Re: An INTRO to Locomotives..Steam /Diesel Electric / Electric.
Excellent stuff psr ji. Being living in Ooty and experienced the Train Ride I am proud to be part of history. Loved it, but still couldn't get my head around in the after topics. But then, there's lot to learn from these forgotten counterparts.
Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
The girl said, 'NO!'
And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.
THE END

Re: An INTRO to Locomotives..Steam /Diesel Electric / Electric.
When some members requested for this thread, I thought it will be for time pass...but the following enthusiasm and many PMs I got proved I was wrong...
One surprising aspect disclosed to me by some members was that their children had asked many in depth questions ,which they were not able to answer...and this thread had solved the knowledge sharing..they would open the thread, make the child sit and go through it, and the child will be happy...
A second problem cropped up...the child would ask more doubts not covered by the thread, and so I would post clarifications to the queries....this is why more than normal amount of images and explanations will be seen in this thread...
So this thread has a following of both grown ups and children, and I am only happy to share here...
Let us look at the improved Hybrid Bogie Frame..

Re: An INTRO to Locomotives..Steam /Diesel Electric / Electric.
We will now look at the UNIQUE engine starting mechanism in WDG5...In all other Locos ,just like in cars we have a DC starter Motor spinning the crank to start the engine....
In WDG5 instead of DC motor, a compressed Air Motor is used for starting the engine.....
Improved Gear Case Sealing....
Forged Connecting Rod with linear grain orientation....

Sir, the amount of detailed information being shared here, has no parallel on any other forum that I have seen so far. The kind of research the Railway guys are putting-in, also comes as a surprise to many of us who are clueless about such a division. Thanks for posting and please keep sharing more information.Originally posted by psr View PostWe will now look at the UNIQUE engine starting mechanism in WDG5...In all other Locos ,just like in cars we have a DC starter Motor spinning the crank to start the engine....

What I am sharing here is a portion of the core activity of achievements by the RDSO of IR.....I am an avid follower of them for many years, and still many times I am shocked and thrilled to see their innovations....there is no Parallel to these great engineers, who are never known outside....It is for this reason, that I do post the many achievements of RDSO in this thread, so that who ever reads it will know their greatness...Originally posted by srikany View PostSir, the amount of detailed information being shared here, has no parallel on any other forum that I have seen so far. Here is a picture of the latest Diesel Electric Loco designated WDM2G...It has 3 nos of fuel and energy efficient Cummins Diesel of 800 HP each , and is a mixed traffic Loco...This is one of the experimental Loco to come out into service ....

psr ji, are you it is just 2400 HP? Most WDM-2s today have been rebuilt for 3300 HP...and we have much more powerful WDM-3Ds - so where exactly will the 2G fit?Originally posted by psr View PostWhat I am sharing here is a portion of the core activity of achievements by the RDSO of IR.....I am an avid follower of them for many years, and still many times I am shocked and thrilled to see their innovations....there is no Parallel to these great engineers, who are never known outside....It is for this reason, that I do post the many achievements of RDSO in this thread, so that who ever reads it will know their greatness...

OT: Are you on IRFCA as well?Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

Re: An INTRO to Locomotives..Steam /Diesel Electric / Electric.
I am not on IRFCA, though I am an avid follower ...
The WDM2G is an Experimental mixed traffic Loco..It has 3 nos of 800 HP Cummins Diesel inside...what exactly the future plans are, is unknown , except that it is a highly efficient and environment friendly Loco.....the pollution or injector pressure, or efficiency of the Loco is unknown. IR had started using the Cummins diesel engine extensively in DEMU, and may be they are trying to experiment with development of higher HP Locos with them...Nothing is known as of now...
We have the Two Stroke WDP 4 and WDG 4 series Locos using GM EMD engines which are at the moment the most efficient engines, and the 5,500 HP WDG 5 series are already on extensive real time operational test ,and soon to be put into Service..When Was The Last Time,You Did Something For The First Time.

Re: An INTRO to Locomotives..Steam /Diesel Electric / Electric.
Thanks for clarifying that...so probably it's nothing more than a prototype as of now and the actual production model may be powerful enough for mainline duties. Loved the looks thoughOriginally posted by psr View PostI am not on IRFCA, though I am an avid follower ...

Do we have any WDG5s in SR/SWR?Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

Re: An INTRO to Locomotives..Steam /Diesel Electric / Electric.
Right now the WDG 5s are undergoing rigorous real time testing on all aspects. Initially it did not pass the Crash test due to it's front hood being flat, subjecting the Loco Pilot to immediate exposure to crash injuries...now they have reshaped it to more like the WDP 4 series, thus giving space in front, and had rearranged the Pilot's cubicle with more Safety . There is a plan to include a Pilot Alive safety device, by which the Loco Pilot is expected to operate any control function every 60 seconds, or a Separate Button is provided ,which the Pilot had to tap on every 60 Seconds to keep the Loco going. If this is not done , first the drive power will be cut, and if no inputs come in the next 60 seconds, the brakes will be applied and the Loco will be brought to a stop.Originally posted by bbsrailfan View PostThanks for clarifying that...so probably it's nothing more than a prototype as of now and the actual production model may be powerful enough for mainline duties. We can expect it in service any time now, and mostly will be used for Heavy duty Ore or Coal wagon pulling.
