Dude for FZ 40+ is assured. Most owners are reporting arnd 45 (run in period). Yes, there are few folks who reported 50+ too. If any of the FZ owners have completed the run in they should be giving exact figures under normal riding conditions.

Hey if mileage is the prime concern for you then I suggest you go for RTR.

As far as claims by manufacturers go, Fz16 should give 45-50 kmpl and RTR 55-60. These should be under "standard test conditions".
But consider this - in your day-to-day usage and city riding conditions, FZ has an advantage due to more torque available at lower RPMs, which means you do not have to rev the crap out like in RTR to stay in power band or when you have pillion. Thats why most RTRs give a realistic milage of around 40.

If your friend is really working in Yamaha, you can confirm this better than anyone here

I just googled a bit about the mileage that can be expected from the FZ 16. And I was really astonished at the fluctuations. Mileage varies from 26 kmpl to 6x kmpl (zigwheels.com). How come there is such a fluctuation? I even came across a mail from the Yamaha East Zone head that "50+ kmpl mileage can be expected when you use higher octane petrol". And this fact has been contorted by the local dealers to increase sales. None of the dealers I interacted with said a thing about high octane petrol.

I had been waiting for the RTR Fi, but due to problems at the dealer end, no Fi bikes are going to be released in Orissa shortly. I have waited too long. And now, the choice is between the RTR Refresh and the FZ 16. My personal preferences are almost equal for both the bikes. Now, the only deciding factor is the mileage. I understand all those rants about power and performance, but for someone who is not earning yet, lesser mileage would mean lesser roaming around.... Hope you folks understand..
my bike is giving me 40 kmpl before the first service itself......preety decent enough
i will say go for fz compared to the rtr
