Re: An INTRO to Locomotives..Steam /Diesel Electric / Electric.
Finally! Great initiative. This facility can even be extended to the electric locos like WAP5 and WAP7 as their engine compartments are quite spacious and they can certainly create a similar provision. WAP4s will be a challenge though, due to the tightly packed engine compartment.Originally posted by psr View PostBiking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. Re: An INTRO to Locomotives..Steam /Diesel Electric / Electric.
This had come about after a lot of complaint from Loco Pilots. In fact the requirement was to include a Western Closet, and there is space for same ....When RDSO designed the IGBT TCC the area occupied by the older Thyrister design along with the huge blowers etc., were all removed giving a lot of space...so Hotel load generators and Dual cab design was accomplished....
Sadly the Loo is only engineered into the GM EMDs and all old ALCO Locos have no space for it...and we have 5,100 of them...

With the above post some of the design development of the Newly designed Diesel Electric Locos carrying ID WDG5 with installed capacity of 5,500 HP comes to an end....questions and clarifications are Welcome. When Was The Last Time,You Did Something For The First Time.

I wish and I pray that this sort of RND is happening in the Defence sector as well, I would wish to see a day when we can proudly say everything ( used by the Armed forces) is "Made in India"Originally posted by psr View PostWith the above post some of the design development of the Newly designed Diesel Electric Locos carrying ID WDG5 with installed capacity of 5,500 HP comes to an end....questions and clarifications are Welcome.

There are many good engineers in Defense sector too, unfortunately they don't get a free hand to do what is desired. Many of the budding Engineers with Potential have migrated to the US of A , and now US had become fore runner in defense tech..The possibility to be gainfully employed in Defense sector ,India with adequate funds for R & D is very less..Fortunately the Indian Railways had been blessed with moderate funds , since Financial outlay is less and can be supported within the Budget .Originally posted by srikany View PostI wish and I pray that this sort of RND is happening in the Defence sector as well, I would wish to see a day when we can proudly say everything ( used by the Armed forces) is "Made in India"When Was The Last Time,You Did Something For The First Time.

Saw this article: Will future motorcycles modulate drive torque like diesel electric locomotives ?
Source: Can Motorcycles Modulate Drive Torque Like Diesel-Electric Locomotives? There are solid similarities between a locomotive starting a 5,000-ton train and a motorcycle getting a maximum drive off a turn. In both cases, success depends upon making the most of very limited traction.

Possible if the The IC engine is used to generate power and wheels are driven through Electric Traction Motors...already experiments in Four wheeler segment is going on with good results....Only time will tell .Originally posted by nadz11.ns View PostSaw this article: Will future motorcycles modulate drive torque like diesel electric locomotives ?

Re: An INTRO to Locomotives..Steam /Diesel Electric / Electric.
Even if they 'somehow' manage to use this process, i.e first to convert energy from the engine to generate electric energy and then using this electrical energy to power wheels in four wheelers, it would be very difficult to utilize the in two-wheelers due to limited area/small machines.Originally posted by psr View PostPossible if the The IC engine is used to generate power and wheels are driven through Electric Traction Motors...already experiments in Four wheeler segment is going on with good results....Only time will tell .
I had given my seminar on CVT last year, would add that knowledge to this thread. Hopefully in a presentable manner.

Actually it is simple....The crankshaft will be attached to a 3 Phase generator whose output will be Rectified and Regulated to DC and used to drive a Squirrel Cage motor in the wheel through 3 Phase IGBT drivers...By concept it is the simple way....If this is explored then Diesel engines will find a way into the Bike area, since they have better torque and costs less to fuel and ride.Simple 2 stroke twin cylinder diesel will do the job....Originally posted by nadz11.ns View PostEven if they 'somehow' manage to use this process, i.e first to convert energy from the engine to generate electric energy and then using this electrical energy to power wheels in four wheelers, it would be very difficult to utilize the in two-wheelers due to limited area/small machines.

I still wonder why TWO stroke Diesels are not used in Cars at least ,...since technology can guarantee less pollution with more power with 2stroke Diesels. When Was The Last Time,You Did Something For The First Time.

Sir, you make it sound too easyOriginally posted by psr View PostActually it is simple....The crankshaft will be attached to a 3 Phase generator whose output will be Rectified and Regulated to DC and used to drive a Squirrel Cage motor in the wheel through 3 Phase IGBT drivers...By concept it is the simple way....If this is explored then Diesel engines will find a way into the Bike area, since they have better torque and costs less to fuel and ride.Simple 2 stroke twin cylinder diesel will do the job....

One thing sir, how will it produce less pollution. ? Power is no doubt more produced in two-strokes, but they at the same time produce more pollution. This is the case with gasoline engines. I don't know much about 2-stroke diesel engines. Never studied them.

The 2 Stroke diesel engine in the GM EMD WDP4 Locos produce less Pollution than the 4 stroke Alco ones. ...and a 2 stroke diesel has more power delivery due to a power stroke every alternate stroke......These engines are injected with Microprocessor controlled system ....When one of this engine starts, there is hardly any smoke, and only badly maintained engines, or engines driven to max RPM at start itself will smoke a little initially....Here is a good link on how the Diesel 2 stroke is ideally suited as a prime power with least pollution...Originally posted by nadz11.ns View PostSir, you make it sound too easy

Thanks for the link sir. Very simple language has been used in it.Originally posted by psr View PostThe 2 Stroke diesel engine in the GM EMD WDP4 Locos produce less Pollution than the 4 stroke Alco ones. ...and a 2 stroke diesel has more power delivery due to a power stroke every alternate stroke......These engines are injected with Microprocessor controlled system ....When one of this engine starts, there is hardly any smoke, and only badly maintained engines, or engines driven to max RPM at start itself will smoke a little initially....Here is a good link on how the Diesel 2 stroke is ideally suited as a prime power with least pollution...

In this way, very less fuel would be used to produce the same amount of power and at the same time, with very less(minimal) pollution.
Sir, you rightly pointed why the companies are not using this in smaller vehicles. Maybe for their own economic gain.
Ride safe and have fun.

Here is a real time Video of the WDP4 2 stroke disel engine starting....No smoke at all..
