• Re: An INTRO to Locomotives..Steam /Diesel Electric / Electric.

The first of 1 000 Evolution Series diesel locomotives which GE Transportation is to supply to Indian Railways over 10 years was unveiled at the manufacturer’s plant at Erie in the USA on June 1.
GE Transportation is to supply 700 locos of 4 500 hp and 300 of 6 000 hp under a US$2·6bn joint venture agreement signed with the Ministry of Railways in November 2015, the largest contract ever won by GE in India. They will have Tier 1 GEVO engines.
The first 100 of the twin-cab 1 676 mm gauge locos locomotives are to be exported from the USA complete or in kit form. To meet the requirement for local production under the government’s Make in India programme, the other 900 are to produced with mainly Indian components at a factory which GE is building at Marhowra in Bihar. This is expected to be completed later this year, and will produce two locomotives per week for the current contract.
GE will also develop facilities at Roza in Uttar Pradesh and Gandhidham in Gujarat to support long-term maintenance of the fleet.
Source: Railway Gazette...

This contract surely means the end of the Old ALCO Diesel Locomotive Manufacturing/Refurbishing , and in fact is the end of the line for the ALCOs..
What Happened to the Steam Locomotives is going to Happen to the ALCO diesel Electric Locos. They are going to be junked and sold for scrap value...Sad day for the IR work horse..

The distance between the Cow Catcher and rail height is a bit large, and may allow objects to get under the Loco, and catcher itself is fragile. The flat front also exposes the loco Pilot to fatal collision injury in case of accident...It was for this reason that Bheem Loco of 5,500 HP developed by RDSO took some time in re-engineering to form buffer zone for Pilot safety...wonder what made IR change some of it's safety norms.

The first of the Evolution Series of Diesel Locomotives from GE EMD is now undergoing trials at the GE tracks testing Facility. Designated as WDG4G 49001
, the Loco is expected to be certified and ready for shipping by the end of September 2017.

Here is a Video of the Locomotive during trial runs at GE testing facility.

----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

A New coach called The Vista Dome with glass top and wide side windows is being introduced by Indian Railways. This is to be run in Routes with Scenic beauty to enhance the train passenger's experience with IR. This is also called a tourist coach as it is supposed to attract more tourist through glass all around construction.
The first run had already taken place on the 19th sep 2017 in the Dadar-Madgaon Janshatabdi Express .
Here is a video on the same...

and a ride Video..

Most of the time we enjoy train journey without much drama, with a smooth ride . We assume it is due to the straight and even rails. Contrary to our belief, the rails are uneven and joints are not good and clean. It is the suspension which takes care of all these vagaries and give us a smooth ride.
In fact the rails are as bad as the pot holed roads we travel in. The train wheels go through a really tough time keeping the wheels on the rails and at the same time taking care of the gross ups and downs of the track as well as the joints.
Here is a video of the Torture the Wheels and Suspension goes through during one such journey ..The video shows the undercarriage and the whole suspension with wheels .

psr sir, is there any issue with the post or with the attachments?

I cannot view any of the pics or the videos in the previous 2 posts of yours.

And a great thread with full of details about locos, I was lucky enough to go for an In-Plant training in Integral Coach Factory in Villivakkam during my college days and had a great time learning all the things(well most of the things actually) that goes into preparation of our railway coaches, from plain sheet metal to complete furnishing. I was also lucky enough to see Diesel Electrical Multiple Unit(DEMU) that were prepared at that time in ICF for Delhi(if i memory is right).

during that stage, I also got to know that they were working on coaches that was supposed to be exported to Malaysia. please give us few more details like what are we exporting to other countries.

your post is making me to rethink of those good times i had in that factory.

