Hi thank you for your response . i am confirming ride on 29th may 2011 (sunday). following are the details.

Date : 29th May 2011
Meeting place : Chandni chowk
Meeting Time : 6 AM
Departure : 6.30am
Destination : RK's , Lonavala

Helpo..to Goa

Guide me to a better way to GOA...

Google tells me, there are 3 ways from Pune

Route No 1) NH17 -- via khed - Chiplun - Hathkhamba - Nandgao etc
Longest of the lot @ 530kms but lowest time consuming acc to Google

Route No 2) NH4 & NH17 -- via Satara -- Kolhapur --Kudal etc
Total dist 482 km

Route No 3) NH4 -- Satara -- Kolhapur --Belgaum etc
Shortest of the lot @ 460km but most time consuming


I remember the now-married Satyen guiding me about these routes a year back:
He said one was more scenic while the other one was faster

However I forgot which one was the faster

I would leave at around 1pm

At what time shall I expect to reach Goa...
Since it would involve a bit of night driving, I would prefer the faster & better route on the onwards journey and the more scenic while returning....

Google got it all wrong here. The fastest to slowest route is in the order #3(fastest), #2, #1(slowest)

#3 will be fastest because it is all 4-lane NH4 all the way till belgaum. (Shimpul )

^^ Picture taken at the last toll gate before you reach Belgaum.. Its all 4-lanes till then.

#1 will be the most scenic as it mostly involves twisting route of NH17.

#2 is a good trade-off.. The ghat between kolhapur and Kudal is mesmerising to say the least...(during the rains )

So I guess because you are starting in the afternoon.. its better to stick to #3

Calculating with an average speed of 70 on the 4-lane, 50 on the 2-lane. #3 would take you anywhere around 8 hours( I suppose you are going in a car) But since there will be stops for lots of stuff in this drive, You would be lucky to make it before midnight.

kindly avoid NH17 --yes I am saying that -- It's nothing less than a killer highway moreso nowadays

The belgaum one is the fastest of the lot

also the newly laid tarmac on karwar route is superfantastic along with the twisties as well

Saad Since you are leaving at 1 pm, in that case i would not recommend you via amboli ghat as the ghat closes at 6 pm and night riding is a bit risky you see.

Other wise if you leaving early than ride straught till nippani and take the route via ajra--> ambolim --> sawantwadi and goa total distance from hinjewadi to panjimi is 452 kms.

I also trust Google a little less.....
Once I was stuck somewhere in Mumbai, it showed a way which was at least 30-40km longer, full of kachcha roads and contained 4-5 toll (5-10rs each)... while connecting to Mumbai Pune expressway...

I was also planing for Rt 3...Your nod makes it more convincing...
And since you are here.....I need one more help..
Does Nokia OVI Maps/Google maps have any provision to 'select' a route of our choice...on the cellphone like the computer version....?

Karwar route would fall in Route 3 correct..?

An average of 3-4 accidents daily on Nh17 -- many of them fatal--

The entire bloody route is now very dangerous especially with bus drivers & truck drivers overtaking blindly on turns without any regard to other motorists

back from goa last week in a car & it was harrowing especially during night

for goa destinations depends on how many days you spending & what's your agenda

If you are worried that your GPS will take you on the wrong route.. just dont start it before you reach the toll gate at Nippani. After that, your route depends pon where you eventually want to end up in Goa.

Commonly used routes:
Route 1: Pune - Mahabaleshwar - Poladpur - Khed - Chiplun - Ratnagiri - Sindhudurg - Goa. Lot of ghats and mostly NH17. A bit dangerous as said by DK, especially when night riding is involved. But scenic.

Route 2: Pune - Kolhapur - Nipani - turn right and leave NH4 - Amboli ghat via Ajra - You hit NH17 at Sawantwadi. Only one ghat on NH17 beyond Sawantwadi and then you enter Goa. 4 lane roads in most parts once crossing Goa border. Safer and Faster route. But since you are leaving at 1 pm Amboli ghat can be dangerous after dark.

Route 3: Pune - Kolhapur - Belgaum - Goa. Again a safer and faster route. But this way you enter directly in South Goa. So plan accommodation accordingly.

Not all but most POI can be done in 3 days in Goa(shortest trip that is).
Day 1 for North Goa.
Day 2 for South Goa
and Day 3 for shopping etc.

Some POI - Agonda beach in south goa. Pune bliss. Cabo de rama fort near Agonda. Amazing view from the fort. Mangashi and Nageshi - ancient temples. Colva beach for water sports and white sand. All these places are from south Goa.

Others from central and northern Goa are Old Goa churches - not to be missed, brilliant architecture. Res magoos fort(spelling not sure). Calangute, Mapusa, Vagator beach. Anjuna beach for night life. Dona paula, Mira mar - two beaches near Panjim.

for goa destinations depends on how many days you spending & what's your agenda

Well, first, I am 'just married'..........
Second its a 'family trip'. I would be accompanied by my parents...

However, I would not mind keeping '' these things in my knowledge plate for future trips...
