Default Planning for Kanyakumari to Kashmir (K2K) trip in March - advise required

Hello xBhpians,

10 of us are planning to take a Kanyakumari to Kashmir (K2K) ride in March. We are from Pune and not regular bikers but want to see India on bikes and spread the message of "Follow your dreams".

I have been reading the various threads from xBhp and found them really helpful. However could not find any thread particular to K2K.

Need following help/information:

1. We need to take our bikes (6-7 Royal Enfields) to Kanyakumari. Any suggestion how we could do this?

2. What would be the ideal duration for this trip (considering that none of us are regular long distance bikers)?

3. What would be the route for the trip. On an average how much distance should we cover each day?

4. What permissions are required for long distance(inter-state) biking?

5. Do you think it will be necessary to have along with us a luggage van (am not sure if we could carry all luggage on bikes) and a mechanic along with us.

6. What is best place to buy the riding gear in Pune.

7. Any other thing you think which we need to consider.

Please forgive me if my questions seem too naive since this is going to be my first long ride...

Thanks a lot.

is very tough considering the road conditions + the amount of distance you've covered on previous 2 days with a large group unless you guys are on endurance ride!!!

Hello,
As I mentioned earlier, we are not experienced riders, so prepared the route using google maps and another blog written by some one who did K2K ride.

This is not a fixed plan but to start with we needed something to check what could be the possibilities.

Waiting for more comments and suggestions.

Try maps from MapmyIndia.com Online maps, GPS Navigation, Driving Directions, Local Search . The duration of the distance covered shown in mapmyindia is related to the road conditions of that route(and detailed info. on ATMs, bunks and relevant necessities).

You can load your bikes on train from Pune for Kanyakumari. If you travel in the same train, it is called as luggage. Otherwise, it is called as parcel. The approx. rate would be Rs.1700. You would need to remove all fuel, get it packed (can be done at platform itself) and send it across.

If it is luggage, you can get immediate delivery at kanyakumari train station at any time. If it is parcel, you can take delivery only during parcel office timing.

Pl remember that 1% insurance is charged on the declared value of your bike. Higher the declared amount, higher the freight.

None. Just carry all documents with you.

If you are riding 2 up on each bike, you may consider a luggage van. But actually it is not really required (unless you are finicky about your clothing)

If you feel that your bike would fail enroute, you can think of taking a mechanic with you but would he be carrying all his workshop tools with him?

Then my strong suggestion is to gain experience with several short rides starting from 50Km all way upto 500 Km on a single day & then reconsider the K2K.

Thanks for the answers.

Yes we are planning for short trips before. We want to take this as an endurance ride. Three of us did Pune-Kanyakumari on bi-cycles last year, so we have little experience of the endurance rides.

Will reconsider my route based on mapmyindia information.

Is Kanyakumari - Banglore - Pune route better than Kanyakumari - Cochin - Goa - Pune route ?
