Follow the Ninja250R thread to see what I mean. Even Jakrap 'pioneer' in Ninja offroading has had the same sort of issues.

His is a pulsar 220 which wieght wise is not heavily front biased. He will need the rear brake for effective stopping when braking in a straight line.

Tell that to Antz.Bin, he is the one suggesting DesertFox that the Ninja can take offroading !

    1. You are scratching your nose with your right hand (inserting the hand inside the helmet through the opened visor) and a dog jumps in front. You urgently have to brake just to slow down. What do you do?

DONT USE THE REAR BRAKE IN SUCH A SITUATION. YOU WILL LOCK YOUR REAR FOR SURE CAUSE YOU WILL PANIC BRAKE. Rear brake cannot take any panic braking EVER . ITS A DOG JUMPING IN FRONT OF YOU. All you can do here is pray since your right hand of all was busy scratching your nose...using the rear brake is the worst thing u can do.

    2. You feel like sneezing while riding your bike and your right hand involuntarily comes towards the helmet. During the sneeze, your eyes close momentarily and you feel like pulling over to the left to recover during the sneeze + eyes closed moment. What do you do to slow down?
Its a sneeze...it will last only for a second. If you do have to sneeze on a motorcycle it is best for you to take both your hands of the bars. No sneeze input should be let into the bars whatsoever. So take both hands slightly off the bar and get over the sneeze in a second. No need to pullover hence no need to brake. Your hands need not cover your face while sneezing when on a motorcycle. Take them off just slightly off the bars.

    3. You are hand-signalling a right while closing in to a right turn behind a car. The car brakes, but you cannot(as your right hand was not on the handlebar).

Taking your right hand off the throttle is a noob mistake. All the international hand singnals for a motorcycle are done with left hand for a reason. The right hand should never be off the throttle EVER.

    4. You have to cold-start a carburrated Self-start-only bike on an uphill incline without over-working your right hand. How do you stop it from rolling backwards.
how is cold starting a bike = over working the right hand ?
the only reason why you should get your rear brake fixed is because you have to use the rear if you intend to stop the 220 in the shortest possible distance (rear in conjunction with your front and not the rear alone) and you wont have to worry much about locking the rear wheel like on a Ninja because its the 220 which is not a forward biased bike. Anything else is a reason pulled outta nothingness.

To be honest, I have faced two somewhat major issues on the Ninja.

          1. With the battery dying out near Kolhapur, after I drove it all along NH4. That was attributed to a faulty battery.

          2. The second issue with the red hot exhaust also happened after I had ridden it for about 600 kms along long smooth road - NH4. This was attributed to water entering due to heavy rains.

I wasnt making a point to you or to Antz.bin (he knows full well Ninja is not meant for bad/bumpy roads let alone offroading), it was a general statement.

I have never off-road-ed on the Ninja. Bad roads, not off the road.

            .
Agree - the Ninja is an urban bike and that is where it belongs!

But the problem is that even in 'proper' cities, the kind of slush that gets kicked up during rains is not funny - pretty much equal to riding your bike on trails in the US. I just came back from Ooty and there was an unbelievable amount of muck accumulated on my bike even though I did not stray from the 'roads'. Same for Bengaluru - rain means your Ninja is going to end up looking like a motocross bike - and as if Ryan Dungey had a go on it!

During my travels out of India, I often wonder why India is so dusty and slushy. I have been to a lot of other countries and I don't see so much muck anywhere - is the composition of the soil?

That reminds me of a off road ride at a place named Yana (Near Sirsi) in North Canara, Karnataka. It is a hilly, slushy and it was during monsoon time. I was riding Hero Honda Gold (This model was a limited edition) bike. It was an experience of a life time with more than 2 skids on the V pin curves. Well, this was 23 years back .. There were no roads at that time just a muddy trails .. I will share some of the snaps once I get through my archives. Maybe we can plan a trip there sometimes. >>

              • Anyways, all other reasons may be kiddish, the rear brake is but It is an essentially required item.

and @ anybody telling us to signal using the 'clutch' hand, please go over to Pune RTO and update your 'Riding In India' skills. The reason why Indians signal with their right hand and Germans and Americans use their left as these people ride/drive on different sides of the road. This is something we have to live with in India and signalling with your right hand is not a noobish mistake.

& Thank you Ten Hut for acknowledging that I do in fact need the rear brake to stop effectively on my 'Commuter Bike'.

P.S.: Dog example was a bad one. Picture red signal straight but not too close ahead.
P.P.S.: I could'nt sneeze today while riding and stopped it midway as I was worried about losing control.
P.P.P.S.: Hyperion is not out to ruin his Ninja. He doesnt ride drunk. And the pic#2 (Non hyperion Ninja) was taken on a well paved pothole-less tarmac in Shimla.(which was covered in snow) You may start on good roads and end up like this. This particular picture was taken n 2nd day of the Ninja's ownership by its owner with the odo reading 600odd. People do buy the Ninja to tour and there is nothing wrong in somebody doing exactly that.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Riding/driving on different sides of the road has nothing to do with motorcyling and the fact that the throttle hand should never be on anything but on THROTTLE !
Germans and Americans, what ? Even the british will teach you the same and they are right hand driven ! Australians or any other Commonwealth country will tell you not to use your throttle hand for anything else. They too are right hand driven like you and I in India !
I aint drilling this fact into your head so dont get aggressive. If you feel comfortable doing it do it...it will help you become that much safer. If you think India and all the indians in it are an exception to the universally accepted rules then so be it.
And take it in the right stride mate. I wasnt belittling anyone when i said Pulsar will requiere both brakes to brake effectively. A 10 lakhs Harley or any bike with less front weight bias will also have the same sort of braking. I was categroizing the 220 in that class and not in commuter class. Jeez talk about being sensitive !

P.P.P.S.: Hyperion is not out to ruin his Ninja. He doesnt ride drunk. Why dont you put some more words into my mouth..who said Ninja shouldnt tour ? ! I too initially had bought my bike for touring but ended up liking sports riding. I was contemplating buying a Bullet prior to buying the Ninja. So you are telling me that ppl do with Ninja what I essentially did myself. I toured from Pune to Chennai 3 months into buying the bike.
I too landed up with a screwed patch on NH17 Chitradurga (?)onwards.
So its clear to me that you cannot avoid bad pacthes. But to set out for them thinking the bike will take it is the only school of thought I am contesting. The Ninja doesnt take abuse well because its not meant for it. As Bluevolt appropriately put, even riding it on urban roads in rains in our country doesnt go down well with the bike. And I contested that because you posted a pic of Ninja doing it and were on the lines " he did it...you can too" to DesertFox.

I dont know if RTO teaches you to take your right hand off the bar if you feel like ! Heck isnt it the same RTO that believes in the Saree Gaurd and the front number plate to be safe on the bike ?

Yes .. thats what I meant. I also meant that in case people want to go corner-hunting, they should do it on a Ninja or R15 or something similar (short handlebar, sporty stance etc etc). Of course Lavasa isnt for ripping on straights.
