It makes sense only if:

a. You want to just stick on the main road
b. You want to travel in the largest bhajan mandali known
c. You just go by low costs.

a. You can do the full circuit yourself in 17 days
b. You can go with likeminded friends and have a whale of a time
c. YHAI Giving petrol costs is really attractive but its better to go directly even at higher costs

Well thought i just add some inputs here on going to Leh .
First avoid medication , i know maybe its unavoidable and i personally have gone through the agony twice but last year i did the entire stretch without diomox and stayed at pang also .
Rule of thumb is same here climb slowly and let ur body adapt . in 2007 we had to go back from pang because few of the riders were hit by AMS and they were taken back and we went ahead .so keep it as precaution.

Last year there were incidents wherein one of the fellow rider collapsed because he went too fast and there was lack of oxygen to his brain thankfully just before sarchu there was a army check post and guy was given oxygen .

And people who are doing in June avoid doing pongong-soo in the same day and even if you are doing ensure that you come back before 3 PM to the last check post else all the water crossings are flooded ,last year we were struck there for one night and went back to army camp for the night . infact right infront of us we saw one scorpio been washed into the valley so its pretty bad sometimes .

Dont ride to glory let other glorify your name .

We dont buy that. all websites say that and even docs say one should take a diomax at Manali. thats it. just one. Plus ofcourse lots of water!

I think you are referring to the Pagal nullah that comes around 15-20km before Pangong Tso. Last heard, an alternate road was being made in 2008. Lets hope its up this year

@kevinmaveric: Everyone has his/her own metabolism, you yourself say you've suffered twice and last year you didnt

Paagal nullah is 4 kms before Pangong, and is should be crossed by 2 unless you plan on staying there. Having said that pangong is doable in a one day. The key is time your ride well, leave early. I did it in a day last year.

But cross changla by 5-5:30 lest you'll be stopped near the check post before chang-la

@groupbhp: No alternative route was being made, of all I saw.

Kurtrules/groupbhp –last time – thts 2008 we were standing at rohtang top at 5:45 and reached keylong some 11 – 11:30 in night and ya all this while we made a pit stop in manali to buy stuff and stayed for the night also since we stayed in keylong the adaptability was done for the body .
And ya its not pagal nalla that you referring to – pagal nalla is after you cross darcha and before keylong . but try pagal nalla once in night , its quite a adrenaline when you pass through the water crossing that has taken the maximum lives till leh .
Pangong Tso well ya you can do it and infact it better to do it in one day or do marsmikla along with it in 2 day(just incase if you want to try ). we did pangong tso before in one day but just saying that as precaution since last time there was chaos happened when suddenly all army air traffic men are looking for lost rider in the valley due to heavy water flow in most of the water crossing and there was rain and suddenly snow fall also at chang la .
Honestly we were not ready to stay in pang since iam sure everyone suggest that cross pang and reach leh else AMS is a sure hit but i guess due to number of pit stops we did last year it was quite interesting to see how well your body adapted .

Well will be doing again this year but since we have few more places in list where the approximate height is definitely a concern so maybe i also would have to reconsider my option of not taking Diomox .
It almost like i want to do Everest without oxygen mask .
I know i might be talking some crazy but breathing himalyas with little pain is a different rush you get and trust me i become a kid .

Sure they say - if you research a bit you will understand what Diomax does really , nothing but accelerates your heart a bit more giving the required blood and oxygen for your body .
Iam not sure if there were any roads last year infact we checked with a local police guy at darcha but he did not say anything like that but will try this time for sure if there are any roads or if you have anything on it , do let me know .

Go ahead pal nobody is stopping you from not taking the pill. It is just a suggestion that you can give time to your body to adapt naturally rather than hopelessly relying on the medications which is never a good idea.

And mind you they suggest to take luke warm water all the time and there is a reason behind it. The army doctor told us that the cold water makes the things worse.
Long back OldFox gave a nice explanation as to why luke warm water helps in fighting AMS. I'll try looking for it and post it as soon as I find it.

Found a link which tells about Diamox.
Diamox (acetazolamide) medical facts from Drugs.com
PS: Just read the side effects of the medicine too

Quote:
What should I avoid while taking Diamox (acetazolamide)?

Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Acetazolamide may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Acetazolamide may increase the sensitivity of your skin to sunlight. Use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when exposure to the sun is unavoidable.

kevin, there is a very thin line between bravery and foolishness! I hope I am clear

And yes, the nullah before Pangong is called the paagal nullah!
