    The best part of a group ride is when u stick to the roles and rules. After sometime, following the rules becomes mechanical and no extra effort is needed and the ride becomes that much more enjoyable. U begin to rely on others, and other begin to rely on u too. This kind of bonding is essential in group activities.

    Else u can always ride solo anytime!

      Well put and true. Either I lead or sweep, I will just stick to that and it is done automatically.

            True! But not necessarily always. Depends on the mindset of the riders.

            Some groups of riders don't necessarily need to follow a set of rules. When you ride long enough and with the same set of people, you tend to understand their psyche and that just takes understanding to a whole new level.

            Not saying not to ride in formation. But riding in a formation is not necessarily the best way to ride every time. But definitely do agree there should set leaders and sweepers, the guys in the middle can shuffle among themselves.

              Strict application of rules is essential if you have inexperienced/unknown riders in the group. With a known group, its obvious that group bonding is already present and that you already know the other's mindsets and they know yours. Group dynamics change in those cases.

                Inexperienced riders and never riding with riders are two separate things!

                Agreed about formation rules when inexperienced riders are on board. But you cannot predict how unknown riders ride!

                The group dynamics may or maynot change then!

                Its always best (IMO) to have a loose set of rules to be followed for the first few times around. That way newer riders to the group don't feel stifled.

                Moreover its not always possible to follow rules strictly especially when there group of riders is large.
