  • Which ISP is the best ?

    Hello guys.

I wish to change my INTERNET service provider, from last 5 to 6 years i am using Hathway Cable internet.
Initially it was amazing, but recently the service has gone down drastically, I do not even receive my bill, and they end up temporarily disconnecting my service due to non-payment of the same.

Every month i need to call them up and ask for my bill amount so that i can pay.

sadly recently from last 6 months I've been having this problem of Frequent disconnections, everyday i stay disconnected for hours, whenever i call them up they give me the same old area problem reply.

I've written several e-mails to the Head Office and all these problems were temporarily solved too.
but its still there, and still the same.

Recently they've put up this fair usage policy which decreases my speed to 1/2 if i download more than 10GB a month.

All this is really pissing me off.

I did a small survey about other ISP's across mumbai, everyone has loopholes somewhere or the other.
All i need is GREAT service and an always ON connection (the one that doesn't need me to connect everytime i start the system).
other ISP users please let me know personally your isp experience.

This is the same case with most other ISP providers accross mumbai and navi mumbai. We have 5net, 24 onoline and Sify all of whom are sucky with their customer service. Connectivity is an issue as well. Direct downloads are a strict no - no...only torrents ....

Admist this chaos though Reliance has emerged as a slightly better choice...better connectivity and reponsive customer service.they also provide some sort of LAN i have heard...

@nanotec--why don't you consider BSNL,it has some of the best plans...for 750 you can get 512kbps unlimited...
their service is crappy but once your line is set .//.you are set.....
i've been using UL750 from the last 4 or 5 months...no problems till now.

I would suggest Airtel. Though it comes at a premium compared to BSNL, I would say, NO issues till date in the past 3 years.

Yeah its true. I am using Worldnet for past one month and the net speed is slow. Forget about downloading anything from net. But the only thing which I like about it is we get LAN (DC). So anything I need is available on LAN and the download speed is simply amazing.

Check in your area if anyone provides LAN. If yes then go for it. I am sure you wont regret the decision.

I second that. But ceasar are you sure that its 512kbps & not 256kbps?? Because right now am using that plan (750 plus) from past 1 year. It has no phone rent & unlimited downloading but speed is 256kbps only.

I don't wish to have LAN
i need a really great service.
mtnl/bsnl are dial up, aren't very reliable.
i need an always ON connection, which needs no additional software like 24client or something like that, or a general dialer.

any more info about reliance and airtel, being big companies i think they'll be good at their service.
                Tata is real crappy.

right now i pay 566 bucks for 512kbps, which reduces to 256 after 10gig of download.

They have a offer going on where you pay 4500 for 6 months and get unlimited downloads.Comes to around 750 bucks per month.

Other the normal price is 1400 bucks for it AFAIK.

Check this out for more information.

Hmm well it is costly than the current plan am using.

@All:- Any tips on increasing the downloading speed of torrents?? Although my specified speed is 256kbps the max download speed i have achieved is 100kbps only even after closing all the applications except torrent.

@TS:- Dude trust me the bsnl is way too ahead in speed & economy. The probs you face on it are far less than others.

i understand, but isn't it a dial up connection ??
i need an always ON connection.

I've done my CCNA, and i understand how ISPs and related things work.
the main aim is not basically to have a good value for money package from any service provider.
I need a great service from any provider who can give me an unlimited 512kbps connection (which should run 24X7 without any restarts and disconnections).

I use a wifi bridge to give connection to all the wifi devices at my place using a standalone wired connection for PC, if i use dial up, i won't be able to do that.
i am using 8 different ip addresses from a single port secured IP using sub-netting.
if i use a dial up, this won't be possible.

i hope you guys understand what i mean, however its very helpful of you madhav to let me know that BSNL is this good when it comes to speed.
If there's no other option, i might go for BSNL (but my bridge as well as any router won't work)

It is an always ON PPPOE connection...its not a dial-up...things have changed in bsnl, however if you anyhow want to have dial-up then you can always change the modem settings and have a dialup connection in bridge mode.

trust me if you want 24Hrs 55~65kBps speed than you'll have it,just make sure to check your neighbor's(if they have a BSNL connex) SNR and Line ATTenuation just to make sure the quality of the line is good.
