1) If you need comfort, leave the P220 aside.
            2) If you are lazy, leave the R15 aside.

The R15 needs you to work. And needs you to keep it in the power band instead of simply jacking up all the six gears ASAP. Having read your posts in the forum so far, I guess you should have got the point by now.

As such, ride both the bikes before you decide. There is a chance that you might swing away from both the bikes due to various reasons. Better swing away before you buy.

I had a short test ride on a R15.The riding stance does take a bit of getting used to. The experience wasnt good considering I was riding on a very crowded road. The sudden switch from a normal bike to a faired one did leave me confused over how good and practical would an R15 be in eveyday situations.
Plus the looking funny part. My sister laughed her head off when she saw me on the R15.

Shouldnt two discs stop better than than a disc-drum?He he.Just kidding.
You cant imagine how much I adore the ZMA R. I hated the bike once. But very recently rode a friend's ZMA which to put it lightly, was in the worst state of repair after going through numerous accidents.
I was stunned by how smooth the bike was, even in this state. The gear shifts were hard but the bike felt super smooth and super stable.I wonder how it would feel like if I had owned it.
              The engine's a gem. I LOVE IT.
But the thing about the ZMA is,you will have to explain it all the time. Explain about why you bought a 7 year old bike.
That said, barring my Gladiator, the ZMA is the best bike I have ridden till date(And I have ridden a lot of them). I might go for it,if I fail to decide between either of the two.
I dont like the styling of ZMR so that's out.

The problem with the Pulsar(or as matter of fact, most Bajaj bikes is). They seem good only if you haven't ridden something from the competition. I have defended Bajaj's forte on this very forum numerous times. But that doesnt change things.
I have two bikes in my stable. The Discover is more fun and thrilling and subsequently more practical to ride but the Gladiator is just better even though it has it's flaws. It's more balanced, more poised, more refined. The discs are fearsome, the riding stance is excellent, the looks are gorgeous. I could go on and on.
Both the bikes are good in their own way. I cant/wont choose between either of them. But the problem is,I have to choose one this time. Either the Yammy or the Pulsie.
I might have to try and manage a test ride of the P200F. I guess that should sort things out. Still wanted to know what you all think.
I hope you understand that I want a 'safe' bike. Not a fast one.

P.S.: Pardon me in case I come across as quite opinionated somewhere. It's one of my folly among others.

I have. But I cruise at 50-60 most of the time, which I think you will agree is the vibe zone in the RTR. It will be a step back from the Gladiator in terms of comfort.

Well i have owned a 220 Fi and now I have a 220 F. All I would say is test ride it and do that on a road where you can cruise but just try to be on a type of road you mentioned in your first post. I am slim 5.10 and have been riding the 220 with all the happiness. I have rode the R15 now thats a very nice bike with all the technical advantages, but somehow I feel might not be that comfortable for a 50 kms ride daily. I ride almost 60 kms every day to work and back, and trust me I love the 220 in traffic and the open highway as well.

The only reason i bought a second 220 was becase of its ruggedness and the ability to manage the biggest highways with ease. With all due respect to the R 15 i feel it might a bit on the lighter and the smaller side when it comes to highways with hard winds personal opinion though. Also the 220 would save you atleast 20 thousand rupees.....

Frankly speaking, I dint found 220's rear disc any better than ZMA's drum, both are none the less same. My ZMA-R runs with a sport demon at rear & I say it stops where a P220 will also stop

Then i'd simply suggest R15, the best in India right now, a perfect tool. It'll simply leave any bike behind, though it takes it own time, but it got the max speed, even more than P220.
I'v seen R15 going around 150kmph myself (I wasnt riding though)
Only thing is it got no torque.

P220, again i'll say it got the max torque out there, but you'll crib later about quality n comfort.

                        Over to you.

With all due respect to the ZMA and irrespective of what tyres it is running I dont believe and accept that the 220 rear disk and the ZMA drum can be the same. Not at all I can bet that to anyone for that matter i would say a brand new ZMA rear brake is nowhere close to the 220 rear disk break which has done a couple of thousand.

If anyone has a different thought they are free to ride my 220 F and it will prove the point. No offence to you spidey at all its just that facts are facts . PEACE

The R15 has a huge speedo error and even with the race kit it does not exceed the 220 in top speed at all. I have done 156 on the speedo recently...

Again no intentions to start any brand war here or no disrespect to any bike or person just sheer facts about the 220 which are often washed away by misinformation. Espescially the 2010 model of the 220 F has all the issues sorted and quality is also better. It might not be as good as the Japanese bikes but it sure is something worth a buy. Finally its definately male....
