  • More and more Diesel Electric Multiple Units(DEMU) are being employed in India to take care of the increasing demand for Fast trains between cities.......

ICF had rolled out on 1st April 2013 a totally updated DEMU , with STAINLESS STEEL COACHES.....

    Salient Features are...

    1. The First Coach is also the Diesel electric Prime power.
    2. The DEMU is Powered by a 1,600 HP diesel power unit
    3. The Drive is 3 phase AC..AC..ie., the Diesel power unit generates 3 Phase AC which is used to drive 3 Phase AC motors..
    4. The Control is by 32 bit controller as used in WDP 4..Complete Control is DIGITAL.
    5. The TCC (Traction Control Circuit) unit employs IGBT technology for driving the Motors...same as Indigenously developed IGBT unit in WDP 4..This totally reduces Heat in driver circuitry and is > 80 % efficient.
    6. Control unit heads up display/Control Stand same as in WDP 4, with Digital display, and program.
    7. The Coaches are built completely from Stainless Steel...All Screws and Rivets heads etc., are chamfered, and are covered...so passengers will not get injured or clothing will get caught and torn on them.
    8. The Train Is Fitted with GPS, hence can be traced to it's position on track.....Equipping all of these trains ,with GPS allows for each train ,and controllers to know precisely where the train is on the track...
    9. Advanced Interface for Remote sensing and trouble shooting can be done through GPS/GPRS/CDMA...
    10. The train can do a top speed of 105 kmph...with 10 coaches....
    11. The Normal seating capacity is 756 passengers in 10 coaches...and approx., 2,000+ passengers standing...
    12. The Nose Cone of the DEMU is also made of pressed SS , giving it better strength and better protection to Loco Pilots.

Unfortunately this train is not going to see service in SR but most probably SCR..

Indian Rail expands train protection warning system

Southern Railway has planned to extend the train protection warning system (TPWS) currently installed in the Madras Beach-Central-Gummidipoondi EMU line to the 68km Beach-Arakkonam section. Under the project, 400 signals on the Beach-Arakkonam route will be linked up, all of which will interface with electronic beacons installed on the track. The TPWS system will be based on European rail traffic management system (ERTMS-Level 1) technology that will create a signalling loop to warn train drivers about the obstacles ahead, as well as control the speed in case of emergency. The system will also activate the train braking system automatically if the driver fails to notice the warning signs, and help regulate speed if a train is travelling too fast on the approach to certain speed restrictions. Southern Railway is currently testing the technology to make it suitable for Indian conditions and is planning to put in place a much better integrated signal system shortly. TPWS primarily offers additional safety in a fully automatic signal circuit and comprises on-board computer consoles or the Driver-Machine Interface. The system will be connected to wireless track-side balise devices that employ electromagnetic induction and can change the traffic light from green to red if a train is crossing a signal or is speeding. RITES has been asked to develop a more basic TPWS in order to expand the system to a wider level in the future and thus ensure safety of passengers.

          • Indian Railways are using Cummins Diesel Railways Engines in their DEMU......Cummins have ratings from 55 HP all the way to 5,200 HP engines..they are fuel efficient, confirming to Euro Pollution control norms, and have lesser maintenance turn around times..... here is a sample list of some of their engine models and HP ratings.....

Ther Indian Railways have started using the Cummins diesel engine type No: KTA 50 L for the 1,400 HP and KTA 50 for the 1,600 HP.....
Their Letter of Indent and Letter for periodic Yearly maintenance shows the cost to be high...for instance the first year total strip down rebuild of the Engine costs approximately 60,00,000/- and the second year cost is 64,00,000/- all inclusive.....A New ALCO engine capable of 3,300 HP costs Rs.1 crore only..........In fact Cummins Advice for a total engine overhaul, is not based on Kilometers run, but based on How many Gallons/liters of Diesel the engine had used...

For Example the QSK model engines have Modular Common Rail Fuel System(MCRS) with Ferrous Cast Ductile Iron Pistons, and engine rebuild is adviced once in 1.5~2.5 Million Liters of Diesel consumption..

It is ofcourse tedious, but how else will you get real life figures which will make sense in the end ? and without realtime figures, any exercise in exploring new venues will actually become a non-factual expression, built on assumptions, which will have a hundred variables....in short unreliable, non-repetitive data . When ever any new thing is attempted, it is best to quantify or record all datas ,which will then become the Backbone of Future endeavors.
If you read the volumes of Data that IR RDSO generates, it will be mind boggling....but the thoroughness is perfect...
For instant for The Latest 1,600 HP DEMU they had already calculated the 1 st and 2 nd year engine tear down maintenance including the spares required and it's costing.....and the DEMU was released on just the 1st of April this year....RDSO is meticulous and complete in all it's endeavors ....If they had run the country INDIA would be ahead of other developed countries of the world...

Bio toilets in train, which does not dump human waste on the track had been designed and proven in trials...I had posted about it earlier ...Sadly the implementation is taking longer than expected time, and knowing IR maintenance, there is the grave possibility of the Toilet not getting cleaned at all and the passengers suffering due to this...
Here is a Pic., of a full SS Toilet at testing center...