Good to see some reaction on the thread..Happy for you that you had a useful stint at ICF. They have the Broad gauge coach building unit, DEMU, and EMU building unit, away from this unit and a Unit specialising in AC build and service of existing coach. I had been through all of them ,in the course of my work. The Powered wheel assembly on the EMU is esp., very interesting.
Sorry to note you could not see the Videos of my posts. I use either Firefox or Chrome both version 48 (slightly old) since my posts here and elsewhere have to be compatible for others to see. Were you able to see the Pictures of the New WDG4G with serial no 49002 ? and only the Videos are not visible...please do revert so I can try to correct it..
Regarding Export, we do make the old type coaches of Narrow, Meter and Broad Gauge and export it...We export our old Meter gauge YDM series Locos to African countries, since we have switched mostly to Broad gauge. Ofcourse we do have narrow and meter gauge in the Northern sector...
We used to Import Stainless Steel Coaches from ABB called LHB , and started to manufacture them at ICF..but after Mamta became the Railway Minister for some time, the Manufacturing was shifted to West Bengal. and most orders go to them....Hope now the manufacturing comes back to ICF's able hands...whatever LHB coaches ICF produced were shifted to Northern Sectors ,and slowly we are getting a few.
I hope you noticed that the DEMU produced at ICF had Gensets as prime power producer. They use 3 or 4 Gensets depending on power required. Using Gensets in Locos was an out of the box revolutionary application, and many Positives were Achieved by it.
First of all when there is reduced power requirement., ie., Stationary idling ,or Cruising, only one Genset needs to be on. This saves a lot of Diesel .
Secondly The Gensets themselves had been tuned for running lean , ie., fuel efficient.
Thirdly even if one genset engine fails, the Loco can still operate at reduced power and reach destination.
The most important point of all is the Gensets can be run on Natural Gas , thus reducing emission and becomes very cheap to run...Currently DEMUs are BiFuel operated, saving environment and operating cost.

Hi Psr Sir,

for some reason am not able to view the pic/video in the last 2 post of yours, but the previous pic of the Loco's are visible just fine, My Chrome is "Version 58.0.3029.110".

I have checked the same in IE, there i got a pic saying corporate security policy, but interestingly IE is also showing 49002 Loco's pic without any issues.

do not know how this corporate security thing is working .

Integral Coach Factory Chennai had developed a 100% indigenous Stainless Steel Coach same as the LHB in all aspect. This is an initiative by ICF Make In India, and hope to manufacture 1,600 Coaches per year. The AC coaches due to it's higher Axle load will have wheels from Alstom while the normal coaches will be of 100% Indian parts . The first set of coaches have to undergo real time testing and Certification by the Railway Safety Board, after which the production will be in full swing. It should be noted that the Coach Factory at Kapurthala is still doing assembling only, and this effort by ICF is a Feather in it's cap confirming it's capability in development of Material, dies and Execution ...
Here is a video of the First batch of LHB from ICF..

The First of 800+ Electric Locos from Alstom had been delivered and undergoing trials . Designated WAG-12, this 12,000 HP engine is mainly for Freight trains of upto 6,000 Tons and a cruising speed of 100 Kmph. It's top speed is indicated as 120 Kmph .
The Loco has 8 Driven wheels ie., powered wheels. Alstom had agreed for a Technology transfer. Currently Alstom had also set up a plant in Soviet Union for the Loco manufacturing.

A shocking announcement had been made by the Railway Ministry that the Diesel Electric Locos will be taken off service and replaced by Electric Locos in the next 5 years to come. The Ministry claims that a saving of 11,500 crores per year can be made through this...I wonder how the generating and distribution cost had not been taken into account. It was already proven that if the cost of generation of power, and distribution, is taken into consideration, the Electric Locomotive is expensive to run and maintain. compared to the Diesel Electric...further if there were to be Power failures in sections, then the trains will be stranded , and may even lead to collision accidents. The Electrical Power Failure and Blackout in North India few years back just showed how this can happen..It was the Diesel Locos which brought the trains home , and enabled continuance of Train service thereafter without a hitch....

Hope someone with knowledge and conviction makes the Ministry aware of the set back in going full Electric in traction in India, due to the dicey generation and distribution prevalent throughout the country ..
