Re: Royal Enfield Continental GT Review

Finally ended up buying the Continental GT yesterday and my dreams have turned in to my worst nightmare.

In less than 24 hrs of riding the bike the low battery voltage light and the malfunctioning indicator light have started glowing continuously. Can someone please explain what could possible be wrong with the bike so that i can instruct the service center personnel tomorrow. I am very sceptical that they are competent enough to resolve the issue on their own.

Probably some short circuit. Ask them to check the wiring..

Thanks. Forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question but could a short circuit result in both the lights (malfunction and battery low voltage) glowing?

Yes. There are possibilities. I am not saying it is the reason, but it could be. Some wires might be touching each other. Otherwise, are the electricals functioning normally?

Yes most of the electricals are fine however the battery does not seem to be charging as the bike stops at times when idle and then its a pain to start the bike again.

Get the Electricals checked. Get the battery ratings checked when the bike is turned off, when the bike is in idle speed and when revved to 3000 RPM.. ask the RE ASC to get the ratings checked with another bike and compare..

In ZMR, the battery ratings will reach its peak of ~14.xx V at 3000 RPM showing that the battery is getting charged.. my bike had to be revved to 8200 RPM to get the battery to charge upto 12.75 V.. the battery ratings were 12.35 V with engine off, 12.5V when idling. clearly showing an issue with the Stator Plate.. when checked a passion charging capacity, it was able to charge the battery at its when very little throttle was given..

If the Charging is fine and if the headlight bulb goes kaput often, then the RR unit is at fault..

If both the scenarios are normal, then the battery is to be blamed..

this was a manufacturing defect that I had and was not taken care by the ASC during warranty period inspite of telling them repeatedly. Had to shell out 2000/- from my pocket after 4 years of having the problem..

I am a noob too. But hope this helps.

              Cheers,

If all the offerings from the companies you listed were in the same price range as the Continental GT, I would have agreed with you. But you are comparing the Continental GT which costs 2.2 lacs on road (Bangalore) to the HD 750 which is ~Rs 4.9 lacs and Triumph's offerings (Bonnie at ~7.5 lacs plus?) and Indian's Scout (~ 13 lacs plus?) and expect equal performance (as compared to the "super duper engines") which is rather baffling. The answer to your question lies in the old saying - You get what you paid for.

The low battery indicator has a life of it's own and will come on if you use the headlights for a period of time. Has the SVC resolved your issues?

Does this come with ABS? I feel it is essential for a bike of this capacity.

@neil.jericho there is black which is going to be out in the GT.
                    Thought you must be intrested
Have been following your thread on Tbhp regarding the updates on your GT.
Seems that the black ones are for export (they have the round indicators against the rectangular ones for india, the big numberplate and last the mirrors which come on the indian models).
I personally prefer the yellow. Just booked one.

I have got mine and munched in around 500kms in 3 weeks. Awesome bike. But you need to get a hang of it before you decide if you like it or not. Initially i did not like the bike on my first test ride but when i got the bike for 3 days, spend good time riding it in the city as well as the highways. The torque is amazing, brakes superb, the riding position may seem a little difficult to adjust to but as you keep riding it seems fine. Few pics of my ride !

Have a test ride and decide, and dont forget to take them on the open roads to guage the performance.
The GT has a very large turning radius.

I am considerring to buy GT, but I have seen that Royal enfields are costly to maintain. I own a yamaha fz16 now, and its been 1.5 years, no issues, no break down , no vibration till top end, literally no maintenance cost except regular check up. So considering my this experience with yamaha i am little concerned if I will get same quality and maintenance free experience in continental GT.. Please help. I need a tourer . Also I am waiting for R25 to get launched in India..

Has anybody experienced any issues with the speedometer & tachometer vibrating at certain RPMs? Vibrates with a sharp noise at around 3000 RPM but stops the moment I place my hand on it.

I had the service center take a look at it and the response I got was "Sir, there's nothing we can do. In fact you should take a look at how the Thunderbird's vibrates."

Are the vibrations due to resonance or could there be another reason?
