    • Just one word...Fabulous Pictures, and most of my favorites are there...esp the WDM1 and "Crocodile"...the steam locos are mostly India specific variations and great to see them.

I envy you for the chance you have to see these wonderful machines...good to see that your family also enjoy the time with the Locos...In certain photos you have relived your younger days.....Saw your pictures many times ....

Thanks for posting these Pictures, ...... suddenly the day is filled with Joy...

PSR sir... it was just a pleasure to share these pics with you. I would have spent more time there capturing more details but had to cut short. Some XBHPians visited there on same day with their DSLRs. Hope they will be sharing those pics soon.

Well, I am just that kind of guy. If am happy, it will show & I like to show I thoroughly enjoying knowing & spending time amidst heavy machineries. Wifey complains that I saw too much of NGC & Disc :P Machines, Ships, Aircraft, Railways, War machines, Guns etc ,I may have seen all the programs

And, it would have been abosolutely brilliant if a person like you would have been there on this trip so that I could gain some knowledge of these massive machines.

In one pic, you saw a Tram from Patiala being washed. Well, the Chairman of the RB was visiting the NRM on Monday & it was being overhauled for a run.

I guess we both have minds more inclined towards mechanical things......
There is a saying that " A picture is worth a thousand words".....You had actually been in the midst of these great machines, and could touch and feel them.....
You would have learned more from it than 100 pages of my writing about it.....

            @psr
Sir, was the WDM1 hydraulic coupling driven? According to IRFCA page there were 100 of these supplied to India. Where are the rest?(Please don't tell me they are rotting somewhere!)
            What's the black loco? WAM1?

No the WDM 1 is a DC-DC Locomotive ..ie., DC generation and DC traction....
The First lot of WDM 3 with Daimler Benz engine , and later lot with Mayback engines were with Hydraulic coupling drive...mostly SURI ( INDIAN) Transmission
Sadly the 17000 is the only recorded live WDM 1...
The Loco behind the WDM 1 is a earlier model WDM 2....the separate Picture..
Pict 2 is the " CROCODILE " ID is WCG-1. made in 1925....
              .Description FROM IRFCA.....

Rod-driven C+C electric locos supplied to the GIPR in 1928 for use on the Bombay-Poona section for heavy freights. Originally classed EF/1. The first few were made by the Swiss Locomotive Works, Winterthur, and more by the Vulcan Foundry (with electricals from Metropolitan Vickers. They had four 650 hp motors (total power often quoted as 2610hp), driving two three-axle bogies through connecting rods.
They also featured regenerative braking (Newport-Shildon, UK). They were known for their superior tractive characteristics on the ghat sections; however, the exposed link mechanisms had to be oiled very frequently in all kinds of weather.
They were later used as bankers on the Karjat-Lonavla section, and they were in operation as shunting locos and station pilots until fairly recently (1992) at BBVT. Today [1/00] the (2? or more?) remaining ones are at the Wadi Bunder loco trip shed. The first one was named "Sir Leslie Wilson".

P.M. The Engine Has been inducted on 23rd March......The Engine looks immaculate and the Pilots were neatly dressed...This Loco was bringing in a Alco WDM 3A to the station siding, leaving it , then going around to the other side of Platform, Picking up the WDM 3A from the Short end, taking it out to station outer, leaving it, and again repeating the maneuver. It looks like the Loco Pilots were getting training on coupling, disconnection and safety related Excersises...I spoke to one of the Pilot on details about the Loco ,but he was unable to say anything, and looked like a nubee..I got on the Loco floor and took a look inside, and I must say the display is very clear and Sharp, and stunning...The Pilots weren't using the A.C....The Loud Air Horns are slightly Low Pitched, and Piercing compared to the higher Pitched one of the GM WDP 4...The Twin Headlights were also very bright....Spent some time talking with the Loco Pilot on the engine......
At 10 P.M saw the Pandian Express from Madurai coming in to Dindigul station pulled by another New Good Looking WDP 4 B......Guess Southern Railway is going to have more of the GE Two Stroke Diesel engines....
