With the super conductor levitation ,which is the future form of high speed transportation, we come to the end of this session on the Introduction to the forms of Locomotives from the Humble Steam Locomotives to the Super conductor Levitation.
A BIG THANKS TO THE MODERATORS for allowing sharing of knowledge on Locomotives, and also to the MEMBERS who had been encouraging throughout...
Doubts and queries are welcome....

Not in Prime Motive power Generation or Drive, but in sub assemblies like wiper motor, Fan motors, etc. It had been found that having control over the Stator or Rotor Magnetic excitation gives better and precise control over resultant effect WITHOUT much loss in energy.. Which is why now the Generation in Locomotive supply and drive Motors in Locos have both Rotor and stator Pulse Width Modulated Control, to save on both Generation and drive losses.Originally posted by dpak89 View PostSir are the Permanent magnets(neodymium type) used anywhere in commercial transportation too?
Or they are just used for illustrative purposes?
Otherwise using Permanent magnet is the older, cheaper way to manufacture generator or drive motor of lesser power.Last edited by psr; 07-11-2012, 03:25 PM.When Was The Last Time,You Did Something For The First Time.

OK. Thank you!
P.S: I have done some projects using Neodymium magnets and found them too strong to handle!
Experienced some incidents where they caused minor injuries too! Using this info i may give a shot at trying some experiments just for fun/thrill atleast

Because of the Constant higher Magnetic pull one must be careful while handling Permanent Magnets..but this depends on size as smaller ones of 1 inch or less are not that dangerous( if you don't swallow)..Originally posted by dpak89 View PostOK. Thank you!

The Voltage generator in most of our two wheelers are with high power magnets in the Rotor and a Stator consisting of many poles of laminated iron ,wound with insulated copper wire,to develop the required energy when the alternate North and South poles of Rotor magnetism cuts across their core.
The 4 wheeler generator on the other hand has an excited Armature which then becomes magnetic to induce voltage in the Outer stator.
While in a 2 wheeler the generated voltage is rectified and then regulated, in car Alternators, the rotor's magnetic excitation is governed by regulating the Voltage and current fed into it's winding, continuously.
Some of The Liter class SBKs comes with similar Alternators. When Was The Last Time,You Did Something For The First Time.

^^
So they don't load the engine when there is no electrical load on the alternator whereas permanent magnet alternator such as in lower cc bikes lugs the engine irrespective of the electrical load,Right ?
EDIT:
Can you please start a new thread on motorbikes so that we can share knowledge ?Last edited by shoeb2015; 07-11-2012, 07:19 PM.

Instead of popping in to answer specific questions could you please start a thread similar to this explaining our bike engine parts. I am closely watching fiero thread for the same reason.site:xbhp.com keyword -> Google this to dig up stuff in xbhp faster

Yes you are right , without the rotor excitation there will be no load on the engine...Originally posted by shoeb2015 View Post^^

I was of the opinion that most here are with adequate knowledge, in Motorbikes...is there any specific areas,or aspect that needs clarification...If sufficient interest is there may be I can collect all the pertinent data and make a try....Originally posted by kantu View Post+1

Wonderful Sir for the detailed thread on the locomotives. Today I happened to watch a program on Extreme Trains in History TV. It was nice to relate even a little read was done to this thread. They talked about dynamic braking, Horseshoe railroad in CA, US were amazing. They even showed a clip on changing brake shoe/pad for a Steamer, wow! The curved metal pad is just made to site on the brake pad holder and there were no nut/bolt, just insert into the groove and it sits just fine. The life expectancy is about 10,000 miles from the brake pads.RX100 1996 | Karizma 2004 | Karizma-R 2011 | RXZ 1999 | RX 135 1998 | RX 100 1993 | CBF150 2005 - 2011

Thanks for your kind words of appreciation..In one of the Extreme train episode, they show a Train wagon's Set of Wheel change in just 10 minutes..it is done on a rolling stock in real time..The technology used wasn't anything high tech, but the application of technology was really a Revelation .Originally posted by SriramEfunds View PostWonderful Sir for the detailed thread on the locomotives. Now the Locomotives come fitted with Disc Brakes, and slowly the wagons are also being fitted with one.Soon expect a day when the old shoe type brakes will be gone ,to be replaced by Disc brakes...Last edited by psr; 07-12-2012, 12:34 AM.When Was The Last Time,You Did Something For The First Time.

Sir, I read the MagLev part and I want to ask that with such high magnetic field strength aren't the passenger's metallic valuables suppossed to be attracted by the train or the track?
Suppose, I'm traveling with a simple iron nail in my hand...wouldn't it tend to be attracted by the track/train?

Yes of course there will be reaction to the induced magnetism ,since it is of a very high order.. In all MagLev trains, special magnetic Shield plates are fixed in place ,so that even a person with a Pace maker can travel without problem....The Japanese have already started using on experimental basis Super Conductor Mag Lev by using Liquid Helium to create -263 C for the superconductors....they have test run a Mag Lev at 500 Kmph with 480 passengers...the days are not far before these trains run normally at regular interval between stations...Originally posted by sunny_ View PostSir, I read the MagLev part and I want to ask that with such high magnetic field strength aren't the passenger's metallic valuables suppossed to be attracted by the train or the track?

Here is a link to the Japanese expertise in making the fastest RELIABLE trains..read esp their MagLev Vehicle which runs on wheels till 169Kmph and then switches to MagLev to achieve 500 Kmph in about a minute.....
