Default P220 or ZMA-R

Hi all,

I am confused whether to buy P220 or ZMA-R ?

Way back in '07 when P220 was released, I was not ready for 2 months waiting period and went ahead and bought the ZMA.
It was a no nonsense bike and never ever troubled me except once when there was some issue with gear shift and was replaced. I rode it for 15k kms before I sold. Since I am a tourer and will be traveling around frequently, I just wanted to know the reliability of P220 since there were many issues that were posted in old P220 thread.

I was mulling on R-15 or P220 or thunderbird. I took off the tb out of the list due to the maintenance it requires. R-15 is not ideal for touring esp. with the stiff suspension. So, I am left with P220 and ZMA as the final options. Please pour in your advise.

Thanks,

Krishna

Regarding the reliability, as you have experienced, Zma is a no-nonsense bike. Excellent for touring. The lot of P220s now are reliable than the initial lots, but still we do not know how the bike behaves after two years. Long-term reliability is yet to be established. Decide and take a plunge.

Maybe there is an upgrade for P220 soon. Wait for that.

Am sure you are aware of the pro's and con's of both the bikes!

I'll just answer your question on reliability. Simply putting it, the 220 of today is loads more reliable than it was when it was launched. But still its not yet as reliable as the ZMA.

I can assure you the 220 of today is reliable enough not to leave you stranded on a highway!

Rest, its entirely your take.

PS: Why did you sell the ZMA?

Thanks for your advise ravi. I remember my zma looking at your userpic

Praful,

I had to move abroad and no one at home were ready to maintain the bike. So, decided to sell it off. I would've got the p220 if the waiting period was not that long in '07.

Krishna

Krishna,

I would suggest you test ride a P220 and feel the difference between the bikes. The pulsar is more edgy and viby but the ZMA has a very relaxed engine. You have already owned a ZMA, so there would no need to test ride the new one.
As Praful said, the current 220 has been recitified alot from the first batches and it is definitely better than before, but still not as much reliable as a ZMA. It just acts wierd at times.
Waiting for a P220 upgrade is chasing the wind. Bajaj has not confirmed it and it might not come at all. But then again, they might just release an upgrade suddenly. Personally, I would not wait for it unless there is some concrete info.
One thing is definitely sure though. The ZMA is a much better tourer than a P220. It is relaxed and eats up miles without you knowing it. I own a p220 and having ridden both over long streches, I definitely cannot say the same for the P220.

Since you are a tourer and you will be traveling frequently, ZMA is the bike for you. It's there for a long time and it is extensively tested. My ZMA has never given me trouble in the highway. It is also 10K cheaper than the P220.
But again, since you already owned a ZMA you can go for P220 as well.

You had a ZMA-R ... you sold it ? And you want to buy another one now ?

Irrespective of that, I would suggest ZMA-R. Its a no-brainer. You have used it for a while, you know how good it its, you have done your research you know where the p220 stands.
