Bikers
Please help me decide between Suzuki GS150 and Yamaha SZ R. I have been riding the Hero Honda Ambition 135 for close to 55,000 KMs now. Even though it is in sparkling condition even today, its showing its signs of aging. The fuel efficiency has come down from 50-55 to around 40ish. I can easily feel the lack of top end power when I want to zip through. Also, no electric start is kind of pre-historic now. My requirements are as follows: 1) Comfort: I will be riding the bike mostly alone, but the pillion rider should also be in a very comfortable position. Especially hopping on and off should be easy. 2) Fuel Efficiency: Anything around 50 would do. 3) Riding conditions: Purely city driving. No highway runs. I have my car for the highways. 4) Ownership cost: The cost of spares, services and overall A.S.S. should be good enough. I am pretty satisfied with the way Hero Honda works. So we can benchmark it there. So any company which does even 0.5% better is game. 5) Price: Max 65-70K. Many of you must be wondering why no Bajaj or Honda in the choices. Well, I DO NOT want a Bajaj bike. I have driven all of them and nothing has ever impressed me, not even the P220. I would prefer the Karizma over the P220 anyday. Honda Unicorn is also a bike which suits my requirements pretty well, except for the pillion seat. The pillion seat height is way too much and my wife will have hard time hopping on and off. Out of the 2 choices, I have gathered a lot of information about Suzuki GS150. Its technologically pretty good with 6 speed box and good looks. Not much idea about the Yamaha SZ R, since its comparatively pretty new. So please shoot guys. |

The GS150R is no fun in the city. Its heavy (heaviest in 150cc segment, almost 150kg). Also taking quick turns (read twisting and turning in traffic) aren't that easy on this bike.
ASS probably varies from place to place but the general opinion is that suzuki ASS sucks. I've no idea about the pillion seat of the SZ-R but definitely suits the other 4 requirements.

I own a GS!
I guess you've not seen the GS, so my opinion is that since you are talking about easy hop on and off for your wife, if you buy the GS then your wife will be highly disappointed because the pillion seat is very very into 3 very high. Regarding mileage and power, GS is too good but as the above fellow rider said, its too heavy for the city.. I guess you should not think about the GS anymore ! CBZ Extreme for u all the way :-) Think about it mate.. |

I own a GS150 R. The following is my reply.
1) Comfort: I will be riding the bike mostly alone, but the pillion rider should also be in a very comfortable position. Especially hopping on and off should be easy. For the pillion to get over the bike is not that easy especially for ladies. 2) Fuel Efficiency: Anything around 50 would do. Yes GS can provide fuel efficiency of 50-55 3) Riding conditions: Purely city driving. No highway runs. I have my car for the highways. City driving is little bit hectic due to weight but you will get used to it. 4) Ownership cost: The cost of spares, services and overall A.S.S. should be good enough. I am pretty satisfied with the way Hero Honda works. So we can benchmark it there. So any company which does even 0.5% better is game. A.S.S of suzuki is good no problem for me till now. |

Thanks a lot sanjukoli12, chiragwarm, eliksir.
Points noted. GS seems out of contention then. I liked the GS for its technology, but then pillion position is also important for me. Infact, I checked GS's height with Unicorn's and found Unicorn's pillion position higher than GS'. Will check SZ R in flesh and will update my experience. |

You live more in five minutes on a bike like this
|
GS would be heavy, 6 gears will be too much to change in the city. but it is fuel efficient (provided you ride in the right gear) and strong built
SZ is simple straight smooth durable motor, nice for city but reasonable for highways, 50+ mileage i guess (lacking in case of a yamaha !) |

Why haven't you considered the HH Hunk? The latest one looks cool and has all the goodies. I have heard that it is very comfortable too both for the rider and the pillion.
Give it a thought. Also, I would personally like to go with the Pulsar 150. That is a neat bike which meets all your requirements. I don't know what you have against Bajaj. |

Thanks everyone for the response.
@cmahajan: As I had clearly mentioned, no BAJAJ for me. Strictly no. There are 2 companies in India whose vehicles will never be able to get my attention; Bajaj in 2 wheelers and Maruti in cars. Looks like the overall inclination is towards Yamaha SZ. Now experts, lets move on to the next level. Which one of the 3 are best to go with: 1) SZ R 2) SZ X 3) SZ |
